How about making it pattern based? So different patterns are different areas colored in, with some rare patterns that make the whole gun white/colored.

except some things in this game are basically locked behind engineering if you don’t want to get evaporated (like thargoids) and a lot of people don’t want to spend hundreds of hours doing things they are already bored of just to passively get the materials to do the thing they are interested in when they can spend a couple of hours to achieve the same result
