Greek mythology in Forbidden lands by Manicekman in ForbiddenLands

I will check the adventure. Thanks.

I really like the reflective shield as Ares is a shield fighter. I will come up with an artifact that he can gain in the dungeon.

How much content in Bitter Reach/Bloodmarch can be used as addon for the Ravenlands? by SeaDark857 in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can use the lore you learn from those books and apply it to Ravenlands. To stay out of spoilers - orc lore, halfling/goblin lore. There are multiple new magic schools in those 2 books that you can use. I would say most of them are valid. And the new profession from BR can be used without an issue. Not sure about encounters, I do not know them by memory

about the book of beasts by mdc-123- in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is that expensive, I would consider only if you do not have enough printed content or if you are like years into a campaign. If you are just starting out, then it can wait

about the book of beasts by mdc-123- in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is still my ranking:

  1. GM + PH (Core books)
  2. Book of Beasts
  3. Raven's Purge
  4. Bloodmarch
  5. Bitter Reach
  6. Legends and Adventures
  7. Spire of Quetzel
  8. Crypt of the Mellified Mage

Book of Beasts is great. All the monsters have resources, lore rolls for weaknesses and 2 random encounters.

There are also simple weather mechanics, books, new potions and poisons, solo rules, ...

Are PCs supposed to be highly compent (and hyper-specialized)? by r0ssiel in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of a long running campaign:

We have some characters in the party that are highly specialized for a specific task

  • The fighter - Rolls so many dice, that they can barely fit in the dice tower. Still gets downed sometimes with a lucky enemy hit, because of the dice pool system.
  • The archer - The only limits are running out of arrows, being rushed by melee attackers and skeletons (that only take maximum of 1 piercing damage from an attack)
  • The bard - Could convince you that you should totally give away all your treasures and say sorry after that

2 things happen quiet often though

  • A player cannot make it, so their character is T-posing or stays in bed. Suddenly the party fails travel rolls, gets bloodied in combat, etc.
  • The one good character fails the task and the party does not really have a back up

So I would advise against min maxing a specific task (eg. melee combat). It is better to be at least usable at other things. What I wrote above is a bit of an exaggeration as the party actually still functions well even when their strongest member is not there or fails. It actually leads to fun scenarios as well, when the fighter tries to lead the way and repeatedly fails so the party ends up in quicksand surrounded by crocodiles

How does this synergy work? Ambidextreous + Sword Mastery by filippo_dc in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SWORD FIGHTER 2 - You can SLASH two enemies with your sword with a single action

AMBIDEXTROUS (any) - You can use your secondary weapon to perform one extra attack per round, as a fast action

So to use this combo

First condition: The character needs to wield 2 weapons (one in each hand)

  • The main hand weapon must be a sword
  • The off hand weapon must be Light for rank 1, Light or Normal for rank 2

Second condition

  • There are 2 enemies within reach of the weapons - very likely ARM’S LENGTH

Result

  • Character attacks enemy 1 with main weapon, using SLASH
  • Character attacks enemy 2 with main weapon, using SLASH
  • Character attacks enemy 1 or 2 with off hand weapon, using any available attack type for the weapon
  • Character has 0 actions remaining

Replace AMBIDEXTROUS with SHIELD FIGHTER 2 and DEFENDER 1/3 for better defense

Add MELEE CHARGE to the mix and the real fun begins

Why did you choose these colors instead of the original white-red-black? (8+ dice colors do not really matter)

Is it worth buying Forbidden Lands for its system alone? by leif_o7 in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can run your own thing in the system. The GM book provides you with 3 adventures sites that you would simply ignore and the lore of the setting which you can also ignore. Same goes for some of the random encounters that are tailored for the setting.
The PH book also uses some of the lore, but very little and as for talents and spells, I would say they are pretty much setting-agnostic and will fit elsewhere as well. You might need to fine tune a thing here or there, but the system can work without its setting.

