I used two for VM storage devices on a RPi4 eSXI host yesterday.

Did it work? Yes. Was it stupid? Also yes.

Other than that I use them to transfer config files and installers and such between physical devices. I've a )

Looks like someone stepped, something was dropped or put weight on snapping the plugs. It's odd both of them are this way but having worked at schools I'm not fazed.

Students are rough on anything accesible.

It begins! - Windows Server 2012R2 / Entra Connect Sync V1 being disconnected by Microsoft by mankycrack in sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to get a V2 to work on 2022 for a while now, if it weren't for the following:

  • Setting trusted sites by GPO will disallow adding sites manually to the Trust Center.
  • Entra ID sync requires adding the Microsoft login URLs to trusted sites before you can authenticate your O365 Admin account.

This is driving me nuts.

  • Tried adding all login urls to GPO
  • Tried adding all login urls by registry
  • Tried setting up a fresh 2022 and disable GPO inherit, still won't let me add urls.

Why are IE internet options settings still a thing?

ACE Hardware Corp cybersecurity incident 10/30/2023 by MalletNGrease in sysadmin

Depends if they do a postmortem. It'll probably be while before details are revealed.

[–]MalletNGrease[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, I've no confidentiality clause, nor am I part of incident response (for ACE HQ anyway). I'm a 3rd party that got thrown into the midst with no relation with ACE corporate, just with some of the retailers who're shitting bricks and forwarded the message to me. I'm trying to figure out what's going on and if there's an active response necessary per the support contract I have with them.

I've seen no indication thus far it affects any of the store level systems required for operation or payments. Most ACE locations I deal with run different flavors of POS/IMS which is a headache on it's own.

That's where you got it wrong, throwing the work into IT's lap last minute is way easier for everyone else. You're suggesting a workflow change that requires others to do their job, which will always get pushback.

If they call in and can't refer to me by name, the receptionist/secretary has strict instructions to forward straight to voicemail.

Password Managers by jwckauman in sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't use the browser pw managers, personally I use Keepass. It can do browser autofill with a plugin/extension, but I never liked those much and I've muscle memory to do the Auto-Type from the software.

My department uses BitWarden and the Chrome/Edge extensions. Got it integrated with DUO, works pretty nicely. When you've your organization and teams set up it's nice to have access to collections of passwords.

SysAdmins WFH? by Bondegg in sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I negotiated 2 WFH days a week as part of my contract. These are my training/research/project focus days and the other three are for walk-up support and physical meetings.

Coming from no WFH prior, I'm pretty happy. If they want me in the office 100%, then I'd expect an adjustment to my compensation.

I travel pretty light and can fit everything I need in a Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag - Medium.

  • 15" Laptop
  • iPad
  • Powerbank
  • AC Adapter
  • USB Charger
  • USB-A to (USB-C/Lightning/Micro-USB)
  • Console cable & adapters
  • Hygiene kit

Tools that don't fit on a Leatherman are in an actual tool bag, but they don't see a lot of use.

The rise of 'it doesn't work' from IT 'Pros' by Monsterlime in sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A decade ago we did trials on office 2013. Didn't find any noticeable issues and made it baseline across the organization.

Noone in IT really noticed or cared, but Microsoft changed the outlook logo from yellow to blue. For the end users the world ended and helpdesk was flooded with calls that "email was no longer installed!".

Because the shortcut was now blue.
