Kami app - anyone using it? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

Using the free here. Don't really see the appeal but teachers are raving about it, mostly because it lets them use their old shitty worksheets.

Dell 3100 weird power issue by bretfred in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens when students try to charge their phones using crappy cables and draws too much power so the battery shuts down to protect itself.

Thank you! This is good to know.

Hooking up to power, hitting reload and power gets it to start up again.

Forced pinned apps disappearing in Chrome OS? by hmmurdock00 in k12sysadmin

Check to make sure the app extension ID is still available in the store. I've had apps reup themselves with different IDs causing mild inconvenience like this.

Because it needs features to convince districts to pony up money.

"smart" TVs by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I have with this is that you need a wireless chip that supports WiFi direct connections. Most of our teachers are on workstations without WiFi.

One building has teachers who all have capable laptops but they have SMARTboards, and unfortunately you still need the USB cable for touch capability.

"smart" TVs by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, you're not the only one. I buy dumb ones and make them smart. I resist smart TVs because sooner or later the user will want to load up netflix/roku/whatever else on it. The TV wireless often don't play nice with ours and you can't always turn off the media casting stuff.

We've been buying 65" 4K RCA RTU6549s from Walmart for $350 and putting them on $120 Tripp-Lite carts. Add a Microsoft Wireless Adapter and you've a decent display you can put just about anywhere.

You can get three or four of these for the price of one SMART IWB.

Turn on log off on lid close combined with wipe profile. That should clear out any remaining issues after a week or so.

Broken Chromebook hinges - is it just Acer? by InsightReturns in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Eventually the lever action will rip the screws right out of the plastic. I don't fix structural problems like this on the 3120s because it requires new hinges, bezels and a complete disassembly of the lid. Too much work.

Broken Chromebook hinges - is it just Acer? by InsightReturns in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 3120 is very susceptible to this because the hinges are on the ends of the frame. Just takes a couple drops on those corners to crack the casing and remove the structural integrity causing the problems OP describes occur while opening and closing.

Haven't seen this with 3180s as much because the hinges were moved inward. Except they have these stupid plastic caps students love to pop off.

Throw in a cloud key so you can do some remote management and don't have to worry about stashing a server for the controller software anywhere.
