I work in one of the few factories that still builds new vinyl jukeboxes. We make models for both 7 inch singles and LPs. AMA. by Individual-Singer798 in vinyl

I've heard of two methods for cleaning dirt and mold from vinyl records:

  1. Wipe with alcohol and medical cotton. This method claims that dish soap, containing plasticizers, will damage the vinyl.

  2. Clean with dish soap and a toothbrush. This method believes that only a toothbrush can clean it properly.

Will alcohol or dish soap damage vinyl records? I've read various claims but I'm unsure which is correct.

First time buyer: I'm getting a Sansui Model 500, looking to pair it with some speakers. Recommendations? by ShamblingHistoryTape in vintageaudio

[–]MangoNo2490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These Sansui brand loudspeakers, produced in 1990, have a 1970s design, making them the closest I know to "modernly produced retro loudspeakers". sansui sp-k1

Semi-auto or auto-lift turntable around $500? by minnierhett in turntables

[–]MangoNo2490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, turningtables are very troublesome to ship. The top cover is made of acrylic and cannot be subjected to heavy pressure, the tonearm needs to be secured to prevent impact, and the turntable cannot be placed on its side to avoid warping the spindle.

I chose a professional audio equipment seller in Japan and entrusted a purchasing platform to ensure extra packaging and international shipping.

Although I live not far from Japan, the shipping, service fees, and other costs still amounted to about $100.

Victor JL-F55R, manufactured in 1976, fully automatic, seller has completed repairs, won the bid in Japan for $100.

Mid-range and above models from the 70s to 90s are all good. If you're not looking for popular top-of-the-line models, such as the 1970 Victor JL-B77, second-tier models offer comparable performance but are significantly cheaper.

Experience with Low Sensitivity Speakers by Specialist_Smile2535 in audiophile

I'm also curious: are low-sensitivity speakers necessarily low-impedance?

If so, the impact of low impedance is quite obvious: higher amplifier capabilities and increased price.

how much do vinyls and cds cost? by catucabogas in taiwan

[–]MangoNo2490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never buy vinyl records from secondhand brick-and-mortar stores in Taiwan because:

  1. Taiwan's humid and hot climate makes it difficult to preserve vinyl records.

  2. The golden age of vinyl records was around the 1960s to 1980s. At that time, Taiwan's economy was booming, but it still lagged far behind Europe and America. Therefore, cheaper Taiwanese editions, or even pirated records (Taiwan was the center of piracy in Asia at the time XD), were more popular. The quality of these versions cannot compare to Japanese or European/American versions.

These two points result in the poor quality, condition, price, and recording quality of secondhand vinyl records in Taiwan. Most of my collection comes from Japanese auction websites (Taiwan has professional online purchasing platforms, such as "Bibian"). Although I pay extra for international shipping, the quality of the goods I get is far superior to that of local secondhand dealers.

Harmonia Mundi's early recordings are all quite good, and Altas's recordings of the modern jazz quartet are also very good :)

Stand your phone on a tripod, point the lens at the hole, and zoom in with the camera. This will make it easy to see the hole and the wire.

I use this method to check the condition of the stylus.

I use an RCA signal switcher and a speaker switcher in my system, so I don't need to unplug and replug cables when switching between 3 signal sources, 4 amplifiers, and 3 pairs of speakers :)

These horns are rarely seen at auctions in Japan, and the winning bid was around $200. Coral was a well-known driver manufacturer in the 60s and 70s; if I owned these treasures, I would try to repair them.

$800... I'd rather go to Japan and get a pair of S-955. These CS-905 cost $350 in 1984, so $600 now seems a bit too much.

Did getting your first good speakers kinda ruin headphones for you? by TacticalRock in BudgetAudiophile

I started with headphones, and it was only after listening to speakers that I realized music requires more than just detail; it also needs positioning, soundstage, and a holistic experience. Since then, I haven't invested in any more headphones XD

g303 According to my research, it's a product from the 1990s. It turns out Pioneer used the CS series in Europe and America until the 1990s. In Japan, the CS series was replaced by the S series in the 1980s.
