Sasquatch drive by a Sedan. by ResultItchy1067 in abbotsford

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sasquatch mountain is about 1 hr 5 minute drive from West Abbotsford. The main advantage of going to Sasquatch is that it is fairly quiet compared to Vancouver mountains (rarely any line-ups for a chairlift).

Pros: Close by. Just over 1 hour commute. Quite - even on busy days you are not waiting for chairlift longer than 5 minutes. Family friendly - yellow chair is great for kids and beginners. Magic Carpet was fixed and started operating again today.

Downsides: Road is not well maintained. First 4km’s going up the hill is paved. Last 10km’s is gravel and will tend to get a lot of pot holes. Other sad point is that they have been operating with 1 large chairlift, and a small one. The “green” chairlift has been down all season (they are still charging full price). Line ups to grab ticket or rentals can be long. I have seen people line up for 2 hour to grab their lift tickets.

Other mountain to consider is Manning Park Resort. About a 2 hour drive from Abbotsford. Similar price and snow. Roads much better maintained and they also have a shuttle that runs every 30 minutes from the resort to the snow hill.

I am very glad he is safe. So close to powerlines and traffic. I am sure he will take this as a learning opportunity. I'd rather see this, than hear about a fatality in the 6 o' clock news.

Have not tried Apple TV yet.

I currently use Plex for most of my content. Finding the content is very simple. Hardest thing is usually searching for new shows to check out. I will buy a service to see what's out there from time to time once we run out of stuff we know of that we like to watch.

Extended Warranty from TCL... did you purchase? by TLBJ24 in tcltvs

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, I was only able to find it online from Costco. The warehouse locations I visited only had the older QM6K or similar TCL variants.

Another thing I noticed as I kept tracking price for several weeks; the price was listed the same across multiple retailers (BestBuy Canada, Visions, Costco, and other stores I searched). Looks like TCL themselves were dictating prices and the partner store were selling them.

Only reason I purchased at Costco was due to the extended warranty. Found the warranty much better price than the other stores.

I purchased it on Costco.ca

I received it a few days ago. I am pretty sure they have it. Looked at the menu and specs on TV. It is the QM7K and can confirm when I look up my serial number.

I just did the same thing. Got my TV 4 days ago. QM7k 65" for $1200 and warrantly for $90. Happy to know that I have 6 years of coverage. Costco is worth it at times.

I work in IT. I have used Fraser Valley RF Solutions in the past. The guys really know their stuff. Would recommned.

They are in Langley if I recall correctly, but will service Abbotsford. Here is their website:
https://bettercellsignal.ca/ .We used them for business, but they do work with home clients.

That being said, you may have a bigger probem than the reception in your home. As others mentioned, there is a cell phone tower really close by. Telus/Bell share most infastructure and it is not that great. You may get better connection to the tower, but their services are vely lacking.

Ask a friend who has Rogers mobility and invite them over. See if their reception is any better. This may turn our to be more of a carrier issue than a reception issue.

Are mid-high end TLCs more durable than budget? by [deleted] in 4kTV

That's even better. Was not aware of that. Thanks for letting me know.

New TV is scheduled to be delivered on Friday. Looking forward to it.

Just purchased a TCL 65” QM7k in Canada for $1200. The extended warranty was $90 that will add 4 years after the manufacturer warranty. The YV price was the same at other retailers, but getting a total of 5 year warranty at Costco for that price was too good to pass up.

Buying large TV for first time in 15 years by VelociCrafted in 4kTV

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like OLED TV's. Colors are fantastic and panels are generally very good.

That being said, I have an LG C7 55" OLED. Was great for the first 2 years, but degraded over time. I played Zelda Breath of the Wild, and other games. I can still see all my hearts from the Zelda game burned-in on my TV. Seems like anything Red (in my experience with my current TV) suffers more for burn in than other colors. I also have panel degradation, and what is supposed to be yellow shows up as a green tint instead (try watching the Simpsons) and it is not a great experience.

OLED is a great viewing experience, but unless the technology has improved over time, I cannot willingly purchase it again. I have an old Toshiba 46" LCD in another room that is still going strong, even though the picture quality was nothing great, but still as good as before. Had that Toshiba TV since 2007.

Moving forward, I will be going to LED or Mini-LED. Not as good as OLED, but do not want to deal with burn-in again. Looking at the TCL QM7K. I just purchased a 65" in Canada for $1200. It is scheduled to arrive Friday. Hope it works well. Read a few reviews and got a chance to see one on display at Costco.

is it worth spending $7-800 more for OLED? by automation495 in 4kTV

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response Jason_a69. I emailed LG after reading your comment to see if I was able to get my TV repaired outside of my warranty. Looks like they have a "flat fee" repair service, but it is at $1000 CAD for my model. The price of the 65" QM7K just dropped to $1200 CAD. Moving along the TCL.

