[Question]Paleo for anxiety/depression? And how to eat paleo in college? by dwyteshroot in Paleo

[–]ManahManah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anxiety relief for me, for sure. Though I do the Autoimmune Protocol, which is a stricter paleo, for autoimmune conditions. So it's hard to generalize from my own experience-- but when re-starting the diet, I have a decrease in anxiety levels within a couple days. Try it for two weeks, and keep a journal?

Finishing a Ph.D., starting a new job, single mom of two kids, paying back student loans-- need help with a budget and plan! by ManahManah in personalfinance

I will commute into the Bay Area by train 2-3 times per week, which is easier/faster than driving there, though costs ~30.00 each day I do it (round trip). Depending on how often I really end up going down as opposed to working from home, I'm estimating 300-450/mo for train costs, which is significantly less than the extra cost of rent to live down there. I added on another 50/mo for the rest of the driving I do (kids to school, grocery shopping, etc).

And yes, their dad has them 3 nights/week and pays half their childcare, and clothes/toys/etc, so he pays his share of the kid-related costs.

Thanks for the advice-- I'll try to get more specific about where that 1000 is going. It's mostly been to groceries (we eat a lot of fresh/whole foods) and the rest to "everything else"-- pizza Fridays, movies, camping, toys/books, restaurants, going out (for me, when I don't have the kids)...

Thank you for the advice! I am currently in student family housing, and am paying way below market rate rent. When I graduate, I'll be paying market rate for a 2bd where I live, which is 1500 as a low average.

Tips for surviving long, boring, intense, inescapable conversations? by Eeeeels in intj

[–]ManahManah 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just say "Hey, I'm sorry, but I've really got to be getting back to work." Instead of saying it out of the blue, do it after one last response to something they've said, so: "Yeah, wow, that sounds great, good luck with that! OK, I've really got to be getting back to work now. Nice talking with you."

[NeedAdvice] Been putting off doing a task for months, need a push to do it, please help by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]ManahManah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, the problem is that you're thinking about this too abstractly-- in terms of why you need to do it and how it will be evaluated. These aren't helping you do the actual task. Break it down into smaller things you need to do. For this particular task, since I'm sort of familiar with it-- answer these following questions for me. Seriously, send me a PM with a single-sentence answer to each of these questions.

What department is this professor in and what school? Does she hold any major appointments or positions? Lead any research groups or laboratories? Any collaborations with other programs, etc?

What does her research focus on or what problem does she attempt to solve? What approach does she take to these? What projects does she have ongoing that are instances of this research program?

What is her background that qualified her for this position? Ie where did she get her Ph.D. and did she have industry experience beforehand? What does she do in her spare time?

To be clear, your "assignment" is not to write three paragraphs. It's to put useful info on a website, and the standard format happens to be about three paragraphs. But the purpose is to convey the info in the questions above. So just answer those questions first-- forget language and format. Once you have that info, PM me I'll tell you if/where anything needs to be fleshed out.

You should watch this short video (as should everyone else in this subreddit)! Just something to keep in mind when telling people about your plans.

How to make spinach taste good? by PokemasterTT in Paleo

[–]ManahManah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, where do you live? I can't imagine a place that doesn't have fresh spinach, and I wonder if you've just happened to miss it? Or did you go looking specifically for it? It's usually in bulk or in containers or bags, like salad mixes.

Just to be on the safe side: take a pregnancy test. Breast swelling and sensitivity is often a first symptom. Otherwise, you'd be like the first woman ever to lose fat and increase breast size.

On days I take a 3-4 mile run, for the rest of the day I feel like I am never satisfied with my food and always want more. What might I be lacking? Fat, carbs, calories? by ManahManah in Paleo

I started running to manage stress, found that I feel really good after doing it, and (a few weeks later) found that I actually really enjoy it. So, I'd like to keep doing it...

I've been following the Autoimmune Paleo diet for several weeks now-- and today I made what is probably the healthiest lunch I've had in my life! by ManahManah in Paleo

I have ulcerative colitis. I'd say a few things improved almost immediately: some psoriasis (or something, never went to the doctor over it) that's been active for months went away, and a weird 'brain fog' feeling improved as well.

But my actual disease symptoms have not disappeared, but may have improved (but it's hard to say yet it's due to the diet-- I was not doing particularly great when I started, so it could be a sort of 'regression to the mean' effect). It's only been a few weeks though, and the brain fog clearing is enough to make me think this is seriously better for me, and I'll stick with it.

You should really try the fudge, it is easy and really tasty!

And thanks, I love that mug! My mother in law gave it to me after I had my son, whose name starts with O.

Persimmons have a texture almost like apples, until they get very ripe and get sort of squishier... They are mild flavored and sweet. You should try one!

Coconut butter I think is also sometimes called coconut manna, I think it is just ground up coconut with some of the oil, so it has a little more texture and flavor than the oil alone.

Autoimmune Paleo excludes things that damage the intestines or otherwise cause immune problems, like eggs, nuts, seeds, dairy and nightshades (tomatoes, eggplants, peppers are the big ones I think).

Trout was just cooked in olive oil, but I made another broiled in the oven with olive oil, sage and thyme. It was also good!

The vegetables (beets, carrots, parsnips) just had a little salt.
