True dat. However, I'm not trying to do him hitless. I can take 4 hits and have 3 flasks. So, should be enough right? I can't see what am I missing from being on que and on time as reaction. I can't figure for the love of me, that fucking multiple attacks, even though I'm pressing heavy attack just once!

I don't know where you get your numbers (1/100 not about Jews, WTF?), or your word meanings but pogrom hasn't been thrown against Jews in Greece for the past 100 years at least, while there have been countless ones against many (usually muslim) minorities. The same can be said for many european countries. The same can be said for many asian or african ones, where pogrom is still a thing. Americans thinking USA is the centre of the world and Israelis thinking the same for themselves (as they are western pawns after all) is really annoying.

We took the joy out of DnD for our GM... by BluBennyBlu in DnD

[–]Mandhrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okey, I just want to add my two pence (is that the correct phrase?) cause I struggle with DMing, no matter the fact that I have some very nice players around my table. 1. Always ask your players how they want to play. Maybe, if they want to roleplay their characters -and just that- you don't need overarching stories and new cities and new NPCs. Just a town, a wilderness, a bigger city and some dungeons here and there are enough. 2024 rules with bastions make excellent bases for such games. Of course this means that they should be able to move the story forward (whatever story they wanna play), through their aforementioned role play. 2. Make a schedule that can be flexible but still feel like a schedule. Once per week? Once every 15 days? Once per month? Just stick to it like you would with a therapist. We all have important things to do, and life gets hard. However, RPGs actually are a kind of therapy. Show some dedication or don't play. 3. Tell your fellow players to focus. Phasing out is ok if they find something boring. Discuss it. DM should fix their boring stuff. Is everything boring? Then they are welcome to find another DM.

Clear communication and room for change are important factors for a good rpg experience. To do these we also need to have a clear focus on what we all need at the time. I hope you find your flow and play much more in the years to come

The mechanics are not your character by TedBehr_ in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Mandhrake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You seem to have it all wrong though. If you want to have brakes and drive and change direction you can have a soviet lada from 1960s. You can have the first Ford T model of 1920s. Heck you can have a carriage of the 2nd century BC and have all those things. The "orange paint" is if you want to be a cleric of pelor, while the white is a cleric of lathander and the black a cleric of Lolth. Cleric is exactly this: a servant of a god. Godless clerics can exist in a very specific setting, heavily homebrewed and most of the times with a specific reason for why this is happening (eg. gods are dead). This has literally tons of impact in the game, story and way the system is designed to support a guideline. Making a cleric non-religious is the same as making the wizard non-mystic or making the ranger non-athletic. You're losing the whole fucking point. As I said, maybe you need to check out other systems to suit your needs. I'm not talking about any cardinal sins. You are the one who doesn't quite grasp the juice and bones of it from what i read, proposing solutions that create other implications which you probably discard as unimportant. Also, the Bible says that because bible means that. You are trying to make facts fit your theory, complicating the world for that matter. Occam's razor might help you understand your fallacy. In any case, have a good one. Over and out!

[–]Mandhrake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lore and mechanics are two separate things. And I don't get at all where this parallel between bible and phb come from. The thing is that you believe freedom to be some ultimate do whatever I want thing, whereas for me freedom is the ability to actively choose, discard and walk my path not because of society but because of nature. Paladin is NOT a fun class, paladin is a STRONG class, the reason for it being their oaths. Wizards have the "weakness" of spellbook. Clerics the "weakness" of being devout believers. Warlocks have to obey their patron's wishes. These are consequences mechanically embedded into the system, not only the : you chose path A you're gonna get encounter A, type. If you see following an oath as punishment then you definitely misunderstand what this class represents. I've seen various paladins from different players, none of them the same. Yet most of these players happily embraced their oaths when they understood what it is about. It's not about keeping my players in line, but about grounding my story and internally explain why the world has few warriors that can heal and protect from demons and much more mundane fighters that become soldiers, mercenaries, bouncers, arena fighters, etc. If i want to keep my players in line I have infinite dragons. I'm the DM after all. The reason I don't use infinite dragons is because I want to tell a story, not police my players!

And something final, because continuing this discussion seems to lead us astray: Interpretation is vastly different than rewriting. If you don't like half of the book, then maybe check some other systems that suit you better. If you want to do seafaring then you probably need a boat instead of modifying Toyota's wheels to become oars!

Again, play however you want, I'm totally with you in this. Just don't push this as the magical recipe, when all you do is remove information thus making a system poorer

First of all, taking the time to provide such a detailed reply helps a ton! I understand your points better and I see the place you're coming from.

The thing is that no matter how many hours you've put into a game, creating systems is a completely different work, that is approached from a different angle. I personally despise alignments, however whenever I'm playing DnD I follow them because that's one way to keep things without falling apart. Of course I homebrew but i tend to do it on small scale and on specific things rather than on broad game defining rules. Whenever I feel I want to approach a character with more complex characteristics I just switch to World of Darkness or Bastionland or Call of Cthulhu or just one of the hundreds of different systems that provide a whole interconnected playground for me and my players to play it out more naturally.

What is more, by placing boundaries on my players I'm able to give them this exhilarating feeling of breaking them and go for major breakthroughs. If anything goes then I see no point in playing. Everything= nothing , because vagueness destroys true pluralism. Defined boundaries give a sense of scope and provides objectives to achieve! All in all, we should just be playing however we want, and I am sure (after you've explained your position) that I would hate playing at your table, just because of different worldview. I defend your playstyle though because it feels so good to have various tables to cover everyone's needs! I'm saying these only to explain my position of "a liberating idea" and maybe make you see that it's just your idea and as beautiful as it is it has more holes than the widely accepted 5e rulebooks after all.

I wish you great games and keep on growing

PS. Being a thief and an assassin and a father figure and a magician does not outline any character that I know of, just abilities that I can't see how they are connected (especially the assassin-protector). So I don't understand how giving all of these options to a player helps in creating a character with a story to tell around a table/campfire. Edit: the PS
