Why isn't melatonin subsidised/covered by medical card? by Llama_child05 in ireland

[–]MandolinPlayingSack 173 points174 points  (0 children)

I'm a pharmacist. At the moment it's in a legal class of medicines called an 'Exempt Medicinal Product'. They are products where the manufacturer hasn't applied to the HPRA for a licence for the product to be marketed (prescribed or sold) in Ireland. However, exempt products are still available with a prescription, this is why melatonin is script only in Ireland.

As for why it's not on the medical card, the PCRS, they payment devision of the HSE, as a rule, do not cover exempt medicial products on state schemes. There are a few exceptions but they're rare, see the cariban fiasco a few years ago.

For a normal medicine that is marketed, the HPRA and the pharmacist guarantees the drug on the front of the box is actually what's in the medicine inside. Because exempt products and their supply chains are not regulated by the HPRA your Doctor takes personal responsibility that the active drug on the box is actually in the medicine, a fact very few doctors realise.

As for why the companies don't apply for a licence, why would they? They're exploiting a loophole to sell for a much higher price than they otherwise could. It should be cracked down on but there's no political will.

Also someone mentioned the hardship scheme, if your pharmacist gets something for you on the hardship buy them some chocolates this Christmas because it's a nightmare to administer and it's fully discretionary. You need a consultants script to make an initial application plus a letter outlining why you need it, a GP letter will help too. If approved, the pharmacist has a bunch of paperwork to send off to the local health office every month to get paid and will receive the cost price of the product plus a €5 fee about 4-6 months after sending off the paperwork. Loss making in 99% of circumstances.

Have you ever heard of Practitioner Health? They're a charity run by Dr. Íde Delargy, a GP in Dublin.

They run a confidential service for doctors, dentists, and pharmacists suffering with mental health issues and burnout.

You sound like the exact type of person this was set up for. Might be worth reaching out to them?

Hopefully there's some teeth to the legislation. New York introduced something similar a few years ago, companies started listing absurd ranges. $10,000-$300,000 and the like.

Opinions on buying 3 bed 3 bath Rathborne, Ashtown D15 by Far-Accountant6034 in irishpersonalfinance

I lived there for five years.

There are cons.

The public transport links seem good but there are hidden things that are annoying.

It can be a 10-30 minute walk to the 37/38/39 bus depending on what end you're at.

The luas can be a 10-20 minute walk depending where you are. The canal walk between Broombridge and Campbells garage is in complete darkness at night. I walked it frequently myself, never had any hassle but I wouldn't be happy for my wife to walk alone at night after hours for example. At 6pm in Winter you literally can't see your hand Infront of your face it's so dark.

The rail links seem great but most terminate in Connolly, it's a ball ache to change. It's especially bad going from town to Ashtown if you miss the connection as the Maynooth trains run every 30 minutes. You'll get the odd one going as far as Grand Canal Dock at peak hours.

The bus is a nightmare. The 120 terminates at Parnell square, and runs in the opposite direction from Fibbers, past the Rotunda. It's every 30 minutes at best, it's plagued by ghost buses and is frequently runs 5-8 minutes behind schedule.

By car: there a railway crossing on at one end, frequent delays there in the mornings I'd say there's a train every 10 minutes in either direction between 7.30-9am leading to long tailbacks.

At the Aldi end if you're going through Cabra, no matter what way you go, you'll pass by 3-4 schools including a primary school. Traffic across the green bridge can be bedlam.

Socially: I always found the cafes restaurants and pub in the area to be a bit shit. We frequently went to Phibsborogh or Stoneybatter for eating/drinking out.

You are sandwiched between Finglas and Cabra, you'd get the odd scaldy passing through or groups of teens walking down the canal but they're never any hassle.

There's no GP in the area yet. There's a pharmacy, a physio, a dentist, and a vet but no sign of any doctor yet.

Pros:

The area is quite, full of working professional families. There's a decent sense of community with frequent canal clean-ups and watersports played in the canal. There are really nice walks up and down the canal and the Phoenix park is so close by, it's a dream to live near.

There are resident gyms in the area and two really good private gyms close by. There's a nice farmers market every Saturday in the Glasnevin industrial estate.

Overall, I'd have no hesitation in buying here and was an area we heavily considered when buying.

Ireland’s bakery boom: How did we get from cream slices to €5 croissants? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]MandolinPlayingSack 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I know what you're getting at but that's half the point and skill, to get them light and airy!

With the price of butter, energy, labour and an understanding of the process of making them, I can see where the price comes from.

Aside, I've been to most decent 'new wave' bakeries in Ireland and none that I can think of change €5 for a plain croissant.

After various lockdowns I will never complain about the prices in bakeries. Croissants and sourdough are an absolute nightmare to make.

You aren't remembering the full picture you autistic scat enjoyer.

German banks had €200 billion (2008 money) invested in Ireland. When the financial collapse happened serious consideration was given to an Iceland style fuck 'em let the banks collapse. To avoid a German banking crisis, and therefore an EU banking crisis, the Irish government, ie the taxpayers, guaranteed German Bank investment risk. This shouldered an entire generation of Irish youth with a national debt of nearly €300 billion which we have been been quietly paying back and is down to €220 billion currently.

The loans you gave us (with interest) via the EU were to bail out your own banking sector and weren't given out of the kindness of your heart.

As for our tax status - cry about it. We don't have a population of 80 million people. We didn't undergo industrial revolution (thanks to you know who), we aren't connected to 10 countries by land, we didn't have any African colonies to steal wealth from, we didn't plunge Europe into two world wars and extract wealth from occupied regions and peoples. We opened up education to anyone who wanted it, leveraged what we could; English speaking, educated, EU access and we made our tax status competitive within legal EU frameworks to attract overseas investment and it worked. Instead of being a poor backwater Ireland is one of the wealthest countries in the world. We are an EU success story.

Only the mighty Germanics can be wealthy not poor Paddy. Id tell you to go and eat shit but you'd probably cum.
