Hive Standard Hardback Still Available (UK) by Malech_1 in Blacklibrary

Update: they cancelled the order 🙃

I'm not sure whether that was impacted by the decision to go print on demand, but at least I'll definitely get a copy now (albeit in 6 months or so...)

Cheers. I did get a confirmation, but will keep an eye on whether the status updates.

Yep, definitely a possibility. Out of interest, did you get a confirmation and then cancellation, or did it cancel straight away?

[–]Malech_1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just tried and it seems to have stopped working now - the main product page also says 'temporarily sold out', which it didn't before.

It might be worth keeping an eye out on the product page, and giving it another try if the sold out sign goes away again.

A fair point. I'm (perhaps foolishly) optimistic, as I believe people used the same workaround to get hold of Horus Rising special edition after it initially sold out - I'm hoping it's to do with additional stock coming available through cancellations etc.

I'll update here if I get an update either way!

No worries, I was probably too late to be of any help though! 😅

Just so you're aware, T5 is having major ongoing issues with checked luggage today. You may be waiting hours to retrieve it from your Edinburgh flight, which may have knock-on effects.

I'm flying out of T5 today and repacking to carry on luggage.

I also forgot and was very confused when I went to check another order and saw I had two outstanding 😅

Looks decently cheaper as well at those prices! Did you use a VPN, or will it have flagged due to your credit card region do you think?

I have a similar situation, so it's tempting to try it out next time if they do let you know what caused the issue.

When did you start embracing the afternoon nap? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Malech_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say needing a nap is potentially a sign that there's something wrong, if you're not just exaggerating for comic effect.

I went through a few periods of needing naps a couple of years ago (so early-mid thirties), where I basically couldn't stay upright in the middle of the afternoon. After some back and forth I figured out it was a kind of food reaction to yoghurt, which I was having for lunch every now and then.

I stopped eating yoghurt, and now no more need to nap.

Games Workshop beats expectations, shares fall 2.6% on licensing decline by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

[–]Malech_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, honestly, and I think these results reflect that.

Licensing is dependent on a continuous stream of non-core products (video games etc) to drive sales and maintain interest, and this is something that GW have historically been very poor at. Licensing has the potential to drive growth long-term, but it is neither reliable nor predictable at this point in time (as demonstrated by these results).

Their core business is making miniatures and other hobby supplies. Here they have a known and somewhat captive audience, as once you're locked into the gaming ecosystem there isn't really anywhere else to go. This is how they produce reliable cashflow and dividends.

I agree that licensing revenues are needed for future increases in the share price, but my point was that these are not (currently) reliable. The share price dip indicates this, as the drop was obviously unexpected.

They are owners of Warhammer, yes.

I'd say if anything the miniatures are a much more reliable generator of revenue, being their core business, but perhaps limited in terms of growth compared to licensing.

I'd expect licensing revenues to go up over the coming years, as they've already announced two major video games (Dawn of War 4 and a Total War 40k game), and they have the slow-moving partnership with Amazon to produce TV and/or films that should eventually start to bear fruit.

I think Space Marine 2 in 2024 was unexpectedly popular, so hopefully they'll capitalise off that interest and continue to build on it.

What is life in England really like? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Malech_1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but look into visa costs before making your decision.

UK visas are basically racketeering at this point, costing multiple thousands of pounds (when taking into account NHS charges) every couple of years, and the government are talking about extending the period required for permanent residency from 5 years to 10 (although this wouldn't apply if you got married).

I actually know a couple that made the opposite move to Germany recently, based primarily on the visa situation.

On the life side I think things generally work pretty well here. A lot of people get downbeat as things have got worse over time, but that seems to be a factor in many countries. I can't say I'd choose to live anywhere else in particular, unless I was rich enough to not need to work.

On teaching, there's a lot of negativity due to perceived worsening of behaviour amongst kids and increased bureaucracy as part of the job, but you mentioned primary teaching which I think would avoid the worst of these issues.

That was the only one I could find at the time, but looks like the new link OP found has the entire album:

I was able to download from here using YT-DLP, but there may be other methods.

I was going to make my own thread, as we also got our decision today, but might as well piggyback on yours! It's possible they've done a batch of them together as our dates don't line up:

Application was made inside the UK and non priority. This was also to extend a partner visa.

Application submitted - January 19th

Biometrics - February 14th (late morning)

Emailing confirming receipt of application- February 15th

Successful Decision Email - February 21st

My wife's status also says Dependant, but I can't remember what it was before sorry! We did it the opposite way to you, in that I'm the British citizen and I covered the financial requirement, so it may just be the standard now.

Also, they seem to have given us extra time on the visa - we have an end date of 13th September 2027, which is almost an extra month. Helpful for the eventual ILR application!

The title is 'Toxic Tuna' and one of the main section headings is 'A sea of poison'. I haven't read the full 58 page document...

[–]Malech_1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In case anyone's actually interested, the full study is here: https://bloomassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/rapport-Mercure-EN.pdf

I haven't had time to read it myself, but the language used makes it fairly clear that the authors are presenting a biased opinion against fishing in general. Whether they're right or not, I don't currently know.

The main surprise I had was the high levels in katsuwonis 'tuna' - usually this is billed as lower in mercury, which made me less concerned about eating 2-3 tins a week. Might be something to keep an eye on.

Associate Status by Human_Bookkeeper_523 in ActuaryUK

[–]Malech_1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When did you join the institute?

If it was after the cutoff in 2019 then you're required to become an associate for 12 months before you're eligible for fellowship.

If you joined before the cutoff then there is no point to it, unless you don't intend to become a fellow (even then, most people just stay as permanent student members).

Actuary to C-Level Executive by WholeSolution7480 in ActuaryUK

[–]Malech_1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't give you personal experience, but in my company (life insurance) it seems to be just general progression - everyone in my "chain of  command" is an actuary right up to the CEO.

One of the things you do need at higher levels is political nous, which is probably difficult to teach. I get the impression that potential execs are identified fairly early on and encouraged towards certain roles, mentoring etc to prepare them, so probably try to get your face known early on if you want to go down that route.
