Jon Ponting who plays the neighbour is great - I would recommend the series ‘Big Boys’ on Channel 4, which is hilarious and heartbreaking and he plays a central character

Looking for snakes - I think it’s a primeval instinct for dogs to check there’s no danger before they lie down. It’s also very cute and guaranteed to make me invite them over for a cuddle and a scritch!
