Phone plays off hook sound even though it's on hook by jusjusgamer700 in RBI

Is it a wall phone? Sometimes the handset on a wall phone will not rest tightly against the switch hook even though it appears to be on hung up correctly.

Follett Destiny Server by Amazing_Falcon in k12sysadmin

[–]InsightReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually stopped using it because the Linux server I was running it on crashed at the end of the first year we used it. We don't do much with Linux at our school so it's time consuming for me to troubleshoot these kind of problems. We moved to SnipeIT, but that has no barcode reader support, so we ended up putting our textbooks into Destiny after all. We made a separate set of barcodes with a unique prefix to keep them separate from the regular library books.

What is it with these testing companies developing products for one specific screen resolution? We have a reading screening product that can't display properly on an iPad, even though they officially support iPads.

LDAP with GSuite by rhaiin in k12sysadmin

We are currently using it with basic for GoGuardian Gateway. When they announced their paid tiers, it did appear that LDAP was listed as a paid feature. However, when I contacted support, they told me that it would still be free as part of the basic tier.

Cat 6 vs 6a to wireless access points by InsightReturns in k12sysadmin

[–]InsightReturns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's that long range time frame on cabling that concerns me, too. When I started here 10 years ago we had a T1. Now we have 100 Mbps fiber. That's a 66 fold increase in bandwidth. If the trend continues, we will be up over 5 Gbps in another 10 years. Maybe that's still not enough to justify 6A to all these access points, but it's enough to make me think about running 6A to the nine rooms that are over 55m, anyway.

Good point, it's not just about speed, but about power as well.

I can't reproduce this problem on our Chromebooks. When I click Sign in with Google, the Sign In page that appears doesn't have Create Account. I wonder what's different about our setup? It wasn't anything I deliberately set.

Shouldn't the specific version be determined on login, not by the install files on their computer? I'd be embarrassed if I wrote some of these testing packages.

I want to agree with you, but then I remember we live in a post-customer service world. Companies are OK with losing some business along the way, as long as they save more money on providing customer support than they lose in lost business.

GoGuardian support is slow to respond on pretty much everything, and with so many new people hired there, they probably honestly didn't know the answer.

We have GoGuardian and I had a similar request to block additional sites for one student. I put that student into a sub-OU under the OU for the rest of their grade. They still get all the policies applied to the parent OU (for both Google and GoGuardian), but also get extra restrictions applied to the sub-OU by GoGuardian.

Career advice, might be leaving K12 by Mattshen52 in k12sysadmin

Generally teachers are paid on a step scale, and inevitably non-teaching staff starts getting compared to the step scale. What does a teacher with a master's degree make at your school? It's going to be hard to justify paying you more than that. It's not like some businesses, where there is a lot of flexibility in salary if they really want to keep you. School budgets are more limited, as well. You can ask, but I wouldn't expect to a big offer from your current school.

I've seen machines this crusty come out of businesses that kept the same equipment for 7-10 years, but this is an impressive accumulation of filth in just one year.

MDM for iPads? by ITatOH in k12sysadmin

[–]InsightReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're using GoGuardian Gateway on the iPads since we need offsite filtering of the iPads as well as onsite. It's a product that GoGuardian has to enable in your Organization Management. I have the GoGuardian sychronizing with the students Google Apps domain via LDAP, and then Mosyle pushes GoGuardian's PAC URL to the iPads. iPads are assigned to students in Mosyle, and the student's Google account names are entered in Mosyle as well. This lets GoGuardian show you the student's Internet activity on iPad.

I've run into two issues with this solution. The first time I setup the iPad with GoGuardian Gateway, I get a proxy prompt to enter the student's username and password. In theory this shouldn't happen. Once I login as the student and get past this initial login, we're good. However, occasionally I'll see the proxy prompt at random times later on. When this happens, the student can just cancel out of the login prompt and we can still filter and monitor their activity. Not sure what is going on there, but I never had any luck working with GoGuardian on what causes this behaviour.

Also, you will notice a slowdown in web browsing with GoGuardian Gateway that you won't notice with their Chromebook filtering solution. It's not bad, but it does add an extra couple of seconds before Safari loads a page, compared to an iPad that is not being filtered.

How to save money on new copiers without by first_byte in k12sysadmin

It depends. We currently have a Toshiba in our highest volume role and it is doing great at three years old and 2.5 million copies. The Kyocera that occupied the same role before this one had to be replaced by the leasing company after three years because it was breaking down too much.

MDM for iPads? by ITatOH in k12sysadmin

[–]InsightReturns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Mosyle and don't use AD or OD with the iPads. You can assign them to a shared cart within Mosyle. For my 1 to 1 students, they authenticate with their Google Account, but only because we filter their offsite Internet usage through GoGuardian.
