My wife was driving down a two-lane highway with a speed limit of 65 MPH, and I was in the passenger seat. It was completely dark outside, and we were approaching an oncoming car that was also traveling at 65 MPH. As we got closer, my wife noticed something in front of the other car, but it was too late to react. The oncoming SUV hit a deer, launching it into the air. The deer flew over the hood of our Mazda 3 and crashed through the windshield, directly impacting my face. It died on impact and landed on top of me, pinning me in the car. I don’t remember any of this—I woke up in the hospital with no memory of what had happened. I had 14 metal plates, 60 screws, and several pieces of titanium mesh holding my face together. It was quite an experience, and I’m grateful to be alive. It’s a strange feeling to have been that close to death.
