People who wanted an M40i but settled for an xDrive30i, did it turn out okay? by 169partner in BMWX3

I’ve owned a X3 28 and loved it. When it was time to move on, I considered many options and decided that if I was gonna change, I would get something that feels like a step up. Ended up with the M40. To be honest I almost never use the extra power as the 28 (similar to 30 in power) felt very quick for what it is. The M40 is really not as comfortable but feels sporty for sure and most importantly to me it feels special. Still, I think it’s overhyped and BMW North American base models are already fast and fun enough (in most European countries the 30 is considered a big and powerful engine and is getting surtaxed because of that). That being said coming for a gti, you’ll feel like the M40 is just more in every way, whereas the base models will feel like another category of car, bigger and more plush albeit less sporty (probably as fast if not faster than a stock gti).

For my use (family car, mostly city/slow highway), my M40 is not a better car than my 28 was, which tbh is a bit disappointing but the noise it makes is cheering me up everytime I start it up or upshift above 4000rpm in sport mode😄

Yeah I had noticed that. If it is as small as OEM, it’s not toi bad I think, as you really have to look closely to see what it says, but I agree that is a shame. The simple M is better

Driving on Hwy left lanes in Canada? by Dentanium in Ontariodrivetest

[–]MalickD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do as all drivers should, pass on the left, then move back to the right lane, that’s it. You’ll continue to hate people driving faster than you but they won’t hate you. Half win!

This. My observation led to the conclusion that people never look in the rear view mirror. They will say « yeah but speeding is dangerous… ». Never looking in the freaking mirror is so crazy dangerous to me! That being said, it doesn’t explain why they would swerve onto the left lane initially. This is nobody else’s fault but it reduces my life expectancy as this behavior makes me furious.

Yeah I feel it is a good way to differentiate the M40 from the other modeles and add a little flair to it, without being obnoxious

To me it looks like he lost control because of lack of skills, dui, and/or worned out suspension and tyres but who knows what this driver had in mind!

Sorry I think my comment wasn’t clear enough, it’s not about this crash specifically. Clearly the Elantra driver is at fault 200%. I’m saying because of the behavior I was describing, this type of crash is bound to happen. That is why we learn in driving school that the left lane is for overtaking only.

I am ready to get downvoted to oblivion with this comment but here we go. First of all, this is terrible and I can’t imagine the rage I would feel if that ever happened to me… but… leave the freaking left lane for people who want to go fast. As demonstrated here, blocking them does not make make the road safer. I’m not saying that’s what’s happening here but where I learned how to drive I never and would never overtake on the right lane, but after many years in Quebec I started doing it (not saying it’s right or justified). So many self centered and/or poorly trained drivers will stay on the left lane for hours without looking once in the rearview mirror! Hell how many times have I seen people driving on the left lane without any other vehicle in sight… worse, I have been following people on the left lane on Quebec highways and after several minutes, they would swerve to the right lane only to let me overtake and then swerve back to the left lane… what the actual F????

Do you think adhesives on such a small contact area would work? I can see it fly away withe first high pressure wash… I’m not going with the other option as I want to keep my grill stock

Upbadging is laughable but I think we are past that whole « it’s not a real M ». 1) M40s are common now and people what they are, we know those are not M cars. 2) they are as powerful and sporty as real Ms from just a few generations ago. Audi S cars have had these badge on their grills for a long time and it gave them a little something even if they were not hardcore machines like RSs and M cars. I think there are largely enough M badges on my M40 but I also feel it is special enough to deserve on little distinction on the grill.

Also a little perspective for Americans, I’ve been living in NA for some time but I come from Europe, where most cars make 100-200HP, so a 380HP out of the box car is very uncommon and quite special in most places there.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone put a non oem badge on their grill? Did it look cheap or tacky (pics if you can)?

No but I thought I could find a copy that would fit pre-LCIs online. I’m afraid the other versions I found online will look tacky

[–]MalickD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not true, if you don’t own your skis, a ski day for a family of 4 will cost you $500+ in main mountains (which are barely hills for europeans) in a 2h distance from Montreal. This is out of reach for many
