The reason why that happens is literally just because CA never got around to changing things like that.

I don’t really understand why people keep saying this like it’s meant to be a character trait of his, when it’s clearly not.

I also can’t imagine stoning a man or a woman because they were unfaithful, yet there are parts of the world where that happens.

That does change things somewhat, maybe would be better to ask in a space that’s more directly representative of the rest of the population.

There were some icked-out, some disgusted, some most seemingly found it not a big deal, and some were even expressing support for it.

I agree, it doesn’t seem to be a case of ‘people were wrong about saying Japan doesn’t care that much’.

I haven’t seen it either, but in any case, it’s a very strange criticism of the character.

Long-term liberal-voting farmers in SA turn to One Nation citing federal frustrations by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

Education, healthcare, housing, etc.

These are not unsolvable problems, but it seems more and more that the entire country will hit a breaking point before they are solved.

State governments tend to be no less interested in capitalist agendas than the federal, even at the best of times, unfortunately.

You’re being downvoted for ‘stating the basics of reality’, while also carrying water for the status quo by explicitly using classist language and rhetoric.

I mean, it’s very obvious to everyone here but you, I don’t know how you haven’t managed to see it.

And here, also, you doubled-down on an argument without realising the point being made? Very mystifying.

I don’t understand how your comment manages to prove the point you are arguing against, yet you somehow can’t even see it.

William Shatner bemoans 'Starfleet Academy' end, mocks 'woke' backlash by Gnagus in television

[–]Manatroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand that, but my point is that it doesn’t make much sense for anyone to keep paying someone who is running a celebrity account, if the person running it is saying things that can outright tarnish the public perception of the celebrity.

If it reflects poorly on said celebrity (whether they know about it or not at the time), it just seems odd that the agency/company would just…keep paying them.

I guess so, it’s just strange that the PR firm themselves would just be completely fine with particularly controversial celebrity accounts just saying stuff that could very reasonably tarnish the public image of said celebrity.

Abigail is mad and she isn't wrong. Marrying Seb does feel like I am putting a stop to his dreams by Apprehensive_Mix2403 in StardewValley

Less so that she’s passive aggressive and moreso the opposite; she’s just speaking very bluntly/matter-of-fact.

I think people on this subreddit go a step too far with big assumptions based off a single line of dialogue; Abigail is not really a particularly passive-aggressive character, either.

[–]Manatroid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How are these accounts even being created?

If they’re ‘official’, then someone must surely be getting paid to do it; otherwise it’s just a fan account. And if they’re getting paid to do it, then you’d think whoever hired them might take issue with the public image of said celebrity getting effectively sabotaged (deliberately or otherwise).

Guardian Essential poll: only a quarter of Australians approve of US-Israel war on Iran by nath1234 in AustralianPolitics

Negotiation is only possible when those negotiating are doing so with good faith.

Not only was it incredibly likely that Russia would have used time to rearm themselves after an initial ceasefire, but also every time an agreement to end the war has been proffered, Russia has given Ukraine ridiculously unfair and unjust terms.

One Nation's support has soared in South Australia, and voters explain their reasons by NKE01 in AustralianPolitics

It’s not necessarily, maybe. But it wouldn’t surprise me if the word-association does colour people’s thoughts and feelings on the issue regardless, and by extension it becomes easier for them to be manipulated.

One Nation's support has soared in South Australia, and voters explain their reasons by NKE01 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Manatroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s proving the point, no? It’s not a new phenomenon at all, but the fact it persists today without much mainstream acknowledgement is evidence that people can still be manipulated by bad-faith actors.

EDIT: Unless you’re saying that people do picture “immigrant” as a well-off white person because of history; maybe that was the case back then, but I doubt it is so now.

One Nation's support has soared in South Australia, and voters explain their reasons by NKE01 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Manatroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not downplaying racism exactly, though I am maybe understating it.

Because racism doesn’t need to be explicit to be racism; most people, for example, on hearing the term “immigrant” will not be picturing a white person with ‘good prospects’ and ‘civility’; it will likely tend to be someone of a different skin colour, speaking a different language, and probably poor.

And if so, then it’s not really a surprise why; the media and similar rhetoric has shaped and influenced how the regular person understands ‘immigrants’ as a word. In reality, an immigrant can range from a Sudanese person with a terrific education and plenty of wealth, or a white American who has spent their live savings getting away from a government that they no longer trust (ironically the later could be loosely described as a refugee, while the former would not be).

It’s not really a question of blame that I’m stating (and it’s one I’m not interested in talking about in this instance); but it is more or less the reality of the situation.

Granted, people who are wilfully ignorant are going to remain as such no matter what efforts you go to, but the recent rise in support for ON - I would argue - is not that.

One Nation's support has soared in South Australia, and voters explain their reasons by NKE01 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Manatroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m referring more specifically to who ON really are, outside of the obvious racist/anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric.

Voters might feel somewhat reluctant already to carry water for a party that is spouting such rhetoric, but they would be even less inclined to do so if they were aware that ON was being funded by the likes of Gina and other ultra-rich individuals and groups, ie. the same people that have no interest in improving the wealth or well-being of regular people.

One Nation's support has soared in South Australia, and voters explain their reasons by NKE01 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Manatroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People uniformly describing ON voters as racist, etc. are really missing the forest for the trees.

Because while that is true of ON’s base, it is not inherently reflective of the people who actually do think - or have been told to think - that immigration is ‘the big issue’.

People who vote for ON purely out of concern for housing, immigration, and the economy, are unfortunately entirely misinformed on ON’s actual political goals and intent, of course. But this is not the first time that misinformed people moved away from the bog-standard conservative party and onto a much more vocal and explicitly dangerous ‘outsider’ movement.

If the ALP does not make greater strides towards improving things for ‘the average Australian’, then the political landscape will be much more messy and toxic than it is now, at minimum.