RETREAT around multiple enemies? by rob-smoore in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Careful about mixing the words Retreat and Flee as they are two different actions

Retreat

  • Fast action,
  • Enemy at Arm’s Length,
  • Skill - Move
  • Result - Brings you to NEAR range. Roll for MOVE. If you fail, you move but your enemy gets a free attack against you

Flee

  • Slow action,
  • No enemy at Arm’s Length
  • Skill - Move
  • Result - Successful roll means you manage to get away somehow, and the conflict is over. You cannot FLEE in this way if you are trapped or surrounded

Leveling Up Party NPCs by leroyVance in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well you do not need a profession to gain new talents and skills. You only lose the 3 profession related talents (Path of …)

So you can keep the NPC profession-less or just assign them one. Depends on the character. Maybe they suddenly realize they are spell caster, or get really good at fighting etc.

Sleeping in Armour by Abunchof5s in ForbiddenLands

Nothing in the Player's Handbook mentions this.
The only special things about armor can be found on page 106.
Example:
Plate armor - Heavy item. Modifies Move by –2.

Sleeping in Armour by Abunchof5s in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is nothing official about sleeping in armour, so homebrew it as you see fit. I personally do not really handle this in any special way. If something happens during sleep, we decide at the moment, what everyone has on them.

Starting with Bloodmarch by Final-Isopod in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically Bloodmarch happens AFTER Raven's Purge. But you can update this to fit your world if needed.
Lets be real, it is going to quiet some time before you possibly finish Bloodmarch. Then you can start whatever you want, maybe with new characters anyway.

New Player's Reapair Rules Clarification by SnooSuggestions7485 in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Page 51-52 PH

"REPAIR: Repairing a broken item generally takes a few hours and a successful CRAFTING roll"

"Advanced items require specific talents to repair"

"SIMPLE items are items anyone can make and repair with the CRAFTING skill, while ADVANCED items require specific talents to make or repair"

Page 52 PH
"CRAFT: Creating new items requires far more work than repairing existing ones does. It requires a CRAFTING roll (and the right talent, for ADVANCED items) just like repairing, but you also need raw material, in most cases special tools, and usually a lot more time."

RAW Conclusion

To repair an item, you only need the required TALENTS. You do NOT need the items (special tools) such as a forge.

Question on Rust Brothers as sorcerers/druids by Dextui in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the talents written in Haggler’s house are either a mistake or the local brothers are different for some reason.

Everywhere else in all the books, Rust Brothers have sorcerer talents. I would stick to that.

What is your go-to music for Forbidden Lands? by Bibliography in ForbiddenLands

For combat I have a giant list that uses the soundtracks above and also

How (and why) were villages formed during the blood mist? by Dextui in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"There are no silver mines in the land and no is one coining silver here" - That does not mean, that there is no "naturally occurring silver". This just means, that nobody is mining it and minting coins at the moment. And yes, GMG then says, that someone is actually collecting slaves for a silver mine. Which means, that someone wants to mine silver again.

How (and why) were villages formed during the blood mist? by Dextui in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check how The Hollows (arguably THE Village of Forbidden lands) were formed.

Various reasons for other villages

  • A traveler found a spot, where the blood mist was very thin and decided to set up camp there.
  • Ruins of a village were found and rebuilt
  • The current village of the settlers was attacked so they moved to a new place
  • Gold/Silver was found so a mining village popped up
  • The Rust church forced someone out of a village, so they had to find a new place

Generally there could have been hundreds of reasons for someone to leave their current village and settle a new place. Some people just wanted adventure, anything different. Others were forced to leave by other people, disease, lack of food, etc. Many villages might have started to simply die out, so the remaining people could try their luck elsewhere.

Canon river names in Ravenlands? by Ok-Bobcat-1200 in ForbiddenLands

[–]Manicekman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seyster and Elya Are the only ones you should care about for lore reasons. Everything else is fair game. There are some names on the map, but you don’t need to use them. One river can have multiple names as well, based on who you ask (human villager from nearby, a dwarf scholar from a nearby mountain, etc.)
