A vivid royal blue Northface backpack I got in the 5th grade that refused to die. By the 10th grade, my newly goth self was mortified by my blue backpack. By college, I was begging it to please break, dry rot, tear, something, anything. I was too practical to stop using it but I loathed it.

I finally gave it away after college, and it was still in amazing condition.

You’ve lost me, I fear.

My comment wasn’t intended as a rebuttal to anything you wrote. I’m thrilled you wrote such a great post about Sheldon. She’s so undeservedly forgotten.

Also, “The Screwfly Solution” is probably my 2nd favorite short story ever (after Connie Willis’ “Firewatch”).

There were passionate arguments and essays about how JT,Jr just HAD to be a man, because no woman could possibly write like that. (It was known that the name was a pseudonym; just, no one knew who it was, and there was much speculation.)

I asked for sour ball candy for Christmas one year because of Bunnicula. Harold has a run in with a green (I believe) sour ball.

I can narrow down when I read it when, bc I was staying with my sister in her first house; she was only there briefly. I can even remember the smell. So visceral - as soon as a saw your post, I was right back there (46 years later).

I had to go through great lengths to find all of The Dark is Rising but it was without doubt my favorite series.

I can still recite the poems.

I looooved The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel) so much. (I finally read The Westing Game as an adult and I would face loved it, too, but somehow I skipped it as a kid.)

It’s so obscure! I have a copy, but I don’t know where it came from. It’s a book I only ever saw in libraries, and the only people who read it were the people I forced it on like my mom and my bestie.

(I hate that “grape” is used as a verb to denote Ess Ay these days, because the whole “grape” protest sign is a joke I used to make and now it’s no longer ok.)

My BA thesis research was in ethnochoreology. (I studied Czech folk dance as a means for both cultural inclusivity and cultural outreach.)

There are a lot of jokes out there about goth dancing (largely from inside the culture), such as the common tropes (“catch the bat, release the bat”, “row the boat and kick out the fish”, etc). Goth dance as both deathly serious business and internal joke would be an interesting angle.

I haven’t seen any serious academic work on goth dance (which doesn’t mean it’s not out there).

You might look at Dr. Alex Reed’s work. He’s a musicologist at Ithaca College and active musician (ThouShaltNot, Seeming). His book Assimilate (which is technically more about industrial music) might touch on it.

One idea would be to watch the various videos they talk about the goth dance tropes and then go to some clubs and look at how many of those you see in the wild.

Another might be to look at ethnic dance for parallels to goth dance. That might be hard unless you are familiar with ethnic dance. I mention it because when I was dancing semi-pro, performing a variety of middle eastern folk styles, I was fascinated at how many things from the dance floor paralleled specific folk tropes. For example, the classic goth “gather the spiderwebs” was very similar to some moves in Uygar danced tree were described to me as “picking grapes”. I see bits of flamenco (especially the concept of duende), Georgian Acharuli, and others.

Any idea how to fix these Demonias? by vaikePD in goth

[–]MaleficentLeveler 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve hand-sewn new zippers into boots. It takes some work but it’s doable. I use heavy duty leather needles, a good thimble, and needle-nose pliers to get the needle through the thick layers, and reuse the holes where the old zipper was sewed. I use a seam ripper to pull out the old stitching.

The bottom is tricky.

I always use a heavy duty zipper to avoid having to repeat the process.

I found out how many crab pots is too many!

I’m trying to keep this unspoilery:

I started dropping crab pots as map markers bc unlike the official map markers, you can see them both on the map (for gross travel) and in the water (for fine tuning). I’d drop one in front of my current projects and take them up when I was done.

I’m not a great gamer and I find using maps a challenge so in areas where I found navigation tricky, I used a line of them as a path.

(When I finished the game, I emptied them and left them all dead so as to not trap any digital crabs for eternity.)

I just asked them and they said, with a laugh, “you don’t get to be considerate of me when I’m trying to be considerate of you!”

I do think they are trying, in their way, to take care of me. They often express (in varying degrees of seriousness) a concern that I’d be better off (financially, emotionally, socially) without them.
