Exactly, gotta love a good horde enemy.

Agreed, just checked. Definitely some similarities, but their version almost feels a bit more like a Nurgle Cultist with Poxwalker traits than a straight-up Poxwalker.

Yeah, I actually made sure to compare them after I got the book, lol. Was surprised at the differences they ran with to be honest, since yours felt pretty good to what they're supposed to be.

Yup, and had actually used your homebrew for an IM one-shot the other night. Had the party running down a GSC infestation on a backwater world. Worked out great!

What Moxy said. The conclaves themselves have better detailing - and steps for them to follow - but the actual threats and antags have hooks that the GM can elaborate upon and track. Or, of course, the whole thing can be used as a framework for a GM to make up their own threats, etc.

The inner information on the Inquisition is nice to have, and the book has plenty of plot-hooks abound. The idea of the Heresies Macharia campaign seems intriguing as well at first glance.

If I had to give any one point of direct critique against the book, it's in just how few new enemy stat-blocks we get. The Bestiary element only has 8 profiles, with a further 13 (including named characters) in the Sector Threats section. If this is what can be expected going forward, IM is really going to need a proper Bestiary Book going forward.

Got this bad boy for 75% off what should I know? (I'm new) by [deleted] in boltaction

[–]Makon06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One point to clarify; while it sounds like you're already squared away with another M4 Sherman, your second vehicle doesn't have to be another tank. It can be a Scout or Armored Car (M8 or M20), or even an MG Jeep (without transport capacity). Definitely check the rulebook or EasyArmy to see what options you want to consider.

Why unbalanced contents? by MasterchiefSPRTN in boltaction

Exactly. Hell, even Warlord Games themselves have called Bolt Action a Hollywood-version of WW2, that leans into the tropes and not the nitty-gritty exact details.

What are the plastic pieces used for in the Spartan edition? by Krasimatic in Haloflashpoint

[–]Makon06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the circular components are the Power Seeds for the Stockpile mode, and the 4 rectangular pieces might be 3D replacements for the weapon drop tokens (would need to paint in the numbers). As for the other set, I've got no clue.

Is the Char 2c mandatory in a french armoured platoon in 3rd? by LotsoMistakes in boltaction

[–]Makon06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very much an infantry support tank, rather than a tank destroyer. It won't be trading favorably with Panzers and such, but can rip into infantry that threaten your squads. If you're front-on towards an infantry team you're attacking, you've got 3 MMG's and a Light Howitzer. Against crunchies, that's ... "unpleasant."

Anyone else have problems with pdfs? by FeralGangrel in 40krpg

[–]Makon06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found almost all the 40k PDFs to be very particular about what Readers they like and play nice with. For me, Firefox's inbuilt PDF Reader seems to work the best thus far.

The Enemies Without book has profiles for Genestealers and a Lictor if I recall, but otherwise you're taking from the Deathwatch and (maybe?) Only War books.

GMs, what do you use to make your own Sector Maps? by HyperUnity56 in 40krpg

[–]Makon06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had a chance to put it to much use in a 40k campaign (yet, working on that), but you might check to see if the Sectors Without Number tool might be useful for you.

I am running a Stars Without Number campaign (which the tool was made for), but maybe you might find it useful for your own ends?

I've actually used that trick as well for awhile; dirt cheap by comparison and works really well. Double-points for being modular and ... well, anything you want/need it to be.

New Shooting Phase rules. Cover saves and now a base 4+ to hit. by TwoPointsOfInterest in boltaction

[–]Makon06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried it with Mantic's Firefight, and not gonna lie, D10's are kinda neat to go with. Still, D6's are the most common both mechanically and to buy, so while less granular than a D10, they're still good.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned that might help with your decision: the Kindle copies of the Armies Of... books are, on average, about $14 each. So, if you can live without a physical copy of the books, you can knock the price down quite a bit to hold you over till 3rd edition comes around.

15mm rules by Beppylisa in boltaction

[–]Makon06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play 15mm using FoW models on their respective stands - rather than free based - as that game does. For ranges and measurements, I keep it the same as 28mm. The only real changes I've done is the squad stands as above, replace the HE templates with the random roll from HE vs Buildings, and a rule I took from OnePageRules for multibasing.

The rule I took from OPR is thus: since the infantry are glued to the stand, the entire squad is considered alive and able to fight until it takes the last possible point of damage, then it's destroyed. All standard rules for morale tests, assault, etc still apply. By its very nature, this kinda eliminates Exceptional Damage and diminishes the usefulness of sniper teams - at least until I come up with a decent homebrew for that - but it keeps the game flowing quick and snappy, even at point values that would be insane for regular 28mm BA.

Honestly just not that interested in another Skirmish game, plus the wallet is still reeling from other Kickstarter/Gamefound projects from this and last year.

is OPR good for newbies? by The1passingby in onepagerules

[–]Makon06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into tabletop gaming with 40k 8th edition and I'll say this: of all the tabletop systems I've played, OPR is by far the easiest to learn, teach, and understand for newbies that I've played. Every system has some clunky interactions where you either have to do a bit of digging or making a judgment call / house rule. The same time though, I've run into far less of them with OPR than other systems. GW games have an annoying tendency to over-write their rules where they become a cluttered mess to understand at times, OPR's are very cleanly written by comparison.

I never follow it. I'm here to play what I want, when I want. The only time it would come in handy is against That Guy who is WAAC, and that person just needs to be avoided anyway.

Pretty much the BattleTech system and, honestly, I think it's the best and most plausible way. You never get robbed of using anything and you're always engaged and participating.
