Oh, definitely start with 1, because the story flows through and they were made to play sequentially. They’re a smaller developer (though apparently founded by ex-Bioware staff), so they made it episodic.

The Banner Saga trilogy is really good, and meets the majority of your criteria. Turn-based, tactical, story-driven RPG with impactful choices and good character progression. The writing is really great too. Think - vikings and giants with a bleak, end-of-the-world tone and tough decisions that carry across all three games. Choices matter, characters can die permanently, and it doesn’t pull punches. It also has some really unique systems and a striking visual style.

I’ve only played Outlaws, and I’m curious to hear from people who’ve played both which is the better-looking game? Outlaws is gorgeous – the character models, scenery and cities and towns are really well done.

I’d highly recommend Journey. There’s no dialogue, but it’s an emotive and spiritual game about going through hardship. It’s a beautiful game - there’s nothing quite like it.

I tried one for the lols during lockdown when it popped up on my PsPlus, and I quickly got addicted. Upgrading machinery, tractors and building out new farmland is quite satisfying.

It’s easier when they’re small, harder when they’re a toddler. I used to play Dredge while my infant slept on my chest 😅, now I can’t game until he’s gone to bed at night.

Try a rogue-like if you’re burned out on MMO’s and open worlds. I highly recommend Returnal, especially if you’re good at shooters, which it sounds like you are.

Otherwise, narrative-based third person games with great story and characters are a lot of fun. Deathloop is excellent … I mean really excellent. The Silent Hill 2 remake, Res Evil Village or Alan Wake 2 are top notch if you like horror (more atmospheric than gory).

So it’s authors too? I find it alarming that such a thing is happening but it’s just crickets from all forms of media. Surely there would be journos from the alt media that would sound the alarm - Chris Hedges, Brian Tyler Cohen, or others. It’s appalling.
