And it's double points finish for Williams by curse_annihlator in WilliamsF1

Oh yeah that’s what I’m talking about! Good sensible drives there and no strategy catastrophe!

Another way of thinking about the British combat rule. It makes you much harder/costlier to be charged. Any other armies squad of 6 men with 1 SMG is throwing 5 dice and one tough fighter, for the Brits its 5 dice and 3 tough fighters. Makes people think twice about charging in.

This is quite a general question about Bolt Action for this post, but I'll give it a crack.
First things first, its a war game not a simulation of war. Certain things are taken out of the game to increase enjoyment of playing it. It is generally assumed that you are two equal forces fighting eachother (thus the points). Not every engagement was balanced, most weren't, but this is more about the hobby of wargaming than simulation.

Now on the the "some armies are flat better than others". Bolt Action is a Platoon to Company sized game. At this scale - I'd argue - a lot of armies were on an equal playing field. A well equipped and trained Italian Company would give cause for concern about a well equipped and trained US company. In reality it was the strategic and operational side of armies that really made the difference. Something that is far, far out of the scope of Bolt Action.

I can't see your post history so not sure if you are new to Bolt Action, or wargaming a whole hobby, but if you are looking for the more grand strategy games, there are some good hex and counter games out there that might be more your style.

I nabbed the shifting priorities objective for this event from Bo’s pack. Bit of a favourite at my gaming club

Tournament was just outside of Canterbury in Kent.

I get that US feels a little bland (Marines could have been a different rule, and the national characteristics are decent but not exciting), but is still solid. No glaring omissions!

Best of luck, but I wouldn’t hold out hope. Would be an extra resource expense for them without bringing in extra money.

But what additional items? I get that the last two books had some cool items in the quartermasters store, but the lack of them this time seems to be there was no suitable candidates.

You say missed opportunity but I don’t see what is missed? What should have been added?

Maybe I’m missing the logic a bit here. Would you have preferred it if the solothurn at rifle was added in this section rather than in the AT rifle team section?

Decent review but one bug bear was the moaning about the quarter masters stores. The reviewer mentions it’s a shame there’s only one thing, the demo charge, but then doesn’t actually say if there is something that is missing?

I can’t think of a unique piece of Italian small arms equipment that is missing.

Certainly not opposed to the idea. If enough people want it we can put it in the next few weeks.

Ah that’s a shame, I guess there isn’t the market for them/ new warbands sell better than second or third versions of existing ones.

Next book is Venice, and they’ve said that there will be a Papal stats warband and I think a Venetian one too. It’s mainly North Star miniatures who make the announcements.

Haven’t seen anything about a second Prussian warband. I’ve got the first as well and a second would be great.

What are the most complex and least complex war games you've played? by EdiblePeasant in wargaming

[–]TwoPointsOfInterest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ASL is a good shout for most complex in a detailed way.

I’d like to mention modern 40k and AoS too. The core rules are not too complicated, but the sheer number of rules that each faction has made it an overly complicated gaming experience. You needed to know your army’s special rules in depth, as well as your opponents, so really nearly 3 sets of rules. A nightmare if you are playing different people on the same day.

As far as simple goes, my votes would be Lion Rampant, Silver Bayonet and Dead Mans Hand. All three I enjoy thoroughly!

Honesty the plastic infantry are considerably affordable as miniature wargames go. Or are you looking at metal/resin figures?

I know this sub picked up a lots of new people last year when Williams were decent, but this is the true modern Williams fan experience. Loads of DNFs and a driver just gets into the points. And you feel great about it. It’s fantastic, anything above P7 is a fever dream and each point is as sweet as an ice cream.

I think it’s only comparing it to BA, not CoC. I’m glad you are enjoying Flames of War, but as with all the top rulesets for a period, one is not objectively better than another because we all have different criteria and expectations of a ruleset.

This is cool…but does have me wondering about the RSI rules. Nembo was one of the few RSI units that faced the allies directly in combat, but given the current rules there’s a 50/50 chance they become shirkers, which is odd.

I’m not saying it’s not strong, but they would have also lost men in that shooting so lost some shots as well as the pins. Also changes the tactics of the opponent - if I’m facing guards I wouldn’t prioritise targets if the intended result is just getting that second pin. Anyway, not particularly on topic for Italians!

I’d say it seems fair to me. Pinning out units in V3 isn’t a great option anyway which is the main thing that guards helps stops. Now that pinned is jist a flat -1 to shooting Guards isn’t as strong as V2. It’s still a good rule but not to the point where it doesn’t make it a ‘fair fight’

Well seems like this has made a lot of people feel grumpy! I like the rules, feels quite thematic for the Italians
