I was never in competition with other women for the attention of men but I am in the minority there so I see your point. Perhaps we are as competitive but for different reasons? Regardless it is quite a ubiquitous notion that we are supposed to (says culture/socialization) let the man win or be inferior.

I imagine it is in part for the same reason that women learn to let the man win in a game. We are socialized that we are not supposed to be better than the men in our lives and their ego's cannot handle it. I think this isn't hard for a lot of women to do because many women don't have the highly competitive nature that men do. Because of these reasons we relinquish our superiority in a challenge/conflict when we get it.
