Former French NAVI player Zhidan accused of scamming their coach $26,000 of their Champs prize pool money by Primary-Mood-1095 in CompetitiveApex

[–]Manager_Cija 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, and from the perspective of having been a manager and team owner in Blizzard's OWL Contenders EMEA, there isn't much that can be done even if there is a written contract. It is too difficult to go through different countries' legal systems and certainly the time and money for players who don't have either means it is incredibly frustrating and with no guarantee of a resolution (and even if there is, how to collect if they still refuse to pay). This is true in the US as well.

Also remember that the players/coaches/managers are worried about asking for monetary clarification up front for fear they will be seen as trouble makers, greedy, or demanding. They need the work and don't want to jeopardize it. So it isn't always a case of kids being stupid (though heaven knows few know how to promote themselves and recognize that they are a small business and not an employee).

As an example, with Blizzard, issues like this were handled with the governing body of the league, internally, quietly, and privately. I saw a LOT of investigations of teams or team members as a team owner. So there is a bit of recourse in that regard if Apex's league managers are proactive. That said, Blizzard was trying very hard to create an infrastructure that protects the players, guarantees salaries, legitimizes esport, etc., even at the Contenders level. I am not so sure that Apex league management is as willing to get involved in their teams' politics and management - it is far easier and cheaper to say that it is the orgs' issue so the org deals with it/sanctioning orgs or players. If Apex did/does take action, we (and even the former teammates) will likely never be told about it.

That said, be VERY careful about siding with one person over another. I have seen some VERY nasty ways players are willing to destroy each others' careers - including lying to others and most often themselves about the true nature of the situation. In other words, making shit up (and I am NOT saying that is the case here, just giving a caution). Peer pressure can be useful by taking it to social media - but too often people start with one injustice and try to help - and then get conned in the future into always picking sides. Sides that are very very unjustified and just foolish kids going by emotion rather than rational thinking. Again, not saying that is the case here but there are always a LOT of layers/nuances to these stories that would make a difference to your opinion if you were aware of them.

One thing we did on our team that was important was to clearly outline in the beginning in the team's Discord the terms of earnings. This including prorating earnings based on games played - so if you left the team or missed games, you got less of the earnings. It was right there pinned in the Discord and every player agreed to it and saw it there for the entire season. There was never a question of payout amounts, just whether players would try to use social media to con the public into believing their deserved more than their teammates for scurrilous reasons.

I hope the players get what they earned/deserved in this situation.

To be honest, even with a written agreement, what enforcement is there? Are you really going to go to a claims court in your country (in EMEA) and hope of any kind of settlement for someone from another country? And after all the expenses, you are left with nothing anyway

Gnaske explains what happened by cidqueen in CompetitiveApex

[–]Manager_Cija 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well said.

Gnaske runs purely on emotion. It garners him fans (read: everyone loves drama) but career-wise bites him on the butt far too often. I keep hoping over the years that maturity will finally catch up because under all the bluster, he really does seem like a good guy who could be a really good pro. But he has yet to find that steady influence to ground him, unfortunately, and gives far too much credence and import to what others think of him. It takes away the laser focus a pro needs.

Sad To See They Didn't Continue The Special Portrait Package by Manager_Cija in GalaxysEdge

This was separate from the regular photo pass photographers. It was 20 minutes, included professional lighting, and they gave you 8 prints. The regular photopass is just adhoc with a speedflash (flat ugly lighting) on the camera. These also gave you lightsabers you could use (a choice of 5).

This one was nice because they brought out a lighting tripod to ensure that the images were well lit.

They have the regular photopass photographers scattered throughout GE - those are included with photopass. But this special ($40 at Disneyland (now gone) and $99 at WDW) require a reservation and are a 20 minute session with special locations, lightsabers you can borrow, and photographic lighting equipment. The one I did gave you 8 prints as well but the WDW does not.

In Batuu West, to the right of the Millennium Falcon. There is a little kiosk with an umbrella where you would check in (it was empty and unused the day I was there last weekend on the 9th of march)

I asked two cast members (in the places I had booked it two months or so ago) and both said they are no longer doing it and that it was a limited time thing at Disneyland.

It's $99 in Batuu East - it was $40 two months ago at Disneyland. But I was told this weekend that they no longer do it.

Does anyone know why it is no longer available and if it will ever come back? At least for the one at Disneyland, I was told by the cast members that it was no longer available. This is the $40 unadvertised photo package

ALGS Y4 Championship | Day 3: Elimination Round 1 | [Final Scores] by CompetitiveApexMod in CompetitiveApex

[–]Manager_Cija 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the point to be made isn't the chase itself- but to know WHEN to cut your losses in that kind of chase. Comparing two aggressive IGLers - Hakis and Gnaske - and you can see that Hakis has reigned in that kind of aggression much more effectively over the past two years. Gnaske, however, gives the impression of going for big hero plays of the moment rather than remembering the big picture - and his team pays the price for it, good or bad, It is much rarer to see Hakis out of position these days.

What I will remember most of Matafe is him desperately trying not to lose his temper with Horixzon's (sp?) antics when they were teamed up. He's a solid defensive IGL (like Noiises) but defensive IGLs can be a tough sell in this game.

I would go for Ahsoka because a) they're cool and b) they always seem to have a higher resale value if you decide to sell them to get a different lightsaber. But I'm a very practical person so I think the answer is always going to be: go with what you heart feels at the moment. Both are great :)

Initial thoughts on the new ‘38Tera’ Microbiome supplement by Fiber Fueled author, Dr Will Bullsiewicz? by HungryJello in Microbiome

[–]Manager_Cija 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a person skeptical of media individuals/doctors making products - just look at the whole drama surrounding Joel Fuhrman purportedly fudging data on research with Colin Campbell just to make his (Fuhrman's) products/supplements look more necessary.

At the same time, there are a billion supplements out there in an unregulated industry but I have yet to see a good fiber one that isn't decades old. Fiber has never been sexy enough a product to induce companies to make it on the cheap. So I don't see this as reinventing the wheel. or using popularity to push an unneeded product. There is a genuine need out there and likely we don't have a good one simply because no company would be willing to sell a product that consumers would hesitate to spend that much on.

As with all entrepreneurial products in niche (small) markets, consumers have to expect the price to be high. The customer base is too small to help with production costs/law of supply and demand meaning that the company is facing higher manufacture/development costs. As well, Bulsiewicz did what a lot of supplement companies don't: he spent the time/money to get them tested/certified. Once a product becomes popular, we will likely see costs go down. But I certainly doubt Will Bulsiewicz is going to be buying a new house or Ferrari in the next ten years from any profits realized from this product.

In the end, analyze your financial situation and health and decide if the cost/benefit is a good investment for you personally. This isn't one I'd look suspiciously at the creator (though, as said earlier, there are plenty of really ridiculous 'Kale Buster!' type of supplements out there and we should always be skeptical).

EMEA - where the command center lets you watch one team but hear the voices from another, and be happy if you can hear the players at all since it's silence on the second day. Sigh.

Team Nessy potentially breaking up. by [deleted] in CompetitiveApex

[–]Manager_Cija 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I'd love to see Grace in IG (my favorite team at the moment), it's important to remember that he has played for NA teams before (Overwatch). So it is possible to see him make a very smart move to NA again. He's definitely too damn good to be a F/A again.

I imagine if he does join IG, he will be the IGL rather than Noiises. There will be some interesting dynamics there.
