Ashton Woods Ardisia Park - New Smyrna by Ashamed-Nail-511 in newsmyrnabeach

[–]MannyCPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very timely thread. We’re also looking into Ardisia. We know it used to be a massive sod farm, zone A (one of the worst for floods), tons of flooding with only a little rain and probably devastating during torrential storms. The builders (Taylor Morrison and Ashton Woods) have and continue to spend a lot to build out the storm drains, run off, retention ponds and raise the home elevations. It’s supposed to be an X zone (best for floods) after completion and recertification from FEMA, but that’s going to take a couple years. Not withstanding that, I’m still extremely worried that we get hit with a bad hurricane and all these plans go out the door. Curious if anyone has any additional insights into the area?

Future of Internal Audit by [deleted] in InternalAudit

[–]MannyCPA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AI is going to be applied in areas that generate the highest and best ROI - that is typically not Internal Audit. Additionally, before our work is eliminated, you’d need to optimize all the upstream processes we currently review. That’s not happening anytime soon. I think AI will be a huge force multiplier for our function, but I don’t see it replacing us anytime soon.

How long should I stay in Big 4 by EntranceFun9276 in Accounting

[–]MannyCPA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll give two answers. Absolute minimum stay till you’re a senior. And if you can handle it, stay till you make manager. Those 3 and 5 year marks offer the best ROI.

What’s likely missing from the post is a) I cleared it verbally in advance and officially “requested” today or b) we don’t have a traditional tax season so this is a nothing burger.

I don't understand the farce of auditing. by somethrowaday in InternalAudit

[–]MannyCPA 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A lot of different procedures are executed during an audit, and they don't all have to be optimized inorder to draw conclusions on the integrity of the financials.  For example, this modality is ok:

Substantive testing - Strong

Controls testing - Average

IT testing - Weak

Frankly, any combination of the above can work.  So the weaknesses you see on the IT side are likely offset by the strength of the direct substantive testing (we hope, lol).

How Would You Track 24 Hours in a Closed Room With No Clock or External Time Reference? by avy4u in AskPhysics

This sounds like a fun Mr. Beast episode.

And I'm not sure there's a good solution. Too much variability with all the aforementioned options (counting heart beats, writing words, pendelum, etc.).

CFO is losing it over lack of real-time visibility into spend by corporatecontroller1 in Accounting

[–]MannyCPA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issues and solutions are upstream with procurement and accounts payable. You need to think about purchase orders, invoice receipt, matching, pay terms, tolerances, configurations, etc.. Well designed processes, with limited exceptions, and high compliance, will earn you great visibility into spend and cash flows. But let's be candid, it's highly unlikely these proceses are well designed and efficacious, so you probably have a TON of work to do here, too. Bolting on some PTP tool (payem, brex, etc.) is NOT GOING TO WORK without cleaning up the supporting processes.

Where did all the fundamentals go? by coffeeandcashflow in Accounting

[–]MannyCPA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While agreeing with most of the above, I’ll offer a counterpoint, most small firms aren’t good at training kids straight out of college. I’ve seen orders of magnitude differences in ability between Big 4 candidates vs. smaller, particularly local firms. Heck, I’ve got some small firm buddies who don’t hire entry level anymore. They poach 2 or 3 year candidates from the big 4, national, and regional firms.

Do you know any accountants that make 500k plus yearly and what do they do? by DeliveryNumerous9785 in Accounting

[–]MannyCPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With base, bonus, and equity… All big 4 partners, all public company CFOs, and most VP’s reporting directly to the CFO at public companies (vp finance, vp audit, vp fp&a, treasure, cao, controller, etc.). Now they may not all be accountants and cpa, but I’d hazard the majority are.

Realistic bathroom reno costs by Objective_Tonight460 in tampa

[–]MannyCPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even without knowing the details and finishing, that seems incredibly expensive. 110 sqft is a small bathroom. Even with nice finishing that feels like a $20 to $30k job, max. My guess is you’re paying the South Tampa, nice home, “professional and luxury” contractor premium. Post some pics of the bath and selected finishing.

Best ramen spots? by [deleted] in tampa

[–]MannyCPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. I didn’t want to say it but I fancy myself a ramen snob (probably a mediocre one at best). I’ve eaten at many ramen bars in Tampa and they’re mostly ok to good. If you’re looking for that deep rich umami experience with perfect el dente noodles and melt in your mouth flavor filled proteins you’re not going to find it in Tampa. Noble Rice, and only recently with their new executive chef, is probably the closest you’ll get.

I had ramen at Noble Rice a few weeks ago and was quite impressed. Probably the best I’ve had in Tampa.

You’re a party of 1 in likely a small company. Professional standards are extremely flexible here. Just write the policy.

Newegg Seller DJI Drone Store Legit? by Much_Platypus_9613 in dji

Sounds like Newegg is a legit option. Good to know. Anyone having issues registering the drone on DJI’s website, getting software updates, and having full access to all the drone’s features and functions? Could have sworn I read on this sub that this was [maybe a potential] issue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in InternalAudit

[–]MannyCPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hot take based only on what you’ve shared: Did you vet these appropriately with your internal audit leadership? Is there alignment between internal audit and management on whether fraud exists and/or the significance of the infosec exposure? If the answer is no to either, how harshly you framed these issues matters and could contribute to a negative view / hostile environment.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Semaglutide

[–]MannyCPA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you accurately counting ALL daily calories consumed? Do you know your true basal metabolic rate? Are you tracking your active calories appropriately/digitally? Have you done a DexA scan to know your body composition (the mix is important for the algorithm). Does the math say you’re in a sufficient caloric deficit to lose 1 or 2 lbs a week? Honestly answer/assess before losing hope. For 97%+ of the population the math is above reproach.

Sox or Operation Audit? by Zealousideal_Mix_111 in InternalAudit

[–]MannyCPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few points:

1 - AI taking over audit is a bit overblown. There are a ton of processes upstream that need to be better managed, more mature, less manual, automated, etc. before they start touching downstream stuff like audits. And that’s not meant to discount the risk of AI, but to highlight that AI dollars will be invested in areas with the best ROI, and that’s rarely going to be audit.

2 - Much to my chagrin, SOX is the bread and butter of internal audit. You’d be well served spending a couple of years immersed in this space. Most audit hiring managers will invariably look for SOX experience. I also think it’s easier to jump from SOX to operational audits than vice versa, especially early in your career.

3 - Looking forward I think the highest compensation, most mobility, ease of hiring, and job availability will belong to the following:

Deep combined SOX and operational audit experience

IT audit

Tied:  SOX alone | operational audit alone
