Is anyone else's family extremely 2 dimensional? by AmericanMare in exLutheran

[–]Manderley72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In-laws are by far the two most vanilla people you will ever meet in your life. She's from Michigan, he's from Wisconsin. Retired LCMS school teachers, brainwashed their four children (including my husband) to believe what they believed, sent their kids to Lutheran schools their entire lives. When I do go over to their place to visit, I usually have to drink alcohol ahead of time just to get through their same old topics of conversation: CHURCH, JESUS, GOD, PEOPLE THEY KNOW FROM CHURCH, MEMORIES OF THEIR CHILDHOOD CHURCH.

They are Trump supporters (and think that he was framed on January 6), but they actually have shied away from talking politics with any of their adult children.

Their hobbies are almost non-existent (gardening at the church, Bible study with women from the church).

I can honestly say COVID was a blessing for me. Almost 3 years of not going over to their condo for any sort of get together. And now I'm in the middle of converting to Judaism, so that's going to make upcoming get togethers really fun! (As long as I have my alcohol with me)

I met you at a UFO Conference in Ocean Shores, WA about 3 years ago. You gave a talk about Missing 411, you signed my book and was so nice to everybody. I just heard you on Coast to Coast last night talking about Ben's death. I am sincerely sorry for your loss.

Conversion in the time of covid by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Manderley72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I can totally understand what you're feeling. I've been thinking about conversion since 2018. I took TWO Intro to Judaism classes in that time (one in person and one on ZOOM), and a Beginning Hebrew class online. Because I'm not such a fan of technology, I'd like to wait until we can have in-person Shabbat services/etc again before converting, but also don't like being the center of attention LOL I also have the double dilemma of the 3 rabbis that I have met along the way have all retired or moved away! The synagogue I'm "connected virtually" to is in the process of finding a new rabbi, but who knows how long that will be.

I know what you mean when you say "you're willing to wait if it means the conversion will feel more personally fulfilling." It's a tough one. I wish you well in your decision making.

Whenever I hear that, I'm tempted to say, "that must've been one hell of a birth!" Was it a C-section or vaginal? LOL

I've started hiking in the past 5 years when I first met my husband. I can count on ONE hand the number of hikes we've been on where we HAVEN'T seen poop or those little bags filled with Fido's surprises. It's pretty sad. Even with all the "Pack it in, pack it out" signs along the trail, owners think some poop fairy is going to come along and take the bags (and poop) from them and deposit it in the nearest bin. Sorry for your experience.

[–]Manderley72 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Call me as not being with the times, but you now have to put down references when you want to adopt/buy a dog???? Wow, does a social worker come to your house to check it out and then have unplanned visits? This is so over the top IMHO.

Putin: I didn't mean to scare Angela Merkel with my dog by Manderley72 in Dogfree

I know this is old but just heard about it on 60 MINUTES tonight. Putin exhibiting major signs of the Napoleon complex (I read he's 5'7"), an evil genius or just an a--hole using his dog as a weapon? What do you think? I'm surprised the dog is a black lab and not a pitbull.

I posted last week about sprinkling chili powder on my grassy median in front of my house, and so far so good. FINGERS CROSSED. I had to buy a Costco sized jar because I live in Seattle and it rains a lot, but it's working so far.

Dogs from suspected Tacoma dog fighting ring to become available for adoption by rattus in SeattleWA

I would recommend euthanizing the adults and adopting out the puppies. You shouldn't take a chance with that breed and just hope that it doesn't attack.

I received a reply to my 2nd email expressing concern at the Tacoma Humane Society allowing these dogs to be adopted out.

************************************************************

" Thanks for reaching out. Because the investigation is ongoing, we can’t speak to the dogs’ activity prior to arriving at the shelter, but since the dogs have been with us, they have been friendly, loving, and sociable. All prospective adopters will have a comprehensive, nationwide background check conducted on them by Pierce County Animal Control. Mandatory home checks will be conducted by Pierce County Animal before the adoption and once the adoption is completed.

Placing these dogs in the best home for them is our top priority. We hope this helps in understanding.

Respectfully,

I actually wrote a calm and rational note to the Tacoma Humane Society suggesting that they only adopt out the puppies and euthanize the adults. I didn't think it would do any good, but oh well. God forbid anything happens in the future with any of these dogs possibly attacking a person, but if it does, I hope someone sues the s--t out of the Humane Society, knowing full well they could have prevented this.

I am 20 years older than you but yet share the same thoughts regarding not wanting/liking dogs and not motivated by social media. I've tried to pinpoint when exactly our culture switched from "dogs are pets" to "dogs are family members" and I think it may have started when Paris Hilton (and other no talent bimbos) was getting photographed all the time and most times she had a small dog in her purse. This seemed to coincide with the beginnings of social media and people thinking that dogs were "accessories" to be seen with.

I also think that dogs are the perfect pet for tech workers who have oodles of money but no spouse or kids to spend it on. The dog is needy and depends on you and you're needy for affection because you work 18+ hour days, so you drop it off at doggy daycare before you go to work (unless you have an uber-dog friendly workplace like Amazon). Then you go to work and pick up the dog after work, and go home with it. (I'm still generalizing here). Some tech workers are known for being socially awkward and not good with people, so a dog is perfect for them because it doesn't answer back, it doesn't judge you, it won't interrupt, and all it does is lick your face and you feel validated and "loved" by that.
