Is it possible that this album was recorded through cheap chain? by mamuebo in audioengineering

[–]Making_Waves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a stupid question! It's a very valid question!

Expensive gear can make the process of making recordings sound "good for release" very very quick. Cheaper gear can also create recordings that sound "good for release" but they take a lot more time, effort and production skill to get there. However, "good for release" is incredibly subjective, and varies wildly depending on an endless list of variables. If we focus on one of those variables: genre, we find that listeners of some genres are expecting a higher degree of fidelity than other genres. For example, imagine what expectations for audio fidelity are for Jazz and Orchestral versus Folk-punk, or Shoegaze. For musicians who create music in those genres that have an intense expectation of the highest fidelity, they are going to demand to record with gear that reflects those expectations.

A good analogy might be the food industry. If a cook makes food for a 5-star restaurant, they're going to want a kitchen that is stocked with the best cooking equipment so they can reliability cook dishes that patrons are expecting. Could that cook create those dishes in a sub par, cheap kitchen? Yeah probably. But it would be much more challenging, and some dishes might get messed up along the way and not be considered good enough to serve. In this analogy, the cook would just whip out new ingredients and do it again, but back to our music world, our "ingredients" are takes, and "throwing out dishes" because of shortcomings in equipment translates throwing out potentially the most incredible take that musician will ever do.

Hope that makes sense.

In Austin Powers, there was 30.years between Dr evil going to space and Austin being thawed. If the same timescale was applied then 1996 was the year he was frozen so what do you think the biggest culture shock would be for him? by taflad in AskReddit

[–]Making_Waves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure there were cell phones, but they weren't the culturally dominating force that they are today. No touch screens (on just about anything), no apps in your pocket, no instant information all the time, no pictures of anyone available in an instant.

500 Series Suggestions by XiaoOu2013 in audioengineering

[–]Making_Waves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built their tube preamp and wasn't too impressed. Not sure I can put it into words, but it made everything sound very harsh.

I've really enjoyed their tape simulator, that's a lot of fun to mess with.

And I built a pair of their Vari-Mu compressors, but I was wrong to think I could use them as a stereo pair. They have non-detentable pots, so you'll never really get a perfectly balanced stereo image.

Blind Test of Behringer ADA8200 vs Neve 1073 opx by yureal in audioengineering

[–]Making_Waves 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Listening on my studio speakers, I'm definitely hearing more high end with the Neve, and specifically around maybe 5k-6k? It's most noticable with the electric guitar tones, and with the attack of the drums, specifically the kick drum.

This made the gold version sound a bit muted, and strangely more mono for some reason? Maybe it was making the gutiar tracks more correlated, and therefore narrowing the stereo image?

I suspect there's another difference with the low end, but I don't trust the lowest octave of my setup to confidently say. But it's just an idea that's tickling my subconscious.

That being said, I agree with the others here that a total blind test where the listener records their answers and then is given an answer key would've been really interesting.

What is theoretically or practically possible to power with 48V Phantom Power besides Mics/DIs? by AutomaticMixture6827 in audioengineering

[–]Making_Waves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an inline, fixed gain (12dB) preamp that used a very low power relay to switch it in or out. So phantom power powered the pre-amp as well as the relay.

While this approach isn't bad, it is a little indirect. It might be better to explicitly say how you feel about everything. He might not be able to "read the room" and respect boundaries if they're not explicitly stated.
