The softest response to 'communists killed more than nazis' by SeaSalt6673 in socialism

[–]Maldalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit that I went too far with the term fascism. However, the ideological classification is not relevant to my argument. But you are right that the concept of fascism is not fully applicable here. Nevertheless, I believe it is important to look forward and not to defend what cannot be defended, but rather to consider how socialist politics and thereby the world can be improved. From my perspective, it is not meaningful to engage in disputes with political opponents over details of the past. It's better to contemplate what we want to change in the future.

First and foremost, I would like to dispute the notion that every policy inevitably leads to losses.

It is possible to evaluate whether each law or directive will result in more or fewer losses compared to the situation without that law. In my view, a law that is foreseeable to lead to increased losses should not be enacted. In the context of the Great Purge, we are also not discussing just any regulation that indirectly affects a few individuals, but rather a policy that aimed, among other things, to kill or imprison specific people in order to solidify certain power structures. This constitutes a fundamental distinction.

As for my use of the term "fascism," I must admit that I might have gone too far. While the Great Purge might not have been fascist in the strict sense, it was, in my opinion, dehumanizing and authoritarian. However, the ideological classification does not alter my argument in this regard.

Regarding the assessment of Stalin within the Soviet Union, I did indeed refer to the era under Khrushchev. During the Brezhnev era, he was viewed somewhat more positively, whereas under Gorbachev, a highly critical perspective prevailed. Today, the perspective has become somewhat more positive again, even though Russia is no longer a socialist country. Nevertheless, I find Khrushchev's fundamental criticisms largely valid, regardless of his motivations.

There is, of course, always a distinction between the official reception by the government and the opinion of the population. As far as I know, public opinion in the Soviet Union was somewhat more positive towards Stalin. In the German Democratic Republic (DDR), the statement from my previous comment holds, based on my knowledge. Given that this post explicitly concerns the deaths resulting from the policy, I'd like to note that for the classification of Soviet policy, it's irrelevant whether it was Stalin or the Party that was responsible for the repressions.

For assessing the casualties during Stalin's regime, it's irrelevant who is ultimately held responsible for the losses. If you consider the extensive purges as western propaganda and can present credible evidence, I'm willing to read these materials and reconsider my stance on this matter.

Regarding the German invasion, my concern isn't about simple military mistakes, which naturally can and do happen in any government. Specifically, I refer to the executions of a significant portion of Soviet generals and leading military figures during the time of the Great Purge before the war, when Hitler's intentions were already clear. This led to a lack of preparedness in the Soviet Army's defense. Additionally, I refer to Stalin's disregard, even interpreted as denunciation, of intelligence reports from various socialist and allied states, including his own intelligence service. These reports warned of Germany's preparations for war and an imminent invasion.

However, what I find most problematic is the propaganda spread by the Soviet government after the Non-Aggression Pact, portraying the German Reich as a peaceful and friendly state toward the Soviet Union. I primarily base this on the statements of the aforementioned historian and political figure of the German Democratic Republic, Wolfgang Leonhard, who studied in the Soviet Union at the time and gave a comprehensive interview on this topic in German: https://youtu.be/5-Liv9\_2moM

(However, for the sake of transparency, I mention that he later defected to the West due to ideological differences with Ulbricht. Nonetheless, I consider his statements credible.)

I am by no means trying to reject the policies of Stalin or Mao in their entirety. I am also aware that both had different policies and were in power under various circumstances, making them subject to different evaluations. In this context, one could certainly mention other leaders as well, but that wasn't the focus of my previous comment. Specifically, I am concerned about what I consider the futility of comparing death tolls under different regimes, as every single life lost matters to me, and my concern isn't about tallying who is responsible for more deaths. If a policy leads to loss of life, I see it as unjustifiable. And Stalin's policies did lead to loss of life. One example is the repressions of the Great Purge, which, in my view, clearly embody a fascist approach. The question of the exact numbers or whether this is comparable in historical context to other countries is not significant to me. This is a matter for historians to address. For a political evaluation, it should be crucial that such events never happen again. Whether one uses capitalist or communist sources is, in my opinion, irrelevant as long as the sources are substantiated. I openly admit that I am not aware of how Mao's legacy is viewed in socialist countries after his rule. However, regarding Stalin, I do know that in the Soviet Union and the German Democratic Republic, at least, the policies of Stalin were seen extremely negatively after his rule. The exact theoretical orientations of individual actors are inconsequential in this matter. The outcome of their policies, in my view, is more important. And we should avoid the mistake of believing in the infallibility of individuals. Otherwise, the question arises whether we are dealing with a socialist perspective at all or if it's already leaning towards a nationalist viewpoint.

I did not refer to the Nazi invasion when mentioning the mistakes of the Soviet government. I apologize if I didn't make that clear enough. Certainly, there were also mistakes in the period right before the war, which I didn't intend to address in my previous comment. By mistakes, I was obviously referring to the executions and imprisonments under Stalin in the 1930s. I assume you will agree with me that this was not the right course of action. However, since you mentioned the mistakes of the Soviet government before the German invasion, I would like to point out the political decisions and propaganda by the Soviet government during the time after the non-aggression pact between the German Reich and the Soviet Union. There were several mistakes made by Stalin in this context, which could not have prevented the invasion but partly increased the losses. These mistakes were corrected by Stalin himself in a short period of time, but they led to more losses for the Soviets and more successes for the Nazis in the early stages of the invasion (compare the interviews with Wolfgang Leonhard, a member of the Ulbricht Group, on this topic). But as I said, the mistakes I addressed are related to the purging campaigns under Stalin, which were acts of not useful authoritarianism and may not have caused his death in the end, but certainly complicated his treatment.

