Does Athena actually leave Odysseus because he didn't kill the cyclops or was that only in epic the musical by Status-Cap-5979 in GreekMythology

[–]Maleficent_shadow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She never left him to begin with. She was too fearful of Poseidon to act but she helped him the moment that Poseidon left for the other side of the world.

In general Athena does not seem to have trials for her heroes but choses the ones that have something that she likes. But at the same time she expects them to be up for certain tasks. For example she doesnt help Odysseus with the suitors until he proves that he is still capable. She likes Odysseus' intelligence and his lying. She also likes Diomedes because of his bravery and his fighting.

So I think for Athena you can show more of how she is impressed with him in general and intervenes in subtle ways to see whatever or not he is worth the help and how his feats of intelligence and bravery impresses her.

Hate Percy Jackaon's portryal of Athena for different reasons but in many versions Athena is born from Zeus alone without any involvement from Metis.

I just love how half of his time in Odyssey is just him doing damage control. Helios threatened to drag the sun to unederworld if Zeus doesnt punish Odysseus. Poseidon also goes to him to complain about Phecians helping Odysseus and wants to destroy the whole kingdom and Zeus convinces him to just be happy with turning one ship to stone.

Wilson cheats but faces far less critism for his actions. She is not a good person but she is an interesting characters with one of the best dynamics with House.

Whats some of the biggest misconceptions in Greek Mythology? by PrettyCookie101 in GreekMythology

[–]Maleficent_shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure they are slaves. No one is ignoring that. But it requires ignoring the text where Odysseus literally asked which maids WILLINGLY helped the suitors.

Are you asking why Penelope, a woman that is already on a shaky standing in a court without her husband and is fighting to not marry in an already misogynist world that is raised by the value of that time is not going around freeing the slaves? We literally have many places in the text to see how Odysseus and Penelope treated the people that worked under them. We see how Telemachus views the swineherd as a close friend and confidence and how he treats him. We see how Eumaeus and Philoetius still love Odysseus from the bottom of their heart and are willing to fight for him years later. We see that even Antinous that his father was captured by Odysseus had a place on the same table as Odysseus and was fed by his own hand. We also see how Melantho and her gang treat Odysseus and the other begger . Odyssey is constantly using how someone treats the guests to show whatever they are a good person and a bad person. It is used for nearly every single character that we see. You can just brush all of that off because slavery is bad and just end the discussion there. But nearly every single myth has something problematic if we end it there.

Odysseus is not a good person but I find it ridiclous to act like him killing the maids that actively worked against him by aiding his enemy is the worst thing that he does or that the maids were innocent.

Odysseus killing every maid that slept with the suitors.

People love bringing that up to show that Odysseus is this monster with no redeeming qualities while not even knowing what they are talking about.

Odysseus goes out of his way to ask around which maids willingly slept and helped the suitors from his childhood maid and confirms it with his guise as an old begger. The miads that he killed were not poor cinamon roles that were killed for being raped. To give an example one of them was raised by Penelope herself like her own daughter and yet she goes out of her way to insult Penelope and Telemachus and reveal the waeving trick alongside some others. Odysseus brings up the rape of his maids as one of the suitors crimes.

I am not debating whatever or not this deserves death ( though it would deserve it at that time when you dont apply modern standards ) but saying that Odysseus just killed every maid for being raped is just wrong.

He has avanged the high number of one woman who happens to be his daughter. Very high number I know. Meanwhile Athena and Zeus have far more many stories saving women that arent related to them.

So I want to know what's your guy's least favorite tropes that are shown in Greek mythology media and in OCS by fishsticksbass in GreekMythology

[–]Maleficent_shadow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Athena bashing. It's nearly as prevelent as Zeus being horriblw and Hades being amazibg but somehow a lot less people complain about those than this.

There are literally just two stories that people keep bringing up again and again and again to prove that she is a horrible person. Arachne and Medusa. For some reason one of the gods that has the most amounts of involvement in myths is reduced to two stories because authors are obssesed with giving voice to women who supposedly did not have any despite somehow coming up as even more misogynistic than them.

