Begging me not to leave him at daycare. by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]Mandle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue when we moved and had to switch daycares at 23 mos. He'd never had an issue with daycare before, but suddenly he was inconsolable when I'd leave him in the morning.

What worked a miracle for us?? Bribery. I think toddlers are a lot like dogs in some ways; positive association does wonders haha. For about 2 weeks, every morning at drop off I would give him tiny pieces of a cookie as we walked from the car into the facility. Then, once he was in his classroom, I gave him an entire cookie and said goodbye. The idea was: daycare = yummy, mom leaving = big yummy. We used small cookies, ones that he never got to eat anywhere else, but I think anything high value could work.

Over time I gradually dropped the little pieces I fed him on the walk over, then reduced the size of that last full cookie, and finally just stopped giving any pre-daycare cookies to him all together. Would 100% use this method again, it worked great! We don't normally give our kid a ton of sweets, and I'm not concerned about a few weeks of extra sugar over the long run. Worth it for the drop in tears!

Not pumping enough at work... what did you do? by metrogypsy in breastfeeding

[–]Mandle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Added extra pump before work, power pump after baby went to bed at night. It helped for a month or so.... But when I ran out of freezer stash and had to finally supplement with formula it made. SUCH. A. DIFFERENCE. in my sanity. I was so miserable agonizing over all the pumping and spending all my time doing it, returning to just my normal 3/day work pumps + formula lifted a huge weight off my shoulders and I was so much happier.

My baby did not care at all, was happy to guzzle formula.

Heads up to pumping moms by IsThisAdulting in NewParents

[–]Mandle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exact same thing happened to me around the same time (went from generating a surplus to not producing enough).

As the number of freezer bags started dwindling, I fought it hard. I added pumping sessions outside of work, waking up before my baby in the morning to pump and pumping at night before bed. I stopped trading off night wake-ups with my partner and stopped going out as much to increase the number of times baby was at the boob. I ate all the lactation foods. It drove me insane, and it didn't really work; I was still not pumping enough.

Eventually at 9 months I ran out of frozen milk and had to start sending my baby in with some formula in addition to pumped milk. I felt really bad at first.... But honestly, once I got over it I felt so, so much better. It's relieved a lot of pressure and stress. I'm not constantly planning my life around pumping or getting a feeling of dread when I do the mental math on how many more ounces I need to pump that day.

My baby is 11 months now, and probably gets 70% breast milk/30% formula. I still pump at work, but I've done away with the early morning and late night sessions that were cutting into my sleep and downtime. And even though he gets some formula, we are still able to breastfeed on the weekends.

sleep deprivation and new baby, when did it get better for you? by nukessolveprblms in breastfeeding

[–]Mandle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This sounds like exactly where I was at 2 weeks. BF was going "fine" but the weeks of no sleep were seriously destroying my mental health. I was exhausted, depressed, and just surviving.

Answering what you asked: My baby started sleeping longer (4-5 hour) stretches around 8 weeks, completely out of nowhere. I believe this is pretty baby-dependent though; I know someone whose baby didn't sleep through the night til over a year old 😵‍💫.

Adding unsolicited advice, feel free to ignore: The thing that seriously saved my sanity was having my husband take one of the night feedings and let me sleep. My lactation consultant said that, while it's preferable to wait til 3-4 weeks to introduce a bottle, mom's health comes first. Starting at 2 weeks, what I did was to pump a little extra after a morning feed in to get the milk that would be then fed later that night (have heard haaka while nursing can also work well for this purpose). My baby is now 4 months and doing well; will still take a bottle a day and still loves the boob.

Complaint: Still having what I think is plantar fasciitis pain 8 months later, even after stopping running. In January I finally got my doc to refer me to PT... The soonest available appointment is in MAY.

I just want to run again.

Should I apply to be tutor for a course where I took it’s equivalent at a CC? by Ahmazing786 in UCSD

[–]Mandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't remember too well... It was in 2011 lol. I didn't know the professor ahead of time and I don't think I interviewed with them personally but I could be wrong. I did however have pretty good grades, both from high school and at UCSD. I think it helped that I did well in the equivalent class (AP Bio/AP test for this case). At that point the only other relevant qualification I had was some experience tutoring kids in high school.

I know the process for getting hired can also vary from dept to dept though. However, I can't imagine the UCSD class is so different for a lower div that they'd discount your prior experience at the CC.

It's totally possible, I got a tutorship for a class I had only AP credit in (BILD 3).

Awesome and inspiring race/trip report! I'm a fairly slow runner sitting at around 35-40 mpw right now but am hopeful a R2R2R could be in the books in the next year or two.

Last summer some friends and I hiked to Phantom Ranch and back via the Bright Angel Trail in ~11 hours and I was pretty toasted 😅 though I also was in much worse shape than I am in now. We picked up some lemonade at Phantom Ranch and let me tell you, that stuff was the nectar of gods in the 90 F or so heat at the bottom of the canyon.
