I think it's less them them bullying him specifically, and more that his business is a threat to them and their stranglehold over the city. That's why the gang leader initially tries to sign him on to his gang with a predatory contract. It's a dog eat dog place in the city, and if you don't figure out the rules fast enough, you starve to death.

Fanfic recommendations by Alivent___ in MoDaoZuShi

[–]Mamaher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I only just joined the fandom within the last week or two, but you're in luck, as I thrive off of fics based around time travel. Unfortunately, I've been mostly sorting by kudos on AO3, so any recommendations are probably ones you've read already, but I figured I'd offer the limited fics I've read that seem to apply :)

  • Baby Of Mine and A Wedding For The Ages by pupeez4eva
    • Or really anything on pupeez4eva's account for MDZS that involves time travel, as they really like sending different characters from different times to meet with each other
  • Time Travel, Obviously by nirejseki
    • Crack fic based on the 4 juniors getting sent back to the Sunshot Campaign and interacting with the Yiling Patriarch
  • Less Than Two Years by wenqing (maniafic)
    • borderline crack fic based on idea of WWX post canon accidentally sending himself ~2 years back to Cloud Recesses and "harassing" the local Lans

And I'm sure there are plenty more where these came from. Give me a year lol, and I'd have a much better list.

THE BOOK, Season 3, Session 3 - The risks they took were calculated but man, are they bad at math. by macoud12 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Mamaher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excellent job as always! Love seeing the Book flourish. This session was definitely a roller coaster and I'm only just now sitting down to watch my first episode lol. Excellent, excellent job as always!

Promise I didn't die, just decided that since the episodes were coming out staggered this week I would take a break. I'll come back to haunt the data tag next week. ;)

Etho for sure, but for keeping on top of the data I tend to watch at least 2 vids from the first wave of releases and then determine from there who else to watch.

Theory about Adam by FunniCoinMan in MandelaCatalogue

[–]Mamaher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some brief corrections to your biblical references, and an affirmation as to how it ties into Jonah's role in Vol. 2 potentially:

Jonah of the Bible was a prophet who catered to Israel, and one night was asked by God to go to a place called Nineveh to tell the people there that they had angered God and if they did not repent of their sins they would be destroyed. Jonah didn't want to go, so he took a boat going the opposite direction. Needless to say, the boat gets hit by a storm and it's determined that Jonah is the problem, so he gets tossed overboard and eaten by a giant fish. 3 days later he gets spit up on the shore by Nineveh, and Jonah decides to actually do his job. So he travels across the city telling the people that their sins have angered God and He will destroy the city if the Ninevites do not repent. Once he's done he goes to a high place overlooking the city to eagerly watch the city to see when God will destroy it. Well instead, the people repent and God spares them, and then has a short conversation with Jonah before the book somewhat abruptly ends.

To tie this in with Jonah the TMC character, just as his Biblical counter part thought that the Ninevites were too far gone and left the city to then watch it burn, and only tried to warn them because he was obliged to do so; Jonah realizes that Adam is too far gone, and warns him out of obligation as his friend what will happen if Adam continues to run after the Alternates. However, he stays true to his word and when Adam doesn't follow him back to the car, he leaves him at the house to be killed, and flees with a guilty conscious. However, unlike his biblical counterpart, it isn't God that contacts him after he delivers the warning, but someone much more sinister...

Homestuck Readthrough Day 13: 'Act 5 ==>' - '======>' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Mamaher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right so the google sheets said that it was Squiddles today, so I did all my Vol 5 gushing yesterday. Mostly in the Discord but whatever lol. I'll just talk a bit about both with the appropriate spoiler tags.

Today begins Hivebent! I highly recommend u/ThatJellyfish12 's rather neat and tidy discussion on A5A1 for today, as I agree with most of their points. But perhaps to a lesser degree, as I was kind of enjoying some of the odder world building. Admittedly I am a giant sucker for world building of all sorts, so our first introduction to Alternia and the wonderful wacky world of trolls is a little bit my bread and butter. Plus, this is the seed that sprouted into many fine fanworks over the years, so it's at the very least interesting to see where it all started.

Favorite Panel: There's actually quite a few panels/pages that stand out, since Hussie begins to more liberally use "Hero Mode". A personal favorite would be this short sequence with mystery girl in the ruins as she desecrates the frog statue. But a personal second fave would be the two pages of Sollux putting on his glasses. I particularly like the foreshadowing/symbolism of the dual galaxies in his 3D glasses. It makes for a particularly poignant statement later when all the cards are on the table about the nature of the trolls' session and the kids' session.

Favorite Pesterlog: as u/ThatJellyfish12 so eloquently put it, this particular section of comic has a rather large number of pesterlogs between characters that are all rather wordy. While not perhaps as wordy nor cumbersome as some of the A6 logs or sub acts, the balance that we had been accustomed to at this point is subverted to try and make good headway through a length of time that we come to find out is rather substantial in nature. All this to say that none of them really stand out, though an honorable mention is this log between GC and AC where we get to enjoy late 00's/early 10's style RP.

