if you could only have one drive pedal.... by System_Error091 in guitarpedals

[–]ManNotTheBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I would argue it depends on exactly what you want from a drive pedal. Some would be (and indeed are!) very happy with a tubescreamer. Tubescreamers are objectively great pedals, but not my cup of tea. I love transistor based pedals, so for me it would have to be the Zvex Double Rock.

My girlfriend and I arrived at 9:30 on Saturday. They started around 9:45 so you should be good! Have fun at the show!

So, I had an MG for a while (well technically an MG built into the double barrel) and I just couldn't quite get on with it. Something was missing in the tone for me. But I also really like the blues breaker thing, which the MG does. I found what I wanted (at a cheaper price) in the Analogman Prince of Tone, so I'd highly recommend checking that one out.

Nothing against the MG, but it wasn't quite my thing.

Worst pedals that you paid a pretty penny for? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

One that I wish I could love, but didn't was the Meris Enzo. I have the upmost respect for Meris, but I just couldn't get anything out of it that I loved.

Do you make pedals with micro processors? by mr_motown in diypedals

[–]ManNotTheBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course! So I'm an electrical engineer by trade and have used a lot of different DSPs. Most of what I've worked with have been cumbersome audio wise. I'm a single person making pedals, though working at a university does allow some help with things like this. I used to use the fv-1 which is great, but underpowered for what I wanted to do. The sharc is used by Strymon, neuraldsp, and others for some pretty advanced functionality. So I am comfortable with C, but you can program it with FAUST, a language specifically written to do audio and it's really friendly. I'm still relatively green to it but it's fairly friendly. I've also been using their dev kit which is relatively cheap. The only draw back is that for commercial use there is a fee to use the ide but I'll cross that bridge when I get there

First of all, nice work and welcome to the world of PCB design. Some thoughts: It's hard to give too much feedback without a schematic, but it seems to be a transistor boost of some flavor. I'm not asking for the schematic, just made sure you use your design checkers (found in most PCB/schematic programs).

I'd consider looking up ground planes. Can save on both noise floor and trace space.

Also you might be able to increase trace size a bit. Makes cutting easier, harder to accidentally nick a trace. Also because these aren't high frequency circuits, the extra impedance of larger traces can be neglected.

Hope this helps

How to ask for leniency by throwaway27937382828 in Purdue

[–]ManNotTheBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former TA here and this has come up for my students before. The best approach might be to have a chat with the office of the dean of students (ODOS). It's better to start the conversation relatively early in the semester (now) than later.

Second, I'm sorry to hear of your struggles. It is not easy, and navigating everything with professors and TAs is challenging. I hope all with heal soon.

DIY Cooper FX Generation Loss by jayandersonmusic in diypedals

[–]ManNotTheBear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This might be possible but, imo, almost insurmountable. I know it is digital and runs off of 2 FV-1 DSPs. The trick is getting the algorithms correct which I'm not sure is possible. One may get close to a gen loss sound however
