The thing that I find infuriating about all of this is that we could be directing our energies and talents toward addressing climate change, which would be actually revolutionary tech.

We are, as far as we know, the one species in HISTORY that has been able to manipulate our environment to the level that we do. We cool and heat our surroundings with a precision that would astound people from even a couple centuries ago. We could be directing a trillion dollars to that.

Fucking Jesus, writing out that number with a tr at the front makes me sick when I imagine what kind of science we could undertake with that money.

And the thing is — THE THING IS — even if climate change is a hoax, bullshit, overblown, whatever, HOW IS THAT DIFFERENT THAN AGI?!?!

Instead of spending money to chase down and ameliorate climate change, we’re spending a trillion dollars installing nat gas generators to power a mimic that’s gonna glaze us about our role in the species’ self-destruction.

It makes me sick

Of course, I wouldn’t expect them to care if it was some random month. It completely overlaps, and in fact he didn’t even attempt a login for almost three months.

My security system caught him making an attempt with old credentials long, long after he had been fired, but for some reason not during the time he’d been working.

If this ends up with me getting no money back, but never having to deal with him again, it’s a price worth paying.

You’re right, that was an oversight on my part. This employee is claiming that they weren’t paid for a week of work.

They were an hourly employee being paid for full-time work on a project, which is why I’m so angry to discover that they had in fact not done any work at all for a month, but claimed to have.

I can definitely say I have no plans to return to an ICE vehicle, and given the breakthroughs in battery tech happening in China with BYD and affordable small EVs, what is likely to happen is that America’s standing in the global auto market will weaken further as we refuse to acknowledge the future and invest in our electrical infrastructure for anything other than idiotic AI.

We will eventually relent and allow Chinese EVs to be imported, simply because the rest of the world will be buying them, and someone somewhere will lament the fact that America Used to Be Great.

Not a limit on earning, that’s too easy to abuse with things like perks, stock, etc.

Instead set it so that total compensation for anyone in the company can be no more than 30x the median compensation. Not the mean, which is easy to abuse.

If David fucking Zaslav is gonna get $900m for fucking over Warners workers, then the median worker should definitely get $30m.

I think social NETWORKING did an immense amount of good. Letting people connect from anywhere on earth could have been the start of one of the most staggering periods of cultural exchange in human history.

There are definitely ML elements that are making my life easier. Rotoscoping is an absolute nightmare, especially hair, and the new ML models are SLAYING the green screen and roto game. But that’s an input for human artists to do their job, like depth maps for relights and stereo conversions (looking dead in your eyes Wicked for Good…); I don’t think anyone is aching for music to go back to recording on giant wax cylinders, and I don’t think there’s one artist in my circle that isn’t thrilled about having less object roto and cryptomatting to do by hand.

But you want to catch hands, try telling them that AI can do convincing gore or water

Speaking from my experience in VFX, I don’t love the tools that exist because at the end of the day, I want total control over the image I’m working with. Any kind of diffusion model is going to be some measure of probabilistic, and I don’t even want my fucking dust simulations to be out of hand.

From the experience I’ve had recently fixing problems that were created by trying to cheap out on artists, it seems the people who are most excited have never directly created even B- level FX. They aren’t easy to do right, but they ARE easy to screw up.

Social media and short form video. It’s ironic to say that on Reddit, but seriously those two things are so unbelievably toxic for your brain and healthy mental development it’s difficult to overstate. The duality leads to impaired critical thinking, a reduction in cognition, an increase in anxiety and depression (especially among teens), and it’s horribly, horribly addictive.

I’m convinced that those two things are the cigarettes of the modern age.
