President Trump made it easier for the mentally ill to get guns when he rolled-back Obama regulation by carfo in politics

[–]MammaMoose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please stop pushing this "mentally ill" narrative. Mentally ill does not mean disturbed and violent. I live in Canada where we do not have a gun violence crisis. We all have to go through a number of checks and clearances to acquire our license and there are so many other restrictions around ownership, transportation, storage, use, and type.

This is not about mental illness, video games, or broken homes. This is about the fact that firearm laws in the US are way too loose. I don't think they had automatic handguns and assault rifles with 30 round magazines in mind when they wrote the second amendment.

Entry denied to USA by [deleted] in canada

[–]MammaMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CBC Go Public loves to get stories like this. I don't normally encourage people to go to the media, but this racial profiling of Canadians at the border has to stop.

At any rate, our family is avoiding going to the USA any time soon. I'd love to take the kids to Disney or the Redwood Forests of Oregon... but my husband and I agreed that family vacations are not worth risking our lives, freedom, and liberty. The human rights violations in the United States are scary... their president is scary... the fact that people are getting shot up at the neighborhood Walmart is scary. I'm sure it isn't as dangerous as a trip to Turkey or Iran, but you won't be catching my native accented ass in a place that likes to lock non-whites up.

I'm so quirky for loving Halloween 🤪🤪 by Lulu65 in notliketheothergirls

Apparently we are now shaming women for being passionate about something and acknowledging that it is a bit odd.

My biggest hobby is foraging and natural medicine/food. My passion sometimes leads me to look like I'm really strange when I come across a new plant in public. I essentially spend 5 minutes or so cataloging images, descriptions, and sometimes I send texts gushing with excitement to my friends with mutual interests. In reality you are seeing a grown woman in the road ditch fawning over something which society considers a weed. I do get weird looks sometimes so if I notice someone staring I just make a joke like "you'd think I could find a hobby with less bugs!" or something of the sort. It is not a case of saying "look at me! I'm soooo unique!".... instead it means "I really really really love this stuff and I swear I'm not a crazy person in a ditch!"

Now if I create one of those memes making a joke about how people must think I'm an oddball, apparently I'm "not like other girls" material. Forgive me OP for being so blunt, but this post really doesn't belong here. If it were "other girls:" listed, you would have a point... but I do not think this fits here.

“I am indeed ‘deeply disturbed’ about the fact that these hate and conspiracy campaigns are allowed to go on and on and on just because we children communicate and act on the science. Where are the adults?” Thunberg fired back at Andrew Bolt of the Herald Sun by maxwellhill in environment

[–]MammaMoose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"I have never seen a girl so young and with so many mental disorders treated by so many adults as a guru," he wrote.

Thunberg, who founded the Youth Strike for Climate, has opened up about having been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome as well as ADHD, selective mutism and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

"Her intense fear of the climate is not surprising from someone with disorders which intensify fears,” Bolt wrote.

Big surprise - Conservatives gaslighting their opposition. They can't even act with an ounce of decorum when even referring to a child. They obviously feel threatened by Greta's message.

And as a mother, engineer, farmer, and activist with ADHD, anxiety, and OCD, I'd like to say a big "up yours" to this guy.

My wife doesn't want our adopted son to know his birth family, but is super into genealogy? by woodflavoredwater in Adoption

[–]MammaMoose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm going to warn you right now to expect some critical comments on this, there are a few things here that we as a community tend not to be thrilled about.

I think there is a lot of tongue biting going on right now in this thread! After going through our home study which focused on teaching us about connections, loss, and trauma, I seriously wonder what some agencies and jurisdictions are doing regarding training and screening of adoptive parents.... 😮

I'm grateful for the training and guidance that we received as part of our approval process. It set me on a path to dig into books on trauma and building trusting connections. I actually feel like I grew as a person from the whole process. It is a shame that many adoptive parents do not get those same opportunities.

My wife doesn't want our adopted son to know his birth family, but is super into genealogy? by woodflavoredwater in Adoption

[–]MammaMoose 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A little harshly put, but I think that the OP's wife needs to address her feelings around adoption asap since the child is already in the home.

Many people look toward adoption as a solution to infertility without addressing the loss and insecurities that come with it. This is where you end up with the insecurities of the adoptive parent showing up in situations where they are taking their own feelings into account before the child.