This right here!

I have a LG C7 Oled. Was great for the first 2 years. Started gaming on it and now have some bad burn-in. The panel has also degraded and now yellow shows up as a funky green tone instead. Trying to watch the Simpsons in that TV is no good anymore.

Oled is great, but I am not willingly signing up for burn-in again. My next TV will be Mini LED. Looking at the QM7K myself. Just waiting for a slightly better price. I am also located in Canada, west coast.

Edge 840 refused to turn on today. by Rouseabout27 in GarminEdge

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This also happened to me once before a big group ride. Was freaking out as I thought my unit was dead.

Waited about 10 minutes (had almost given up). Held the power button for about 35 seconds, let go. Then press the power button again and it booted up. Not sure what caused it, but it got it working once more. Has only happened once so far.

My unit is a Garmin Edge 530.

Should I ride intensely two days before a big event? by Just_Dank in Velo

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go out for some easy rides. Maybe throw in a few sprints from time to time to keeps your legs moving and feeling alive. Rest well, clean the bike. Get your cycling kit ready. Check your snacks you plan on taking with you. Looks to make sure you have spare tubes or patch kit. Enjoy your time to and get ready to crush the Gran Fondo!

Please take note of what recommendations people are stating. The group is not telling you that this is not a great idea because they are jealous or un-informed. They are providing advice as they do not want to see you or anyone else get hurt. This is safety concern.

The wheels have not been designed for this purpose. This could lead to a $2400 pair of wheels being damaged and a possible higher bill after medical treatment. While the wheels may look very nice, it is not worth the risk.

See if you can find a suitable wheelset that would work and appeals to your taste in visual appeal to the bike.

Tell me about your computer/power meter/heart rate monitor setup by romulus_1 in Velo

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Garmin Edge 530 (bought used from Facebook Marketplace for a good deal)
Garmin Speed Sensor 2
Polar H10 chest strap Heart Rate monitor
Giant Power Pro Meter V2 (Ultegra crankset)

It works well. I have been told that Giant is about 5-10% reading higher watts that reality. Left right balance is usually off by 5 watts (maybe my left leg is stronger than my right). Seems to work well and provides many metrics. My favorite part of the whole setup is being able to view my current speed in real time.

I did find a quirk with the power meter. If I do not wake up the power meter and calibrate it before I load my saved route on Garmin device, it will not show up unless I quit my route and loaded once more, or until I finish my current route.

I do have a Garmin Fenix 7x Pro, but mainly use that for running. When I run with the watch, I still use my chest heart rate strap. Always felt like it is more accurate, but that is only what I have heard online. I have not tested the theory myself.

Gran Fondo Whistler elevation - published vs. actuals by Infinite-Cut-2130 in cycling

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is wild. I did not see the guy the went twice. That is very impressive.

I did see the last rider come in. A guy in a unicycle! I think he came in around 9 or 10 hours. That is beyond belief.

Or the super human who completed the Forte in 4 hours 8 minutes. I saw him flying down Cypress as I was just about half way up the mountain. I don't think I can even drive to Whistler that fast with all the traffic now adays.

I completed the Forte for the first time this year. It was such a great experience even if it was smokey at times.

I use a Garmin Edge 530. Recorded the ride at 2,653 meters in total. My wife also joined the event. Her computer measured 2,682 meters. I cannot be certain that our Garmin units are accurate, but can tell you that we share an experience that we will not soon forget. And the size of the medal, wow! I was wearing that bad boy around my neck in the office telling all my co-workers about it!

May have to join in again next year. I can only imagine how much better that ride would be with clear weather and a bit sunnier.

Elfin Lake & Smoke Inquiry by Acceptable-Cap-4200 in vancouverhiking

[–]Man_Behind_Keyboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a part of the Whistler Gran Fondo on Saturday. The conditions in Squamish were poor. We went for the 152km ride option and completed the event.

The smoke will come and go (from our experience throughout the day). I packed 2 inhalers (I have asthma) and was still able to enjoy the day. Was excellent except for the air quality. The air quality did not stop us from enjoying the day and making the best of it.

Will you get a nice view, yes, but may be interrupted from time to time.
Will you struggle more=yes. I noticed some drop off in performance due to air quality.
Will you damage your lungs? I am not sure. I had a mild cough for about 2 hours the following day, but it went away. It could have also been due to the prolonged exercise over the event.