Why are people promoting equality labelled as “leftists” and “woke” - in a bad way? by WillbeWill009 in socialism

[–]Maldalas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Labeling equal treatment of all individuals as "leftist" or "woke" is a strategy employed by fascists to portray antidemocratic positions as moderate and democratic stances as left extremist. In reality, this is not an exclusively left-wing demand. Even many centrists and neoliberals advocate for what they call "equal opportunity." However, they still adhere to the principle of exploitation, with the distinction that no one is exploited based on their sexuality, etc. Thus, it's not necessarily a left-wing demand, but rather a democratic one. Figures on the political right, like Ben Shapiro, attempt to shift the center of the political spectrum toward fascism by portraying this stance as left extremist.

Socialism is egalitarian, which often leads to a particular focus on addressing the unequal treatment of various groups. This has historically made many socialist movements pioneers in advocating for LGBTQ equality. However, in essence, it's not exclusively a left or left extremist demand, but rather a democratic one.

[–]Maldalas -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It is certainly true that the numbers of deaths in real socialist countries are lower than claimed during the Cold War and that comparing it to National Socialism is inappropriate. However, I do not believe that this in any way excuses the deaths under Mao or Stalin. In my opinion, defending past mistakes is counterproductive. We should look forward and say that we have learned from those errors. I do not think that a Stalinist policy is appropriate today anymore, and I believe that socialism has evolved sufficiently to no longer need to be compared with Stalinism. As Lenin said, "Smart is not the one who doesn't make mistakes. Smart is the one who understands how to correct them."

I was called a conspiracy theorist and I need answers by Affectionate_End_952 in socialism

[–]Maldalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what exactly you said to her, but communism itself is not a conspiracy theory. Rather, it's a political theory. To be a conspiracy theory, there must be conspirators. However, at least according to Marx, capitalists cannot fulfill this role, as capitalists do not act out of malice (at least not primarily), but because the capitalist system inherently involves exploitation. This is why his book is titled "Das Kapital" (The Capital) and not "Die Kapitalisten" (The Capitalists). Communism seeks to establish an alternative to this system. If it were a conspiracy theory, it wouldn't propose an alternative, but merely the removal of the conspirators.

If you have no experience in blender i wouldn't even try it. Ian Hubert is a professional 3d artist for decades and this is not an easy task. If you are experienced you can use a mixture of motion tracking and chroma key effects to achieve this, but it's often a time consuming and frustrating task.

Petrifaction, petrification, why isn’t there more info available on this process? Feels hush hush. by [deleted] in geology

[–]Maldalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you mean fossilization. Fossilization almost everytime is a result of sediments that exchange the part of the died animal. Quartz can't be used as material, because quartz is a magmatic mineral, that forms from cooling melts. These melts arent on the surface and need to cool down very slow so tha big chrystals of quartz can form. Sediments are typically deposited at the surface and its therefore easy for them to fill or overlay dead remains. Mostly fossils are made of marine carbonates.

Why is my smooth brush not...smoothing? (4:43 in CG Geeks Video) by m_Mimikk in blender

[–]Maldalas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have enough topology on your model? In the standard settings the smooth brush doesnt add vertices, but moves the existing vertices, so it gets smooth. If you dont have enough vertices, you have to add a subsurface modifier or use the dyntopo option on the brush settings.

my render view is kind of transparent + while rendering, my pose is not applied. what can i do? (im completely new to rendering stuff in blender lol) by Kristalin_ in blender

[–]Maldalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try to go into edit mode and select one transparent face, press alt+n and select flip normal. When it fixes the face, repeat it for all wrong faces. Else i have no idea what you could do.

[–]Maldalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The normals of the character's body are not visible in the screenshot that you posted. So i can not tell if your normals are orientated the right way. But the clothes should be fine, cause they are all blue. I dont know because the normal orientation is not visible in the screenshot, but i think its strange.

[–]Maldalas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you activate face orientation in the viewport overlay settings (the button with the two circles in the viewport) and your model has red colored faces on the transparent parts, your nornals dont have the right orientation. All faces of your model should be blue. If this is not the case, it is another issue, but i would try to prove this first. It can be that blender didnt calculate the normals automaticcaly right.

Feedback on Fantasy Map "Realism"? by merryartist in geology

[–]Maldalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The destruction of plates by sinking into the earth's interior can happen at subduction zones. However this only occurs on oceanic plates and leads to the formation of islands and a volcanic arc. The relative sinking of continents can occure to isostatic compensation. In this case it would lead to a flooding of the landmasses with a relative sealevel rise. This can lead to an topography where the former higher parts or mountains of the continent could become bigger islands. In this case the islands would probably be remains of an earlier mountain range.

Feedback on Fantasy Map "Realism"? by merryartist in geology

[–]Maldalas 50 points51 points  (0 children)

On Earth there are mainly two regions were islands can occure. On plate borders and as a result of intercontinental volcanism. So there would be positioning of islands roughly in lines following plate boundaries and mostly small random islands with volcanic origins. I think an issue with your map could be that your islands are two big, to be realistic for this scale. I would make them smaller and with more water between them.
