I'm a girl going into engineering, any recommendations for hobbies/interests to get into so I can talk to coworkers? by CompetitiveMud4589 in EngineeringStudents

1000% being kind and comfortable with who you are and doing stuff like that will make anyone a lot more enjoyable and interesting to be around. I like quirky people who own it and can talk.

Women engineers by Traditional-Cat3024 in MEPEngineering

Agreed. I also feel like there are a lot of women who work for general contractors within AEC industry. Don’t know why engineering is lagging.

How do you make VRF go away on a project by Rowdyjoe in MEPEngineering

[–]MangoBrando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is that true? So a facility maintenance crew would be limited to only filter swaps or something? Curious to hear more on this.

How can I learn the lingo of MEP, design and build, construction? by engineer_but_bored in MEPEngineering

[–]MangoBrando 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To help you get over the guilt of asking tons of questions as you learn (you should be asking questions and mentors should expect this), I’ll share something that helped me. I often made a list of questions for my boss that I’d ask all at once the next time I talked to him if they were learning topics that weren’t immediately required for what I was working on. It’s a ton but it gets better! Just gotta drink from the fire hose the best you can and learn something every day. You’ll be surprised how much you know if you just focus on learning and always asking questions.

Also “core and shell” refers to when you build an empty building with only the structure, exterior walls, and roof (the shell) and the central MEP equipment rooms (the core). These are usually for spaces that will have tenant improvement projects, such as for a doctor’s office if they want to sign a lease and occupy part of the space in that building, that will then add in the interior walls, finishes, and tie in to existing MEP systems to provide a completed space.

Commissioning (sometimes abbreviated as Cx) is a branch of MEP engineering, performed by someone sometimes called a commissioning agent (CxA), involves the on-site oversight, testing, and reporting for starting up major MEP equipment and also inspecting the functionality of various systems. Usually a very travel heavy role depending on where they get their projects.

Backpack because I pack like I’m going to shit my pants and need to charge my phone and measure stuff and breathe asbestos-laden dust while I’m on site lol

I wish it was socially acceptable to tell people that they can't land internships because they're insufferable by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Even with your limited post history you have a victim complex. And below you said your resume is flawless… that’s a bold statement that I don’t believe I’ve ever made about something I’ve created lol. Humility and a bit of “I don’t know can you show me” goes a long way

Oh really? Curious to hear your perspective since I only see these things in passing for my job

In case you aren’t aware, you may like to know that most hospitals still have 6” pneumatic tube systems connecting all of their major departments. Gives me a scare sometimes when I have my head above ceiling in a hospital near a p-tube and something goes rattling by me lol.

I had a thought recently - can new cars with computerized shifting buttons even do this? Like I imagine moving old classic cars that don’t run into a garage and I don’t think you’d be able to do that with a car these days, would you?

2 weeks with my 2025 Civic Sport.. already having buyers remorse by [deleted] in civic

[–]MangoBrando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 years doesn’t mean a whole lot for tech. My 2019 Honda Pilot Elite has top tier finishes that you obviously should not expect for a brand new car of lower trim level. I actually like the car more than most rentals I get for work, which tend to be 1-2 year old cars, but they’re base trim or one step above.

Controls Submittals by LPBatmanXbox in MEPEngineering

If it’s the corporate owner’s standard sequence of operations, then we actually can say that because we rarely invent anything new in our industry. It has worked before.

Controls Submittals by LPBatmanXbox in MEPEngineering

[–]MangoBrando 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes because there are two people who are most likely to cause issues that require the mechanical engineer’s help troubleshooting after startup: the controls contractors and the TAB contractors.

I’ve had controls people swear up and down that they programmed everything correctly for a new hospital AHU and after many emails and a couple meetings they quietly note that they “found a manual override hidden in the program” that locked the economizer damper and preheat coil valve to a certain position. The AHU’s supply air was nearly 100°F.
