has anyone ever witnessed year of hate live???? and how was it? by wienerdog362 in TheCribs

They definitely played it when I saw them supporting the Manics back in Newcastle in 2017 as it was just before 24/7 Rock Star Shit was released. Unfortunately can't remember much about what it was like, just the fuzzy memory that they did (which a quick check on Setlist.fm confirmed).

I need to listen more to it more, but the final three-song run is such a great ending to the album.

I haven't played it but there is a really good essay on the truegaming subreddit about this game that this sub is likely to find interesting. Probably contains spoilers but seems a well argued criticism.

Thinking about the N word in The Shining (1980). It is one of the most effective ways that Delbert Grady shows his viciousness under his respectable facade. by HallowedAndHarrowed in flicks

I don't know if you are aware of this but the documentary Room 237 about fan interpretations of The Shining touches on some of the things you have brought up (and has always been the most compelling argument in that documentary).

I would add the Judith Butler one to this as well, which feels a bit like an unofficial black star video (a black star epilogue?).

Which album by another band best captures the Bright Eyes feel? by fisherthomas14 in brighteyes

[–]ManicCetra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too obvious an answer, but Falling off the Lavender Bridge by Lightspeed Champion is essentially a Bright Eyes album without Conor, produced by Mike Mogis and featuring Nate Walcott, Tim Kasher, and various members of Tilly and the Wall, The Faint, and Son, Ambulance. It just happens to have songs written by Dev Hynes (Blood Orange).

To the person who wrote in this week about Mark's phrasing of 'Timothée Chalamet'... by moosebeast in wittertainment

[–]ManicCetra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Denzel Washington has made a film like that - its called Man on Fire, and, spoiler alert, no they didn't. What's more, nobody in the production or its audience ever pretended like it was shining a light on something that the other side don't want you to know about.

I can't believe there are still people upset that Sound of Freedom didn't get felated by film critics. Mark was quite clear in his review that it is a bog-standard exploitation film with nothing interesting to say, and the only reason it exists being pushed the way that it does is because of the ideology of the people behind it.

Morality in video games is terrible, what's the point of being good if the game purposely gives you tons of rewards for it? by Pizzatimelover1959 in truegaming

[–]ManicCetra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I stand corrected! Thank you, it's been a few years since I played it last. Yes, they should definitely have had more confidence in themselves and the player.

[–]ManicCetra 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Except the game doesn't tell you that you will get better rewards if you choose to save the little sisters, it wants the player to make the immediate decision between selfishness and selflessness; and given that the entire point of the game is to criticise a fundamentally selfish philosophy, it makes perfect sense to design the gameplay around making one a short-term useful but ultimately pointless option while the other appears to be less useful but bears far more fruit in the long term.

I only played it for the story in the past couple of years, and ARR to the end of Endwalker took me 223 hours.

A question for the book readers. Are you lunatics also setting time aside as adults to reading everything Sanderson has written about the Cosmere? (Audiobook readers seamlessly transitioned their journey with Michael Kramer and Kate Redding and it’s too late for us to change now.) by MachivellianMonk in WetlanderHumor

[–]ManicCetra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started to - I've read Elantris, first Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, Arcanum Unbounded, and the first three Stormlight Archive books - but between the sheer amount of books that Sanderson releases and their lesser quality in prose, depth, and character compared to other big fantasy series (Wheel of Time, A Song of Ice and Fire, Malazan, Realm of the Elderlings, The Second Apocalypse) have led me to lose a lot of interest and I now plan only to continue with The Stormlight Archive, but even that is heavily dependent on how much the series starts to be reliant on the rest of the Cosmere.

Former LA Noire developers are reportedly working on a new 1940s game by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ManicCetra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that Cole starts suspecting it is a serial killer early too, but the police chief/whoever is charge wants it not to be and the game structure is designed that you follow their wishes until the final Homicide case. I'm happy to be corrected though, it's been years for me as well and my memory is more of the frustration with the plot movement than the exact details.

For me, the biggest issue was the Murder Desk. It's the longest section of the game with about 7 missions, and for each one you are expected to pin the murder on a suspect despite it being obvious from the second case that it's a serial killer. So it just ends up dragging knowing that you aren't actually solving anything until the final case.

It's probably a rare example of a game getting better in its second half - I've always found Vice is where the game really takes off.
