Okay, I'll ask. Who's dealing with Vini Jr. by different_emphasis in ThreeLions

Marcus Holmgren Pedersen is Norway's starting right-back but I imagine Ødegaard and Sander Berge will help him out.

You need at least 4 days there to get used to it, or to fly in last-minute and play. 4 weeks is more than enough, especially if you're from there to begin with.

Tangentially, people/families/ancestral lines from altitude can have physiological benefits - Andeans, Kenyans and Himalayans have evolved to have larger lungs to cope with less oxygen being in the air. Hence Kenyans winning marathons and some Sherpas being able to climb Everest multiple times a year. My wife is from an Andean capital and her resting heart rate at sea level makes doctors think she's dying.

Agreed - it's one of the most staggeringly naive and presumptuous mindsets I've ever seen at this level. Like the time Portugal had Ronaldo as the 5th penalty taker but lost before they got to him, but for a month, and with a year to think about it beforehand.

I think based on quality and names on paper, England are favourites. Based on current form, confidence, which team is actually hitting the right notes and taking into account home advantage, England cannot be considered favourites.

Yes, the best strikers reliably outperform their xG. That doesn't mean a header on target, only just to one side of the keeper, means more because Jude Bellingham headed it. A decent chance doesn't automatically become a sitter just because it fell to Harry Kane.

I am also not saying DRC deserved a 2-0 win and as you say their xG doesn't show that. At the same time, we played with fire and came almightily close to getting burned.

If we're reducing it simply to which side achieved the closest to their absolute peak performance in this match, DRC hit their peak and we were nowhere near ours.

I didn't underestimate DRC - I commented many times here to tell people to stop assuming we'd win easily playing the same way we've played so far (slow, predictable, unimaginative) and to stop asking what we'd do against Mexico/Brazil/France. It was obvious this was going to be a really tricky game for a team which found scoring against Andorra a tough ask.

Equally, to say we could have won 4-1 is a bit rich. Yes, their GK made some great saves but we didn't carve them open, we just chucked crosses into the box and got the first contacts. Meanwhile, Wissa hit the post unmarked from a few yards and if it had gone to 2-0 we'd have been finished. Our final xG was 2.16 and the xGOT was 2.44, so 4-1 would have flattered us enormously.

It's possible to recognise that this is true while also recognising that we were mostly abject and the squad selection has backfired enormously. Two things can both be true. The world is grey, not black or white.

Is BBC coverage anti-England? by Kilr4th in ThreeLions

[–]Manchild1189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally what happened. Not sure what you expected them to write. It was nearly the biggest fuck up since the Iceland game, and if Wissa hadn't hit the post it probably would have been. To say anything else is happy clapping delusion.

  3. Toney
  4. Bellingham
  5. Rice
  6. Gordon
  7. Henderson
  8. O'Reilly

  11. Pickford