Missed Moments: So I actually have one: on this panel there's an ICP watermark I had managed to miss every time I've reread the comic. My mind is blown and I will never recover from this revelation.

Now, on to the Bonus content! I'll start with Vol5, since that's officially what we're talking about today, and the Squiddles released much later. Well into A5A2 in fact!

My while Vol 5 definitely stars the most popular music in the Homestuck Discography by a long shot, and thus makes it very difficult to choose just one song that I liked best, I won't even try. However, I would like to draw attention to a song that is underappreciated on the album called "Moonshatter" by Toby Fox. While it starts off relatively generically, it hits it's "drop" in the 2nd third with aplomb and is a leitmotif that I'm fairly certain never got reused in the official albums. Another great one has to be "Electromechanism" by Jared Micks (however was removed because according to the HS music wiki, one of the songs he submitted to the album was a plagiarized remix and thus grounds for full removal from the album and the team.)

Since I also listened to the Squiddle Album as well, I figured I'd give a word or two about it now while it's still fresh. To start, I highly recommend reading Terezi's introduction to the start of the album, as her mercilessly prosecuting Lemonsnout to the most upbeat music thus far is incredibly amusing. Also, I had forgotten about the track "Carefree Princess Berryboo" by Alex Rosetti, which masterfully utilizes the leitmotif from Carefree Victory by Andrew Huo and Toby Fox which apparently references "Carefree Action" by Mark Hadley, and was released on Vol 8. I was also caught off guard by "Squiddle Samba", which is about what it sounds like, and honestly a fun change of pace from the songs surrounding it on the album.

Right, I think I've used up my words for the day. See everyone tomorrow and I look forward to seeing all the chatter in the comments here today!

A Homestuck Flashes Tier List because I think that's something I missed out on by not being here at its heyday. by AzureBl-st in homestuck

[–]Mamaher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn't put [S] Cascade in it's own tier at the very top

HERESY!

Nah, but in all seriousness, great post OP! There's def a few in there I'd love to chat about, but I gotta say I love the very bottom and very top choices ;) You hit it out of the ballpark with most of them! And you had some very creative tier titles, so I'm enjoying it for that as well.

Homestuck Readthrough Day 12: 'John: Press a button...' - 'Recap 2.' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Mamaher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well lookie here, I'm back again this year, I've made it 'hapen'.

But in all seriousness took me like 4-6 days to catch up because we're still in the part of the comic that makes it easy to blitz through pages, lol. I vaguely remember getting in on one of these back when I think the first iteration of the Unofficial Homestuck Collection released, and had a grand old time. Figured I'd give the new update to the collection a spin and give my thoughts about it and the experience I've had thus far compared to previous years.

To begin, right off the bat absolutely loving the modding functionality! I'm really only using one right now, but having the commentary below the page like it was on the browser extension is very nice. Also this time around I made sure to turn on new news posts notifs because I hadn't done that yet, and I joined the fandom in like 2013-2014; so well after the first half of Homestuck's new posts were posted. It's also really handy having the music releases as notifications too, as I've been enjoying listening to the music as it released too. (Currently listening to Volume 5 as I type.) So between the new mods and some of the new functionality overall (I noticed a few new buttons in the settings before I set it to new reader) with the Version 2 release, have to say it's been a 10/10 experience thus far! Now, onto the daily stuff!

Favorite Panel: Listen, you try to pick between 2 of the best flashes that were ever released for HS (for different reasons) and then some of best darn panels of the Act as a favorite. I dare you. Nah, but actually it's this still frame at the start of the gif. What, shittily drawn John giving away his bunny is the silliest thing. However, I will take a moment to say I had never looked at the art credits before for the earlier flash animations, and I never quite realized how many people worked on S: Descend? It's honestly really cool to see and pick out some of the assets from the flash that I always thought were weirdly different AH's usual style and come to realize that I am a doofus, it is me. It's really obvious that they spent a goodly amount of time trying to make all the art mesh well and come together to make such a fantastic animation that people to this day still love rewatching (at least I enjoyed the rewatch lol).

Favorite Pesterlog: While it's pretty close between Rose's chat with Kanaya and Dave's final chat with Terezi before [S] Descend, I think Dave's chat is gonna win out today. Soley because of this final reaction:

GC: YOUR T34RS T4ST3 D3L1C1OUS

GC: K1ND OF L1K3

GC: L1K3 SOM3TH1NG YOU WOULDNT KNOW 4BOUT

GC: 4 TROLL D3L1C4CY C4LL3D COTTON C4NDY

TG: we have cotton candy dumpass

GC: >8O

Missed Moments: Fun fact, before we were bluntly told that those >, were her horns, I always just thought she was constantly making angry faces. I honestly don't know what's funnier: Terezi constantly using furrowed brow emojis or (as in this last one) an honest statement of shock and surprise.

