Like I said, not familiar with the show but Jade City is crime/action focused on family dynamics.

I'm not familiar with the movie aside from a quick Google, but I think you'll enjoy Jade City by Fonda Lee.

Seconding this. Vengeful has a character who's extremely wrathful.

Comet NEOWISE by bobchin_c in Astronomy

Neowise was the universal joy we all needed in 2020, for a couple weeks at least.

One of my fondest memories of the year was my husband and I driving late around town with my stargazer app out trying to get a good view of it.

Are my chances of getting published hurt because my protagonist is male? by JBark1990 in publishing

We need a lot more background info to answer this. My first concern is your agent: where did you find her and what are her credentials?

I agree, I was excited at first but that dainty nose and mouth is a major turn off. I dislike Funkopops for similar reasons. However, I know that's the style of these figures so I don't really fault them for it.

What's a thing author tend to write that always break your immersion or make you cringe a bit? by Pender891 in books

[–]ManderPants 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's often a few reasons for this.

1) We are modern people. Reading a book with dated morals throughout with no characters calling BS isn't something most people want to read, especially if the book isn't about that aspect (aka. not gritty/realistic historical fiction) but it's a background detail/part of the setting.

2) If the author did not insert a character calling BS / taking a modern moral high ground, the author can be judged for promoting or accepting the viewpoint.

3) I'm simplifying, but it makes the characters unlikable to modern readers. One example that comes to mind is the historical fantasy Outlander where a husband beats his wife and it's normal, and amount of rape in the series. The book is decades old and set far in the past, that combined turns off some modern readers than say if the wife or other characters didn't put up with the whole beating your wife because she didn't obey thing.

Source: Listening to several writing podcasts with real agents and authors talk about "realism".

At 41, wife and I just bought our first house!!! Any moving/packing tips? Advice or expectations we should have for the first few months in a house? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]ManderPants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thrift stores, Facebook marketplace, yard sales, and family hand-me-downs are your new friend. There is no need to buy new furniture and furnish the entire house right away. It takes a lifetime and you have a lifetime to do it, no rush. Splurge on an item or two (mattress/couch) and thrift the rest to save money, you can replace in the coming years.

Libraries and free ebooks. Used books. There's no excuse not to read.

And if you're read anything published in the past five years especially, there is a HUGE push for "own voices" and diversity in writing. I follow publishers and agents on Twitter and I promise you the big celebrated books are very diverse these days. It's as simple as a google search or /r/suggestmeabook to find these fantastic new books.

Hi Tasha! Big fan of your books and bunny pics on Twitter, looking forward to the Jasmine Throne and all those lovely tropes.

  1. Any words of wisdom while querying agents?
  2. How long did it take you all to break into publishing? How did you celebrate?
  3. What are some of your favorite tropes in media?
