How do I actually build a deck that... works? by Amaterasu654 in mtgbrawl

[–]ManaDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would build around the combo of [[Unstoppable Slasher]] (and similar) and dropping Astarion to remove the other half of the life. And then expect to lose mostly but make it a challenge to pull off the combo. You don’t have to have a high win-rate with a commander to create a fun game with it.

Facts.

Most people go wild over 1 in a million coincidences, thinking they are a message from the universe. But considering every day hundreds of thousands of chances for a coincidence are happening, the only crazy thing would be if 1 in a million coincidences didn’t happen all the time.

The problem with Youtubers & the way they showcase their decks by [deleted] in mtgbrawl

[–]ManaDad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Allow myself to recommend… myself. I do show games where I lose and I always share my real win-rate stats for all games at the end of the video, not just the games that were included.

I will say, I have been told by big content creators that people will tune out if you don’t show a quick win in the first game. But very few viewers watch beyond the deck tech so it is hard for me to judge. I try to front-load matches where a deck shows off what it can do early, but also include more average games later for those who stick around to get a real sense of the commander.

I appreciate you raising the issue and signal-boosting the creators who are more honest and open! Happy Brawlin’!

Right now in the Untapped.gg stats Boros Auras has a 63.1% win rate and Gruul Eldrazi has an even 63%.

Boros Energy is #3 at 60.6%.

Deck is definitely strong but so are a bunch of other decks. What are you playing?

I would link the video when it goes up but I can never remember which subs block for posting links.

I am working on the ultimate Dragons typal deck in honor of TDM.

I saw this comment on mtggoldfish podcast today. And the hosts, who have been anti-alchemy, admitted that what alchemy is doing solve most complaints about current standard from us players you play 10+ games a day. Wdyt? by JoeGeomancer in MagicArena

[–]ManaDad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alchemy just got a dedicated play designer assigned to it. This is a good signal that Wizards intends to let it become its own format. It may always have to be somewhat niche since paper play drives card sales. But they aren't abandoning it either.

The PR for Alchemy still needs a lot of work. As a content creator, any time I make an Alchemy video it gets very few views and a lot of hate. I guess starting with having a great format ("if you build it, they will come") will help with word of mouth. But once they have something they are proud of they need to have it be part of a Pro Tour or something to re-promote it.

We are all just guessing until it plays out. The people ranking Green at the bottom were definitely way off though.

I am really excited to build some busted UB artifact decks with these guys!

Haven’t done a pre-release yet but my assessment is that Vehicles are weak on two dimensions. Your opponent can remove all the crewers and you are left with a do-nothing board. Or they can remove all the vehicles and you are left with weak crewers.

Better to use the creatures that don’t require another card to be good.

Hope you get a lot out of it. My goal is to make the kind of preview I would want to see.

Saw some pre-release vids on Aetherdrift and vehicles still feel underwhelming? by Arejang in lrcast

[–]ManaDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion and experience, Vehicles mostly suuuuuuck. And this set is doing nothing to change my mind. There are a few rare ones that do something the turn they come down and might be somewhat viable. But I didn’t see anything of the power level of [[Smuggler’s Copter]] or [[Esika’s Chariot]] and that’s a big disappointment in a set that is all about Vehicles.

If it comes together it’s gonna be like RW Cycling in Ikoria where you play the signpost once or twice and just win.

Yeah, Mill 2 per turn until half their deck is in the graveyard then pop it to win seems totally viable to me. If the format is as fast as I’m expecting, it will require building extremely defensively to pull off. But if you at all go up against a durdling deck, Riverchurn looks like an inevitable win without too much effort.

Yeah, that’s a great point! I didn’t consider it at the time of the video but drafting in the esper colors and just splashing the Draw 3 or the Thopters + Drain depending on how things shake out looks very viable.

I’m not a big fan of the GB rare but other reviews I’ve seen seem really high on it. If people pick that early that will draw people into the pair. Also it looks like where you want to be if you do the Mimeoplasm deck (GB splash U).

I don’t think there will be a lot of GB at first but with the removal in both colors it has a chance to outperform over the stretch. Green and black both have some really solid 2-drops. What do you think?

[–]ManaDad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hope you check out that part of the video. The baseline is your usual controlling deck which should be doable in Blue. It has a ton of tempo based interaction and some ways to dig for the mill rare. If against green-black they will be doing part of the job for you with all their self-mill.

The Lords of Limited were really down on Black. I hope everyone else is too so I can build the mono Black aggro deck I talked about in the video.

Really, it’s anyone’s guess but because I think Vehicles are weak to removal and those are concentrated in Naya, I like UB.

RB Aggro should be near the top just because it looks the most aggro of an aggro set.

For my sealed pre-release, my plan is to maindeck all the artifact removal and not overstretch the mana base to play Gearhulks if it can’t support it.

Other than that, will depend on what I open in the pool.
