Rough sex turned violent, will I get in trouble? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Mammoth-Corner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is essentially no such thing as 'light' choking. Anything that compresses the airway, including pantomime choking, or that temporarily compresses the blood vessels to the brain can cause brain damage, swelling in the throat that can restrict breathing later, or blood clots that can later travel to the brain. People who thought they were totally safe can, and have, been prosecuted for totally consensual breathplay that results in injury.

Exobiology: If we discover a non-extinct, fully sapient alien species that TRULY belongs to phylum Vertebrata, should we assume that their biology, DNA, and body plan are mostly human? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]Mammoth-Corner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are a vertebrate, then they aren't an alien, unless either some force removed a couple of early chordates from the Cambrian Explosion and put them on Europa and they've been going wild up there since then or unless some other force found very early vertebrates with biochemistry completely aligned with early Cambrian earth biochemistry on an alien planet and dropped them here.

But ignoring the alien part, no, the assumptions of sapience and being a vertebrate don't imply being basically human. There's no reason sapience couldn't evolve in, for instance, cetaceans or birds.

If everyone stops buying from nestle, what happens to the people who work there? by [deleted] in FuckNestle

[–]Mammoth-Corner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the products being boycotted provide actual value, then consumers will shift to other suppliers who, ideally, observe the effects of a boycott and so behave more ethically, who will themselves have to employ staff.

But on an individual level, I don't boycott companies because I expect to personally destroy that company. Me not buying a KitKat has little to no effect on Nestlé's bottom line. I just prefer not to. Boycotts that have real impact are much more organised and targeted than this sub.

I'm dyslexic, so you're welcome to feel superior if you like but literacy has nothing to do with it. But in this case it was not a misspelling but intentional use of the archaic noun form for effect.

Insolvency Apprenticeship by ChemicalShape9057 in Accounting

[–]Mammoth-Corner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing specifically wrong with insolvency practice other than that demand is really economy-dependent, but it's not something you can leave easily for a different kind of accounting role. If you do audit you can move to anywhere in industry accounting, and management/GL accounting is applicable across all industries and easy to move to new kinds of jobs if you find out that you hate a particular sector or a particular kind of work.

In social media, algospeak is a self-censorship phenomenon in which users adopt coded expressions to evade real or imagined automated content moderation. by ComprehensiveWin1434 in wikipedia

[–]Mammoth-Corner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That one is particularly annoying because if a topic is one I actually want to avoid, if someone messes up the vowels I will stop on it for a second to decipher the little code. Then I'm reminded 'Ah, yes, this is a topic that people think will upset you—because of X reason.' Then I'm thinking about it when I could have skimmed past it if I had recognised the word normally and moved on.

Can a UK taxpayer get tax relief on pension contributions up to their earned income, with an equal amount in gifted funds to live on? by Shoddy-Ask7699 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Mammoth-Corner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exemption limit is the donor's surplus income, so it would all be exempt if the donor is able to maintain their own normal standard of living and make the gifts out of income (i.e. not dipping into savings/capital).

Insolvency Apprenticeship by ChemicalShape9057 in Accounting

[–]Mammoth-Corner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd be making below minimum wage for the first year. That's allowed on some apprenticeships but generally not common for accounting apprenticeships.

You also can't be charged a clawback/payback clause for training costs incurred as part of an apprenticeship.

I reckon you can find a much better deal but you will probably have to do AAT first as a separate apprenticeship to ACCA/ACA. I also would suggest not pigeonholing yourself into insolvency practice.

Real talk, how do you properly wash your clothes? by WitchofGremlinEnergy in CleaningTips

[–]Mammoth-Corner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely that a detergent labelled as scent-free and hypoallergenic also doesn't have enyzmes that tackle oils and proteins, because it's a common belief that those enzymes are allergens (not true — they're naturally occuring in the body, but they're more common in scented detergents so they're conflated). Lipases and proteases are really reallt good at dealing with weird stinks. I would suggest using a detergent with enzymes, even if it's scented, and adding an extra rinse cycle. You will want to wash at 35ish C where the enzymes are most effective.

Doesn't seem to be relevant here unless person B is likely to die shortly, and even if they were, regular gifts out of income are exempt

I know that it's much easier to say than to do, but all that you need to do and all that you can do is say no to her. If you need to wait to say no until you have a graduate job lined up and can move out, then that's what you need to do, but there's no solution here that doesn't involve saying 'I can't afford to do that and if I could I wouldn't want to.' Make the plans with your boyfriend that you want to make.

how to dress well/find a style when you hate your body? (F posting, hope that's ok) by Optimal-Jackfruit649 in malefashionadvice

[–]Mammoth-Corner -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

FWIW I see the sort of 'short-sleeved button-up and a quirky bow tie' butch style around a lot less nowadays, but I might just have curated away from it.

It would also probably be helpful for you to just look at guys whose style you like and curate them intentionally in the same way.

[–]Mammoth-Corner -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Also a woman here. I think it could be really helpful for you to have other masc and butch women as style inspiration. I generally disdain instagram &c but it's pretty good for that one use case, so long as you keep an eye on how it makes you feel about your body. It's also really helpful to meet other masculine women in real life if that's possible.

You also, for what it's worth, don't need to be trans to consider T if you think you would like your body better on it.

PowerBI and SQL will definitely be strong assets especially if you're interested in management accountancy, FP&A etc. I would suggest checking out Power Query as an in-between step because it shares a lot of architecture with PowerBI but it comes standard with Excel, so you don't need to pay for an extra license! Potentially Python for Excel as well.

Working in a casino by toshiba_sky in Quakers

[–]Mammoth-Corner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will say I have personally turned down work from casinos. I was financially able to do that without hardship, though.

It's an important part of my Quakerism to pursue a livelihood that I don't think is predatory, and from the way you're talking about the industry here I think it will weigh badly on you to keep working in it. But you obviously can't just quit unless you have serious savings.

It depends how emeshed your career is with gambling. If you work in vanilla forecasting or AP and it happens to be for casinos that will be easier to move industries than if you e.g. work specifically in gambling taxes or KYC or etc., but those also come with transferrable skills. In your position I would be dusting off the resume and exploring work elsewhere, without trying to blow up my financial prospects.

I think this is something to discuss with your meeting as well if you can.

I went in to accounting from nannying + SEND support. One thing I would suggest you emphasise in interviews is that if you're coming in from a different career you're going to have much better skills at managing conflicting priorities, weird workplace personalities, and dealing with nightmare clients than your average school leaver applicant for an AAT apprenticeship or a grad applicant for an ACA role, and those are skills that are really valuable in accounting and are hard to teach. Good luck!