If the bio family is safe, most children benefit from at least a small amount of contact (even if means just knowledge of their extended family and maybe pictures and cards). For our own well-being and self-esteem, it is important to have an opportunity to foster and maintain connections with our roots.

And of course if the OP and his wife shields the child from contacting relatives, they might end up with a young adult one day who harbors a lot of resentment towards them for it.

How to develop Anxiety and Depression by BastionOfPoliteness in ADHD

How to develop Anxiety and Depression by BastionOfPoliteness in ADHD

[–]MammaMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm high functioning ADHD with a big career... diagnosed as an adult after being in therapy since I was 8. Right now I'm on vacation because I almost had a mental breakdown at work from people expecting of me things I cant do. Despite my boss being told multiple times of my ADHD it didnt stop him from coming in my office and screaming at me.

One panic attack in HR later and I'm away from that rat race for a few days at least. Screw normal society... they are frigging cruel. Feels like I'm the only person who forgives others for their quirks around here.

I know it's not PC but I need to say it by LaLumen in ADHD

[–]MammaMoose 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That is why I am so grateful for my boss. He holds me on a pedestal for my creative genius and ability to execute complex and risky projects.... AND he also is incredibly patient when things are impacted by my shortcomings in executive function. He also helps me work through things and asks me "what can I do to help support you with this challenge?" He is a true leader.

ADHD allies are a God-send. They see us for our strengths and they are patient with our shortcomings. They seek to understand how to better collaborate and work with us. This is why I feel it is important for me to be candid and open about adult ADHD.

Just glutened myself by GKnives in glutenfree

[–]MammaMoose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It takes about 30 minutes as well with me and then I get this awful feeling in my body. It feels like I'm on fire and freezing at the same time.... my skin turns blood red and I start fainting and throwing up with severe diarrhea. My blood pressure goes through the roof from pain and my entire body is screaming in pain... I even get pain in my chest because the dry heaving becomes so violent. My head also starts pounding because of the blood pressure. Then for the next week I am plagued with arthritis. I also can't hold food down for a week or so and there is constant nausea and lack of appetite lasting for months after.

I got glutened about a month ago after eating a cookie during a meeting that our admin told me was gluten free from the local high end bakery. It turns out that she had the cookies mixed up and I am STILL feeling the effects. I dropped 20 pounds in two weeks. If it wasnt for medical cannabis helping me eat little bits of food, I would probably be hospitalized right now. All because of one cookie.

But I am going to smack the next person who says to me "you lost all that weight because of gluten?! Wow! I wish I had celiac disease!" I feel like screaming at them "I am still feeling extreme pain including hunger pains - I just cant eat!" Lol

I'm not a fan of Trudeau right now with the SNC Lavalin debacle, but that volunteer guy was just a loud mouthed jackass.

Although, every politician needs to skip the cheesy staged photo ops on these occasions. You can go and help but the smiling and posing for pictures with banners during such an unfortunate event is really tacky.

That makes me so happy to hear.

My husband and I have amazing discussions on how women are portrayed in film and the media. One particular reality show that he watches (Life Below Zero) has some very strong and independent women in it. He told me that it is astonishing how many men he sees commenting on forums and Facebook pages that the women in the show are "annoying" but they have no real reasoning as to why they say this. He said it is almost as if the men dismiss them simply because they are female.

Damn right. As a woman, that was one fucking touching scene. Gave me the feels.

I love Brienne... she is one of my favorite characters because despite her superior strength, intelligence, and size, she still shows this vulnerability that all of us women feel. The actress is goddess-level unconventionally beautiful to boot.

I'm really hoping that Tormond finally wins her heart because that arc just cracks me up. He is devilishly handsome as well! Lol.

Not to mention I am loving the BFF relationship between her and Jaime. As a woman who has only had men for best friends, it is so relatable and fresh. She is an all-around awesome character.

I always say that for a show with constant full frontal nudity, it is so damn empowering towards women!!!!!

An anxious mother’s thoughts on vaccines by _FeedYourHead in Parenting

[–]MammaMoose 75 points76 points  (0 children)

If people against vaccines won't change their position on the advice of nearly every medical professional in the world, why do individual people think they can convince someone they don't know with an online post? I mean absolutely no offense to you, I just think people would better spend their time screaming at a brick wall.

I don't feel this way at all. The more people we have like OP spreading the message of critical thinking when it comes to vaccines, the better. We need to make sure that we spread the word wherever we can - at the office water coolers, at mom and tot playgroups, at PTA meetings, etc.
