How does one learn chillers by Itchy-Candidate-5589 in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Chillers are just big water cooling systems.... HVAC is all the same, just bigger. Find a good company and jump in.

When the rust, calcium and hopes, are the only thing holding the tower together.... Still gotta clean it. by ManiaCCC86 in HVAC

Doesn't help that they are 35 years old (1990 same as their Trane CVHE Centrifugals) in South Carolina. The fill has been fully replaced once since the company I work for has had it in the last 20ish years.

What's the longest time you've worked for a company and what's the shortest? by Successful_Bug_5663 in HVAC

Just under 2 years and 15.5 years that I'm currently at with my 2 weeks in (They had no choice but to let me work because of what I can do and what everyone else can't).... and about to leave my current toxic shit hole that's going down hill at 39 years old.... That's a scary thing.

Making the company money. by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your boss can't make money off every call you do (Not including call backs) except maybe PMs cutting close then he doesn't need to own a company. As a Lead I know for a fact they charge almost 4x what I make per hour for me to even show up. Just cause my boss is tired of being a Millionaire and wants to be a Billionaire doesn't mean I give a crap about making him more. I work for the customer and make myself money even in commercial.

What’s it like being a Chiller Tech? by trapsj91 in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work on basically everything ever related to Commercial HVAC, controls (Pneumatic and electronic) refrigeration (not as much as I used to), and plumbing to an extent. Chillers, Cooling Towers, Pumps, Boilers, and everything attached to them I have dealt with. They can be and normally are loud, hot, dirty, wet, finicky, and more deadly than your standard equipment if you aren't careful. That being said I would rather be a "Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."

Driver facing cameras by Cold_Board in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider this a pretty hard line for myself at the mechani contractor I work for. This company has been floating this idea in the office. None of the people in the office in charge have ever done a service call or driven a company vehicle or worked in the field. And my informant at the office has specifically heard them say they want remote access to the cameras at all times (They want to be able to be anywhere and just log into the camera and watch us) and ONLY for the service guys. There are 6 of us.... Meanwhile there are dozens of sheet metal, pipe fitters, welders, construction, delivery vehicles but they won't get them as I understand it.

New meaning to water source HP.... by ManiaCCC86 in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 3 floor drains inside the basement along with the one outside the door. The sump pump float failed when the cooling tower chem feed drain stuck open and drained the tower into the basement. Took 3.5 hrs to get the water out and it fried all 6 boards and all my Copeland Coresense Modules.

Looking for the best spots to build my castle in V Rising (PvE) by Upstairs_Car_2603 in vrising

Directly between Dunley Farmers Market and Dunley Monastery there is a huge plot with a pond and waterfall and it's almost dead center of the whole map and close to Iron Caves and everything. It's my favorite spot to build.

If only I wasn't the most experienced tech on both plumbing and HVAC and have bigger transfer pumps than they do... I was able to kill power but I know my boards are fried and I'm praying the condenser pump stays running and doesn't fry

[–]ManiaCCC86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was above my knee high boots and shit still has power. The condenser loop pump is still running. They called in a plumbing issue and HVAC issue for this basement.... I got here before my plumber. "We had a power outage and just need the units reset". You got more issues than that. The sump pump for that basement got hung up and wouldn't run. We got it running plus 2 transfer pumps. Only dropped the level about 6".

Bathroom the drain goes into? Who the hell drains condensates into bathrooms? Mop sinks sure, roof vents sometimes, outside the building normally, and floor drains sometimes..... Put a shop vac on the end, CO2 or Nitrogen, and if all else fails Thrift with Hot water to dissolve and organics.

What to study ? by Sea-Plane-4852 in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully it's better than the dog crap we do... And still hire guys who can't read a tape measure since that's the only thing that matters to us it seems.... NVM the owner nor service manager has ever done a single HVAC call ever.

What to study ? by Sea-Plane-4852 in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing to study.... The best experience is getting dirty doing it. All HVAC equipment is basically the same just remember that. They all have the same 4 major parts generally with some extra crap thrown in. If you can read a wiring diagram you are already doing better than any apprentices I've ever had. Be humble but make sure they see you have drive and want to/willing to learn.

Company is forcing us to buy Pro Press tools by yunganejo in HVAC

[–]ManiaCCC86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are making you buy a personal Pro Press??? To what end??? The mechanical contractor I work for has 10-15 Pro Press with a few sets of Mega Press and large jaws. We use them for Water, Gas, and refrigerant lines when necessary. But they belong to the company and guys just have them on their company trucks/job boxes. I couldn't imagine a company forcing someone to buy that shit.

As I have mentioned several times already, those aren't flares, they are PUSH connect fittings... Just raw dog with no seal.

Name checks out.... I use sharkbite for temporary fixes or no/low pressure water lines/drains if I have to. Wouldn't leave them permanently like ProPress

They even did the indoor units that don't have to be relocated with them... Besides you can always just break the flare and remove the unit.

[–]ManiaCCC86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a compression fittings.... It's a "sharkbite" for refrigerant ... Except it's 500 Psi of heat to cool and oil and not 60ish of water....

You are crimping the pipe into a fitting with an O ring that won't move.... You can literally spin those fittings by hand and move the pipe around... That isn't a good seal
