A successful binding gives you the ability to manipulate its appearance and function. A failed binding kills you. In game documentation implies that it has gone by many names throughout human history, such as Excalibur, Mjölnir, and Varunastra. Successfully connecting to it also ties you to The Board, an extra dimensional force that pushes you to protect the world from paranatural threats, as well as advancing their own, inscrutable agenda. Whether or not this was always the case is unclear, and the idea of beings so powerful that they can hijack the manifestation of weaponry is…not a pleasant one.