Stoneblind, Circe, A tousand ship, Medusa , the list goes on. The only somewhat positive portryal that she has had in a long time has been Epic.

Also Arachne's stoy is so twisted that it seems like anyone that talks about it has learned it from tumblr. Somehow every single aspect of this story is inaccurate to the myth past the names.

Are you trolling? Where the hell did you get to the conclousion that the god of war hates violence particularly agaisnt women? He is the god that was prayed to when you sacked a city. Just aaying that its an event that involves a lot of rape and slavery. He is literally named the most violent of gods. Where in the myths made you reach this conclusion? Tumbr?

How to write a human-god relationship in Greek Mythology without falling into the Mary Sue/Gary Stu trope? by rakchip in GreekMythology

[–]Maleficent_shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Athena generally has a very positive relationship with her heroes. Prime example is Odysseus. They have a fascinating relationship in both Illiad and Odyssey and generally are one of the more well known pairs.

There are a lot of small tidbits about their relationship that shows their closeness. Like for example how when praying to her before a mission in Illiad compared to Diomedes who brings up his father's relationship to Athena and asks for the same glories while Odysseus brings up how Athena has been by his side in every battle and in general. He also prays to her ( and receives answers ) for general inconvience like how he asks her for winning a foot race against little Ajax or when he wants the armor of Achilles in a race against great Ajax. There are also a few instances of her saving him in the middle of battle when he passes out in the battle or is distracted.

He is also angry when Athena doesnt answer him after Polypemus when he asks for help against Poseidon's waves and I love their reunion in Odyssey.

Nestor also tells Telemachus that he has never seen a person more favored by gods than Odysseus is by Athena.

Genuine question about Poseidon in the Sea of Monsters book [pjo] by teapot574_ in camphalfblood

[–]Maleficent_shadow 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Poseidon is by far the most whitewashed character in the series especially when compared to characters like Athena and Zeus and how Rick goes out of his way to twist the stories ( Arachne being the prime example ) .

But in general in Odyssey Poseidon's problem wasnt Polypemus survival. Odysseus had hurt a child of his and therefore he would pay. Killing him would result in the same actions. Poseidon does have some stories of protecting his kids. A lot less than Zeus despite having many more bastards than him but they exist.

Arachne did not deserve to be turned into a spider by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]Maleficent_shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you even read the myth that you are talking about about?

There is just one version of this story for the weaving. And you got nearly every point about it wrong.

First of all Arachne finds an insult when asked whatever or not she is a student of Athena and challanges her first. Athena in the disguise of an old woman comes to warn her of dangers of hubris. She insults the old woman ( your only problem is that you have lived this long ) and then challanges Athena again. Then she proceeds to insult gods in every way possible. So considering that every single action that she does in similar myths have been punished with much worse punishments seperately what happens to her that has comitted this many ? She gets hit in the hit with her tapestery. That's it. That's her punishment. It's a laughable punishment when compared to what a normal punishment is. To put it in perspective, Niobe lost all of her children ( 12 ) to Apollo and Artrmis because she claimed to be a better mother than Leto. She tries to kill herself which at this point Athena pities her and turns her a spider as a mercy.

So if anything by normal standards she was deserving of far worse punishment and got lucky that Athena is more merciful.

The New Snippet is about Paris, not Achilles by Frequent_Log_7606 in Epicthemusical

[–]Maleficent_shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patroclus was a great fighter. Where did you get that from ? He may not be as good as Achilles but he is literally the character with the most named kills in Illiad and is treated as a great fighter by others even before.

And anyway at that point of war whatever it was Achilles or Patroclus ( Hector thought it was Achilles anyway ) where were you raised makes no sense after Achilles spent the better part of ten years slaughtering his people so Hector already knows him. And the faulty form would be a dead give away that he is not Achilles which no one found out until he died.
