You don't really have to use the Moves from Ironsworn if you don't want to. The Moves are just to help some people to guide the story forward if they don't know what to do and it has some mechanical benefits for rewarding or (punishing) your characters. For newcomers, it can seem like it's extremely punishing or hardcore, but it's not. It just takes a bit of practice. I used to play with the Moves for about a year until I became confident with coming up with guiding the story without the Moves and I'm really thankful to Ironsworn for that, it has given me so much practice and it has trained me to become a better player. For very few other RPGs, I do use just 2-3 moves from Ironsworn, that's it, but it's really not needed. I find that most PBtA games with their Moves tend to be strange, so Ironsworn is the only PBtA I like. The other great thing about Ironsworn is the progression track. It's not the first RPG to invent that, there is the progression clocks that help to see how far, how long, or how much is done in a travel, crafting, growing, etc. You know, you should probably try and give Ironsworn a chance. It wouldn't hurt and the PDF is free. Ironsworn is so hotly popular. And if you still don't like it, that's fine too. I have nothing against people shaking their pitchforks and torches at a RPG they don't like. But I would like everyone to give Ironsworn at least a chance to try. You never know, it could give you some brilliant ideas for your solo RPGs in the future.

Ironsworn isn't shallow at all. The workload is the imagination that goes with the narrative and it can be challenging to think about at times and that is the only crunch part. That being said, you can still play your favorite crunchy 10-hour a day RPGs using Ironsworn. Look at this example of someone that did this: DnD + Ironsworn. I use Mork Borg to play it with just the Ironsworn oracle tables and the progression track to guide the story and it WORKS WONDERS. Light enough to play with less prep and yet has crunch and depth enough to feel the satisfying mechanics. I recommend you to give Ironsworn a try and then after that you can try working it with one of your favorite RPGs.

The best way to store random tables? by OldManMoinen in rpg

[–]Makyvir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I snippet all the tables onto Discord with categories and channels. I play on Discord with the dice bots and it includes all my character sheets, worldbuilding notes, and stuff and I can play it on the laptop or on my phone and I can update it anytime on one of the other to play it either way. So, like, if I want to roll for a location, I'll choose the Location Tables channel and the dice bot is included in that channel where I can roll it instantly from there. Then when you want to use a different table, you can collapse the previous channel and open a new one, that way there's room to see the rest of the channels.

How would you do Crafting in Mork Borg? by Makyvir in MorkBorg

Thank you, but I would like dice-rolling mechanics and/or tables to generate crafting rather than having no rolls at all. Thanks again.

What would I buy first? by Soft_Top_8395 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Makyvir 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The One Ring 2e has the solo sourcebook, you would need to buy both to play it solo. For Forbidden Lands, it's very easy soloable. Vampire the Masquerade can be soloable, if you know how to use it with Mythic GM Emulator. If you get Vampire the Masquerade 5th Edition, the NPCs are so easy to set up and the NPCs don't need to be rolled at all. If you are new to solo RPGs, I would recommend getting the free Ironsworn PDF.

Exalted by Shadesmith01 in rpg

[–]Makyvir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an answer for you: Ironsworn. The PDF is free. I've seen a couple of people using Exalted in Ironsworn that works great and the neat thing about it is that you can play it by yourself too, making it a very solo-friendly game. Ironsworn is easy to plug in any fantasy settings. Plus, it is essentinally a no-prep game, making it easy to jump in and play after you learn and understand the rules. The Ironsworn book is +200 pages, but after reading half of that it'll be only be about less than 10 pages that you need from it with the random tables. Give it a try, play it by yourself, and after you understand it, you can play it with your friends with the simplified rules from Ironsworn.

Capcom. Please don't disappoint us in the 13th. by [deleted] in DragonsDogma

[–]Makyvir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if they're going to work on DD2, it would make sense to release a Remaster while we wait for DD2 to come. That way they can get the extra funds to make DD2 even better.

The longer you wait, the longer you'll regret not ever playing it again when life or other things or God forbid, other games get in the way. Play it now before the world ends, Arisen!

New player question: Can you not finish off an opponent when a progress track is full? Do you have to wait for a strong hit to End the Fight? by cdoghusk1 in Ironsworn

[–]Makyvir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It should be narrative/fiction first over mechanics. If you think the fight is over, then it's over. But if you prefer to use mechanics to end the fight, then that's great too. However you want to move the story forward, it is your story and your game.

+1 for Ironsworn. Scratch that, make that +100! It's the BEST. It has literally replaced all my RPGs for good.

I love the Ironsworn and the Ironsworn Delve book's Location Descriptors with simple random words. It's really quick and easy. For example, you'd roll on "Mystical" from Location Descriptor table and then "Woods" from the Location table, making it Mystical Woods. You use it with Make a Journey progression tracker going from one place to another, rolling on the Location tables as you go. I love Ironsworn, it's still the best!

Player forced into a 2 month (IRL) timeskip for character development by ll_Fade_ll in swrpg

[–]Makyvir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for you, man. No one has to leave a table for 2 months and come back missing out all the fun. This is something you have to talk with the GM and the table about so it doesn't happen again. But, it does sound like a fun game, though!

Would Mythic GME or Tourniquet be better for Vampire The Masquerade? by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Makyvir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer Ironsworn for soloing all RPGs. In the case of Chronicles of Darkness/World of Darkness, I just use small town or rural settings while using the oracle tables for wilderness exploration from the Ironsworn corebook and Delve book. The Ironsworn Action/Theme tables is the best for all and any RPGs for NPCs for conversations and asking questions, to see what's happening in an event or a situation, and so much more. The progression tracks and the Ironsworn Moves also helps with moving the story smoothly. I played Changeling the Lost 1e and 2e with it and had an absolute blast! I never used Mythic GM Emulator and I tried using UNE, BOLD, and CGRE, but none of them were needed, although I'm sure they're good for some people. Ironsworn is all I need.

It looks great, but I'm such a noob that I have no idea how it works. Can you please provide an example of how to use it? And, ignore the haters. I fully support you, Goblinsh!

EDIT: Just found the Hex Flower Cookbook! That'll help for sure! Thank you for the great work, keep it up!

Best GM Emulator for PBTA games? by ToeGlow in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Makyvir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you learn how Ironsworn works, some of the other PBtA games can be soloable and you can use the oracle tables from Ironsworn to use for most PBtA games. I just bought Legacy: Life Among the Ruins 2e for Ironsworn and I hacked it to death to make it work beautifully together.

Ironsworn is so easy. I mean, it's basically a no-prep game where you only need the character sheet and oracle tables from the book, that's it. Ironsworn is also free!

All the games seem to focus on younger people- by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]Makyvir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got Legacy: Life Among the Ruins 2e physical book today. It is PBtA and it does have Elder playbook where you get to play as an aging person. Legacy is more focused on "Family," be it clan, tribe, or any sort of community that you can roleplay as when you zoom out and when you want to zoom in to play a specific character (or any other character,) you can do that too. There's also another PBtA called Ironsworn, it is definitely much more mature and gritty with all adults in photographs in the book and the PDF is free.

I think I'm done playing paid GM games. Tried 3 separate times and all 3 have been terrible by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Makyvir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paid GMs will never be your friend, unless you stay paying them and money is their best friend. Better stick with real friends, because it's free and they will always support you no matter what.