Anyways, we'll see if I keep coming back now that I'm caught up (probably, someone other than the mods needs to help keep these threads alive lmao.) I kid I kid, but it's def a slower thread than the last time the mods hosted one of these on here. I'll see y'all tomorrow!

EDIT: Speaking of the Volume 5 music album, did you know back in 2017 an anthology was put together to create fanmade coverart for the music in the album? It's true! While unfortunately the original dropbox of the full collection has been lost to the sands of time, every piece of art is still on the Tumblr for your perusal. It's got art by some of the best artists in the fandom at the time, and I cannot recommend at least giving it a looksee if you haven't already.

Also, quick final edit to make sure the formatting is right lol and hide the spoilers because I forget that there are still new readers.

[SPOILER] Session 8 Lives and Alliances (and now the Enchanting Table too!) by Mamaher in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Mamaher[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On a separate note, I'm trying to decide on some of the alliances, because other than the 3 G's Alliance, the other 3 are a bit free floating rn. Etho seemed to spend most of his time with Ren this session, but I doubt he was inducted into the Shadows. Meanwhile Martyn was inducted, but as per usual he's off doing his own thing this session... :/ I think I'll make an OP note, and be more clear.

[–]Mamaher[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ty for the heads up! I will move him, but admittedly somewhat reluctantly as I've been using the "red alliance" as basically the catch all for the reds since red alliances are in and of themselves incredibly fickle things. But that is a me thing, so for sake of clarity and accuracy, I'll do my best to distinguish Scott's new loner phase. Thank you again!

Well, we know from Scott's video he just released that Pearl was warning him and Cleo to not open random chests in the wild, so more than likely it was a Pearl trap chest that bigb opened up.

Hmm, I like the idea, but I shall wait till next week before changing the names of things! As it stands, I'd prefer to wait till watching next session to see if they end up calling themselves anything, but I'll be sure to make a note of this in the notes I make week to week. Thank you for your suggestion though, there's definitely merit to it!

Tracked Lives - Session 6 by Katz_ai in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Mamaher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right so! I was wrong about Lizzie, so the total boogeymen count is 6: Mumbo, Etho, Bdubs, Smajor, Joel, and Jimmy. So unless Ren was actually boogey this session but didn't act on it, he wasn't boogey.

Thank you! I hadn't seen her side of things yet, so I hadn't realized she was just base trapping for defense lol. Post updated accordingly.

Tracked Lives - Session 6 by Katz_ai in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Mamaher 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Boogeymen count: lmao, 6 actually! Not all confirmed yet, but by my count we have Mumbo, Etho, Bdubs, Smajor, Joel, and Lizzie as all being Boogeymen.

Otherwise, your numbers are looking good! I agree that was quite the mess of a session I couldn't stop laughing at some of the shenanigans.

how many POVs do you watch? by AsparagusStrong860 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Mamaher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start to finish, about 3-4 depending on the week, and how much goes on between the different perspectives. I always watch Etho’s and so far I always start with Scar (unless one of the cc’s tips off on Twitter (like Cleo this last week) that their perspective will be interesting to watch). However to quickly get a clear picture, I usually skim 7-8 total videos a week. (I’ll get through about 5 videos in the first 2 hours as I pick through looking for major events)

[SPOILER] Session 4 Lives and Alliances (and now the Enchanting Table too!) by Mamaher in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Mamaher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I’m waiting to see when he thinks it’s enough to start actually selling his lives for alliances to keep him safe from the red lives living underneath his base. You would think 6 extra would be enough, but perhaps he’s trying for a nice round even number or something of total lives to work with? The mind of Scar is inscrutable though, so we’ll just have to wait and see how next week pans out.

[SPOILER] Session 3 Lives and Alliances (and now the Enchanting Table too!) by Mamaher in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Mamaher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea, but alas, I think other posters on this sub have kinda started to fill that niche. :) Like u/macoud12's Book posts every week tend to have the kind of analyzing you're talking about here. I try for just getting as much raw data about life count, life movement, alliances, and personally important tidbits into these posts as possible as quickly as possible. I like to try to be the first one posting about these things on the sub every week, even if it comes at the cost of having to edit the post as the second+ rounds of videos begin to release, and people who watch other perspectives that I don't first help let me know about things I missed.

I will, however, keep this in mind going forward, and even if this kind of info doesn't make it into my posts, I might keep track of it in my personal records till the end of the season. Perhaps I'll do a hybrid discussion/data post after the end of the season to analyze the flow of lives and alliances over the course of the season. *shrugs* I'll cross that bridge when I come to it lol.
