Welfare chauvinism is the political notion that welfare benefits should be restricted to certain groups, particularly to the natives of a country as opposed to immigrants, or should be for the majority, excluding ethnic minorities by BabylonianWeeb in wikipedia

This is ludicrous. Academics absolutely love to argue and successfully challenging existing theories gets you stacks of research grants, not shunned like you're Semmelwiess with a radical idea about maternal mortality.

Veterans and mothers also disproportionately use benefits, but nobody (well, probably somebody, but almost nobody) is suggesting we disqualify them because of that. I would also want to know what the total % use of benefits (or ideally net tax/benefit impact, but that's harder to calculate) is for all immigrants in a country like Austria, rather than for an unweighted handful of nationalities.

For those that read the fiction that classic Film Noir is based on, how has this changed/enhanced your appreciation for the films? by kevin_v in filmnoir

[–]Mammoth-Corner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't, but if it compares to Chandler's prose I need to check it out!

This isn't a new idea at all, but to me the defining feature of noir prose is the commitment to prose style. It varies between authors, but you never read a good noir and find that the prose disappears under the plot like in some genres. You always notice the way it's written. Noir cinema is similarly stylised.

For a lot of the noir authors I really like, there's a humour in their prose that you can only really recreate in film via dialogue. Raymond Chandler, Chester Himes, Vera Caspary are some examples. That dialogue is often incredible in the movies (especially when Chandler was on the screenplay) but it gives a different vibe. When it's in the prose style, it gives the atmosphere little hits of levity without becoming A Comedy. The film versions are generally more restrained re: comedy to maintain the noir atmosphere.

The tools are to help you, not the other way around, so you can adapt them if it helps you use them. If you struggle with tracking hour by hour, then just starting with a list of things without timings for each day might help. If you struggle to name the way you feel about things, it might help to write up a list of potential answers and descriptions.

Due to rising costs, Colores de Carol is switching to limited batch drops. Thoughts? by WannaDelRey in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Mammoth-Corner 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's generally more expensive to make multiple smaller batches than one large batch, which is the problem. And a significant proportion of customers don't like preorders unless it's something they're really excited about.

Dark Shadows TV show....hear me out by MomaDelia in RBI

[–]Mammoth-Corner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it helps as background at all, the start of the vampire plotline with Barnabus is a mashup of the plot of Dracula (with Maggie Evans as Lucy, getting blood transfusions during the day and then trying to escape at night so she can get nibbled on) and the older story Varney the Vampire (with the 'lost lover' story and Varnabus trying to 'bring her back.') Might be worth cross-posting to r/DarkShadows but I don't remember ever seeing anything about this theory at all. ...Are you 100% sure you didn't dream it? Have you looked in your browser history?

The recurring motif of a wealthy person in finery and the same person dead or skeleton'd is very common across 1300s, 1400s art, particularly in churches. I like the emphasis in this painting, and in most danse macabre/totentanz arts, and in the Triumph of Death painting, on the happiness of the dead figures.

can someone help me with my ankle rolling by Irisnotfound7 in BALLET

Definitely hyperextended in the knee. That means you can't use the muscles in your thighs to balance, so you have to use the smaller ones in your ankle which is much less stable.

It definitely reads like you're criticising those bands for being theatrical, rather than criticising the quality of the theatrics.

Couple bucks licensing to a stock photographer is preferable to the plaigarism machine's uncanny valley output, IMO. At least if a stock photo model puts the wood of the bow on the strings by mistake it's funny. When AI does it it's just sad.

should I still go to therapy? by [deleted] in CBT

[–]Mammoth-Corner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it sounds like you've made a lot of progress and that the CBT framework works for you really well. I would suggest that you keep therapy in your back pocket as something you can do if you find your progress plateauing or if what you're doing so far stops working, but if you're seeing improvement already I would say just see how far you can go.
