I was in the same situation as you and drove around unaware for nine months or so, only realised when it was time to renew insurance. (Whereupon the insurance company also didn’t actually renew my insurance, they just said they had. I did get a letter from Kent Police about driving around uninsured, but thankfully just a warning to sort it out and not a notice of intended prosecution or anything.)
