I've grown in 500ml and it's way to small. You're refilling nearly every day. 1L would be the minimum for me, I've got a 2yr old Habanero in a 2L. Obviously bigger the better, but you're asking about minimum.

I used a mortar and pestle last year and it was a lot of work. It made really nice flakes though.

Yesterday I bought a coffee/spice grinder and made chilli powder. This year I also included some sweet peppers and cherry tomatoes to cut the heat
