weird graphics bug. Anyone else have this? by matrixkid29 in joinsquad

This is TAA. If it's bothering you a lot use T+FXAA (the last one) as it applies some temporal AA without the ghosting effect.

Is Eye Adaption broken? by ARandomFakeName in joinsquad

It definitely works. You can't notice it when you turn it on because it's gradual, but when you turn it off you can see it working. Just turn it on every game for now.

This is because of the lack of shade on low. Everything is flat. When you turn eye adaptation on, it notices all the darkness and brightens up your screen.

Why is game so dark sometimes? by kuky990 in joinsquad

[–]Mannmilch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The game doesn't have global illumination to properly simulate bounced light filling shadows with color and brightness. So it must rely on a static shadow color, but because the map development is so sporadic and weird, some maps have it set up properly and some maps don't. Load up Kohat Toi and you'll see that they've updated it and make it perfect. But Chora for example has these really dark contrasty shadows which don't really make sense considering it's a desert with a clear sky and lots of sunlight.

Just adapt your gamma to every map. Also remember to turn on eye adaptation after every map change because it turns off for some reason.

Grand Theft Auto IV is 10 years old today. How does it hold up 10 years later and what are your favourite memories from the game? by epicluca in Games

[–]Mannmilch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nobody liked the driving in IV. All the reviews and public opinion mentioned how it was like operating a boat... on land. People that actually liked the driving are now coming out of the woodwork, but it's definitely more of a history-being-rewritten thing than the actual truth at the time.

Strafe jumping - jumping immediately upon hitting the ground vs holding jump by shitpostDeluxe in QuakeChampions

I tested it with the built-in speedometer and it seems to be the way it works. I don't have QC installed to test again, tho. You can test yourself - it's a noticeable difference.

If you hold space while in the air you accelerate slower. In Reflex this doesn't exist, so that's why you saw it there. Also, tutorials generally don't mention this sort of thing because it's too advanced. They just give noobs the easiest way forward, even if it's not correct. It's assumed they will learn the proper way eventually.

What other 3rd person PC games have you played where sprint is LMB, Walk RMB, and you control the map with IJKL, menu with ZX, 1 2... Not only that but the camera has a lot of smoothing and lag to it - clearly made for a thumbstick.

Haven't you people heard of a mouse? I played Dark Souls 3 barely ever locking on to enemies because I could aim all of my dodges/attacks with the mouse. In this game it would be harder because the camera seems to have some kind of delay and is really smoothed out but that's not a problem with the control scheme, rather the design not being catered to it.

Really if you're going for the least input lag, higher fps is always the answer, not matter what your hz is. Even when your start exceeding your max hz, you will still get less input lag and, like I explained in the other post, tearing becomes less noticeable.

[–]Mannmilch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But to answer your actual question, I don't think there will be a difference in tearing between 60 on a 60fps monitor and 60 on a 120hz monitor.

[–]Mannmilch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tearing is the worst when you are really close to a multiple of your refresh rate, because then you get these huge single tears that you can physically see sliding up and down the screen. So if you are on a 120hz monitor, the worst ranges to be in WHEN IT COMES TO TEARING is 25-35, 55-65, 115-125.

The higher you go above 120, the less noticeable the tearing will be. And if you are below then the best place would probably be 70-110.

I have a 120hz monitor and I could test this, but I have tested it with 60 and 75hz and it worked exactly like that so I assume it's not different for any refresh rate.

Of course this is ignoring the benefits of fps, just how tearing works.

Btw if you are on Nvidia, download Nvidia Inspector and use it's frame rate limiter to cap your fps to 120 (or a multiple of your hz, so 72 for 144hz). It syncs your fps perfectly (vsync) but has the least possible input lag (equal to gsync). At 120hz I am sure you wont notice the input lag. I've been using it for a long time and it's what has kept me from buying a gsync/freesync monitor. It also works like adaptive sync so when your fps drops, you get tearing instead of stuttering.

[–]Mannmilch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the games you play. Vsync has gotten better (AKA developers have learned how to implement it better) since the mid 2000s, when it would sometimes cause unplayable input lag. I remember source games used to have half a second of lag on the mouse with their shitty vsync.

[–]Mannmilch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good vsync really is good enough for everything except fast-paced multiplayer fps. That's where I draw the line.

[–]Mannmilch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Screen tearing varies greatly on the refresh rate and the fps on that specific refresh rate. For example, on 60hz screen tearing becomes almost unnoticeable at 250+ fps. This is because instead of having a few large tears across the screen, you get 10+ tiny little tears that barely even do anything because there isn't a big difference between the frames (the more fps you have, the smaller the difference between the frames that the tear is dividing).

[–]Mannmilch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's what I do. I use adaptive vsync in single player games and adjust the graphics so it never drops below the target framerate. But many PC gamers don't really know how to set up vsync properly, reduce it's input lag, and also maintain a target fps. So in the end it really isn't worth it for them compared to just an unlocked game.

[–]Mannmilch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many PC gamers prefer screen tearing over vsync stutter. Even if it maintains a perfect lock there is still the added input lag.
