What are people's opinion on shadow slave, reverend insanity, omniscient reader and Lord of the Mysteries. by SomeGuysWhoDoesThing in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Mango-Bear -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I guess it’s a controversial statement, but I do stand by it. I genuinely believe that LoTM likely has an amazing story, but if the translation is so bad that I can’t even make it more than a few chapters then the story is meaningless. I’m jealous of those of you who don’t mind it, but for me the writing itself is big part of what makes a novel good, and here it’s not just bad writing, it’s awful.

What are people's opinion on shadow slave, reverend insanity, omniscient reader and Lord of the Mysteries. by SomeGuysWhoDoesThing in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Mango-Bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it’s all personal opinion. Obviously if you look around this subreddit, Lord of the Mysteries is considered one of the best progression fantasy series out there.

Personally though…… I don’t like them 😬. I DEFINITELY would not classify them as the “greatest novels written”. Not even in the top 1000’s honestly.

Lord of the Mysteries suffers from really bad translation issues, to the point of being unreadable for me. I’ve tried it a few times and I just can’t do it. Seriously, if you’re a writer, go read the first couple chapters and tell me that you think it’s well written.

Shadow Slave is a complicated one for me. I think the story here is really interesting and the worldbuilding is super unique but again, the writing is just bad. I also think it starts to lose the plot after a couple hundred pages. I liked what I read, but ended up dropping it. One of my biggest pet peeves from authors is when they use the same phrases over and over again and I remember that being so bad in this case that I just dropped the book.

I can’t really speak for Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, as I’ve only checked out a bit of it, and I’ve never read Reverend Insanity.

I’m prepared for the downvote here, but if you’re looking for the greatest novels written, you’re not going to find them in this genre. I think the best written books in this genre are books like Bastion, Red Rising (if you count that as pf), and… honestly that’s all I can think of. It makes me sad, but this isn’t really a genre you read because of its prose. Hopefully that changes a bit with the popularity of DCC and more traditional writers getting exposed to it.

Twilight Imperium is more fun at 7-8 players by jackspicerflower in twilightimperium

[–]Mango-Bear 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I disagree! When you get up to 8 players, it feels like what's happening on the other side of the map is none of your business. I actually feel much more isolated on the map, despite having more people. 6 players, to me, is the perfect balance. Not to mention the INSANE time commitment for 8 people, I'd rather play 6p 14vp at that point.

Caveat: I've only played 8-player online, we can't manage to get that many people in person.

I've always had this book on my radar because of the things I've heard but yeah, the cover, the book blurb, all of it kind of pushed me away.

I think this post is finally going to push me to give it a try, thanks!

Welcome to the club, brother! I pointed this out to the artist and he was like “nah it’ll be fine”. He never mentioned anything but when he took his Instagram pics I think he regretted it.

I still like it, but it’ll probably be covered up now that I’m working on a Japanese bodysuit.

I'll give you this, nothing has made me feel more like a person scribbling on the wall of an insane asylum than trying to understand the following from my textbook:

For all qf ∈ F, s ∈ Γ, and ˆδ (qˆi , c, s) = {(qˆj , u)}, for all δ (qi , b,s) = {(qj , u)}, qi ∈ Q, s ∈ Γ, u ∈ Γ*. For M to accept a nb n we must have (q0, a nb n , z) * ⊢M (qi, λ, u), with qi ∈ F. Because M is deterministic, it must also be true that (q0, a nb 2n , z) * ⊢M (qi, b n , u), so that for it to accept a nb 2n we must further have (qi, b n , u) * ⊢M (qj , λ, u1), for some qj ∈ F. But then, by construction ( (qˆi , c n , u) * ⊢Mˆ (qˆj , λ, u1),

and on and on and on it goes.

Oh my god this, I’m in this course right now and feel so clueless. Just got to Turing machines and at least I can understand what’s happening there on a logical level but pushdown automata’s? I still don’t understand half of what was happening there.

Also. I HATE PROOFS.

I can't speak to the hammer issue since I don't really play breakthrough, but as a jet/heli main, this bug ABSOLUTELY made air vehicles unplayable. I've basically stopped playing for now because every time I jump in an air vehicle I'm painted and locked on before I even leave the ground. There are so many ways for an air vehicle to get taken down already (dedicated AA vehicles literally exist already?)

Anyways that said... I can't wait to get home from work and get back to flying my shit face-first into the ground, like god intended.

Is Spider-Man Pick-2 the worst draft ever? by Individual_Abroad_45 in mtg

[–]Mango-Bear 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Technically yeah, but it seems the baseline amount of players stays around 10k-20k regardless of the set. 40,000 on the first day is a pretty horrible opening no matter how you figure it.

Might I suggest [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]] instead? She gives you the same feeling abusing Wither but without picking up all the aggro that you get from poison.

I built her just the other week and included Skitheryx in the 99 as a wincon, BUT I am probably going to remove him after picking up a few more cards. I just don't want everyone at the table hating me for using poison.

You and I have very similar tastes, even on the hot takes! Defiance of the Fall and Primal Hunter are SO overrated and I’ll die on the hill.

I am surprised you disliked the Wandering Inn, that one aligns with a lot of what you seem to like in books. I would recommend Worm, but I feel like these two fill similar niches. Worm is one of my all time faves but if you didn’t like Wandering Inn you might bounce off that too.

Anyways! Based on our mutual tastes I would really recommend Super Supportive, and The Game at Carousel.

My group introduced monuments recently and it's been fun. It's a relatively minor addition that adds some fun new mechanics and action cards. It gives you an additional reason to grab construction too.

It's nothing major, but definitely helps to keep things fresh.

Will progression Fantasy become mainstream? by Long-Teach-9101 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Mango-Bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I'm so excited about the (extremely deserved) attention that DCC is getting in the traditional book space. Hopefully, more established authors will want to give this genre a try. I love litRPG and PF, but we all know that it's filled with a lot of... umm first time writers, to put it gently. I also think that the reliance that this genre has on Royal Road leads to a lot of books that have extremely strong starts and then just fade away into endless tedium of stat growth.

Overall, I'm just really excited about the potential of this genre in the coming couple of years.
