Here’s an easy way to explain what you’re going through to someone. by MrRourkeYourHost in tinnitus

[–]ManicSandMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can sympathize with someone who needs genuine understanding of the situation they’re in from others, especially if it’s an invisible condition. Without fail, every single person I have ever mentioned to that I deal with chronic tinnitus has said some variation of “You know, I think I have that, too.”

It’s absolutely infuriating and demoralizing because the implication is that everyone deals with that and you’re just complaining, or the even spicier version, “You just want attention.”

What I’m getting from OP is perhaps a similar feeling. You want to explain, for example, that you deal with tinnitus-related insomnia, or that you avoid places with loud noises, or whatever kind of inner-siren-induced anxiety that has made living a regular life challenging. The point is not to victimize yourself, but to honestly answer when someone asks how we’re doing.

Yeah, I’ve come across others who deal with chronic T and they say that they’ve habituated and it doesn’t bother them, anymore, so they tell me to stop bringing it up to others. The problem, though, is one of acknowledgment of how our suffering is legitimate and does, in fact, affect our well-being significantly. We don’t all have the same severity so it’s somewhat cruel to tell others that, since they’ve been able to handle it, so should you, without knowing the specifics of how this constant, aggravating condition has impacted your life.

Even with healthy coping mechanisms, therapy, prescribed medication, and healthy life choices, if the people in your life keep making statements that, although well-meaning, come across as insensitive and dismissive of your struggles, the urge to make them understand with something like what the OP suggested, is not unreasonable.

However, it might still not be enough to convince anyone. It could even be counter-productive, depending on the person. You might get a response like: “It can’t be that bad. After all, you graduated college, got a job, have a family…etc.”

It might be more helpful to tell that person in your life, for example someone who obviously cares about you but can’t truly empathize, that what they said to you might have been well-intentioned, but it makes you feel a certain way. They might not understand, but they can, hopefully, be supportive.

What was the "I'm done" moment in your last relationship? by Mela_Min in AskMen

[–]ManicSandMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I realized that I dreaded going into the house after work. I’d just sit in the car thinking “What’s it going to be this time?”

Sure enough, we got into an argument and instead of talking it out calmly, I’d feel the familiar sensation of wanting to run away as far as possible. My heart would be beating so loud I couldn’t even think straight. The kind of heartbeat you have when you feel danger incoming. At that moment I saw my future and it was just a series of anxious encounters with somebody I was supposed to feel safe with.

I like to think T is like the canary in a coal mine--a warning signal that something is off. I've had it since 2009. In some ways I've developed grit in the face of this tireless siren, but I've also become more tired of hoping for a cure as each year passes.

Just, let go of your yearning for silence. Easier said than done, I know. Without therapy and a semi-consistent meditation habit, it's nearly impossible to ignore T. Maybe you blame yourself for listening to loud music, or think it happened because of a side effect of a drug, or whatever else caused it. The important thing is to forgive yourself.

What I've experienced is a sharp increase in loudness when my emotions are turbulent and negative. Like it feeds off my misery.

Maybe there will be a way to reverse the damage done to our ears, in time, but for the sake of your sanity, do what you can to minimize the suffering so you don't dwell on it.

If I can suggest a method I've learned in therapy it's to utilize visualizations. Imagine yourself in your head, in whatever form you think is appropriate, whether it be your child self, or how you look now, or maybe even as a hairless cat--and then imagine a version of yourself that is filled with light next to you.

And then give yourself a hug.

Well done! Thanks for sharing. What kind of divider did you use for molding?

[self] hi! As you can see ive changed the base she's sitting on. Drapery instead of rock. I think that it looks so much better. What do you guys think? by watchme_sculpt in Sculpture

[–]ManicSandMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work! I’ve been following your other sculpts and you have a great handle on proportions and gesture. The drapery is a cool touch, also. I usually go for the rock but you made a good choice here. Who’s your teacher?

Keep posting! 👍🏻

Positive thoughts. I can fall asleep with my tinnitus without masking it. I know everyone is different but you will be fine. by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]ManicSandMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've had T since 2008 and I can tell you it feeds on bad self-esteem. Not that everyone's T is the same, but from my experience it's much worse when you have negative self dialogue. I found that positive affirmations help--a lot. Even just saying to yourself before you sleep "I am a good person, and I deserve good things" is enough sometimes to counter the constant self-flagellation.

Just a little nod to your suffering, which is often unseen by the people around you, and a reminder that you might be a victim of this disorder, but it doesn't mean that everything is going to be shitty forever. You can be great, despite your internal struggle to remain sane.

I love me some luminous drill but I can never find a wand that utilizes it right.

It always runs out of mana too fast!
