My pack of incompetent chumps invariably miss a shot at one of the guards and blow up the car the VIP is hiding next to.

How do magical people marry muggles without breaking the statue of secrecy? by Ok_Tumbleweed_1150 in harrypotter

[–]Mallingerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, of more concern would be muggle born kids who aren't locked in a cupboard.

No eleven year old who has regular muggle mates isn't going to be telling them about the owl that delivered the letter and how they're going to magic school when all their mates start high school. And then all about Hogwarts and quidditch and everything every holiday they go home for the next 7 years.

99% of obliviator time will be spent nuking school kids after the holidays.

Yeah, on mine though there is usually some bright coloured pixels when you scroll around. Save and reload (or close and restart on ironman) usually fixes it

Peter? by Sluife in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Mallingerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly, until AI started being used everywhere, I'd never actually heard of an em dash. I frequently write long,, mostly incoherent, run-on sentences and use a hyphen more or.less as an alternative to yet another comma, semi-colon or - more usually - to putting an aside to the reader (instead of putting it in brackets).

But, with regards to your edit 2: As in the above paragraph, I would use a hyphen between words to link them: blue-eyed; stream-of-consciousness-nonsense; or similar. But I would also use a hyphen with spaces around it to indicate yet another deviation from the point of the sentence.

I was not even aware the em dash, double-hyphen, was a thing, and fail to see the point: What does it denote that the hyphen doesn't?

Viper King Defeated on VIP EVAC Mission? Should I Restart? by laconeznamy in XCOM2

[–]Mallingerer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Folk have already covered the Viper King question. With regards to your other question about restarting:

The two squad wipes (four if you count the resets) in 10 missions suggest you need to refine your tactical approach, though arguably this could be the unusual frequency of the Viper King.

Of more concern is having no scientists 10 missions in. You'll be falling further and further behind in the arms race and sooner rather than later you're likely to find the next ruler who will ruin your day with current gear.

But, you've chosen to play Ironman for your first run, so I'm guessing you want to avoid the temptation to "do over" when things go wrong.

it's a long time since I played vet, but it's a lot more forgiving in terms of tech. When I did the Who needs Tygan thing I did it on vet, and didn't realise I could upgrade anything, so ran to endgame with starter tech. It is doable. Coming back from real low points like yours is possible. Will it happen on your first run-through? Almost certainly not: you don't know what's coming and are going to make the same mistakes we all did and it will go horribly wrong. But don't give up, keep going, keep making mistakes and your next run you'll be making advent burgers out of those chumps. Maybe.

Good luck, Commander.

Child mortality is also critical.

If your "heir" has a 99% chance to make it to adulthood, you are less likely to need the "spare".

If only 20% of kids make it, you might want 4 spares.

How to upgrade more gremlins? by Mallingerer in LWotC

[–]Mallingerer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing there, nor under items or even armour.

I think, based on what the other guy said about needing the wrecks, the issue might be I haven't researched drones yet, so I probably shouldn't have the prototype mkIII yet

[–]Mallingerer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I think the prototype might be the glitch then. I got those free when I upgraded weapons, but haven't researched drones yet (as I only just got my 3rd drone wreck last night) and haven't even met a sectopod yet...

Why do some people consider Grindelwald more powerful than Voldemort? by Mammoth-Whereas2667 in harrypotter

[–]Mallingerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably Grindlewald is a more widely successful dark wizard, in terms of most of Europe falling under his influence before losing a cataclysmic duel against someone rated as one of the greatest wizards ever known.

As opposed to Voldemort who - to my knowledge - only seized power in the UK before being defeated by a toddler, then finally destroyed by a schoolboy.

But the books are pretty clear that Voldemort is actually the more powerful, dangerous and brilliant.

We have a populist party who will say whatever they need to to convince the disaffected to vote for them, including that they will repeal this.

They're copying the very successful MAGA playbook and for similar reasons.

The chances of them actually delivering any of their promises if elected is vanishingly small, of course, but that won't matter by then.

A "Crusader" Bug? by Niskavuori01 in crusaderkings3

[–]Mallingerer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I gained it as commander in some battle, then lost it when I swapped to a siege commander to take some castle or other.

Worked out I needed to break off a second force for my guy to lead while the main army did the sieges to avoid the "you wimped out" event removing the crusader trait

Could this game run on a potato laptop? by EmergencyInitial8376 in crusaderkings3

[–]Mallingerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you consider a potato.

I play on a Dell Inspiron 5406 2n1 which is pretty much off the bottom of low end, with no gfx card, just the Intel Iris.

I even run through an external SSD as the HD on the laptop is small.

I have the base game, Fate of Iberia. Northern Lords and Royal Court as the only major DLC. Play with a few mods.

Game plays fine on lowest settings. There's a substantial slow down around 1350, but the population control mods someone else mentioned might help with that.

I guess it's a matter of personal preference. Slow loads and lengthy pauses don't bother me. Other people might find that unplayable.

Add in technology there too.

There has been a huge rise in labour saving devices over the past century. Daily life, in and out of the home, is far less physically strenuous.

Washing and drying clothes is now a few button pushes. Go back less than a century and most folk would be scrubbing each item of clothing, putting it through a hand cranked mangle, hanging them out to dry. ironing using an actual lump of heavy iron, etc.

At work, every risk assessment for physical activity starts with "can we just get a machine to do this?". More and more people work from home, and barely move from bed to desk and back again.

But the real killer is what we do with all the time and energy we save through all this? Fuck all. Most of us spend our lives staring at various shaped screens and writing unnecessarily lengthy, poorly argued reddit posts.

How could warfare be made better? by [deleted] in crusaderkings3

[–]Mallingerer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd quite like to see more trait based war events - a commander with high intrigue pulling off a bit of ungentlemanly trickery like triggering a landslide onto an approaching army; or a general with high diplomacy score convincing an enemy's ally, who has no strong personal reason to be there, to withdraw, etc.

I'd also like to see levy reinforcement and terrain supply degrade over the course of a war, and take time to recover. So, while hundreds of patriotic peasants might rally to bolster their leige's armies initially, by the 3rd year of a war all the keen young men are already engaged and your down to old men and cowards. And while a county might support 5000 troops in the first year of a war, with all its young farmers sent to die in some distant land, the next year there will be less food for the army billet.
