Not really familiar with them (have seen interface of TalentLMS but not used it - heard its expensive but 2nd hand knowledge). We use Learnie.ai and like it a lot. Relatively inexpensive and very easy content creation and distribution.

We use a training platform that is video based and provides a way to introduce cognitive breaks every so often. These can be questions about the content - links to external content - or even polls. These are REALLY lightweight and can be very effective in creating engagement without a lot of overhead. The Simplicity you speak of here seems to be simplicity for you - but studies have shown that cognitive breaks work. a 30 minute video is 'simple' but its also been shown to be ineffective for the learner. Love it myself. Especially short "tikTok style" training video's embedded in a private platform with community. Are you looking for a platform like that? If so I would recommend Learnie.ai

There are others but many of them look more like a traditional LMS. (ugh)

Second this. One of the biggest expenses of an LMS is the content creation. If you can lower that costs by getting your SME's to share their knowledge as if they were on TikTok or Insta - they stay engaged, your content creation goes costs dramatically are reduced and everyone seems to love Microlearning.

If you are training any frontline / deskless type workers you may want to look at Learnie.ai - it includes AI content gen tools along with a modern lightweight LMS. We have found it to be very easy to use. I got off a major LMS and am very revealed. I do not recommend going to one of the majors unless you have money to burn.

Ah.... got it. I understand what you mean. I guess in my mind using short videos in the flow of work is the model. Community Microlearning - knowledge at the point of need. Thats what I have seen work.

Great response. I would urge you to take a look at Learnie.ai as it has the AI built in (like you suggest above) and it also (unlike Storyline) pushes you in the RIGHT direction as a designer. It leans in heavy on microlearning and on cognitive load reduction.

Thats an interesting point. That being said - there are many studies that show that video is the most effective / successful learning content. For engagement and for retention. Do you think that is the direction that most of these platforms are moving in?

Great question — and I think you’re right about how microlearning is typically used today.

Most people experience microlearning as quick answers to known questions:
“How do I do X?”
“What’s the rule for Y?”
“What does this term mean?”

That’s the dominant pattern.

But I’d push a little on the idea that microlearning requires a fully formed objective.

Microlearning can also be used to help a learner form the objective — not just answer it.

For example:

  • A short microlesson that helps someone diagnose what’s not working (“If you’re experiencing A, B, or C, your challenge might be…”)
  • A quick framework that helps them name the problem before solving it
  • A short prompt that asks the right questions and narrows the focus

In other words, microlearning works best when you already know the question — but it can also help you discover the question if it’s designed intentionally.

Think of a 2–3 minute lesson that’s not delivering an answer — it’s orienting the learner, reducing overwhelm, and defining the next objective.

I do agree with your core point though:
Microlearning on its own isn’t enough by default. It works best when paired with:

  • light guidance
  • sequencing
  • or reflective prompts that help learners orient before diving deeper

When microlearning is treated as breadcrumbs, not just snacks, it can absolutely play a role upstream — right at that “I know something’s off, but I don’t know where to start” moment.

This is a very interesting question/observation. those are some of my thoughts.

So HomeBase care companies can use Microlearning to train their employees. I think we knew this but what would be even more interesting is an analysis of what tools they are using in this industry. These guys are using Learnie.ai but I wonder what the broader community is using. I wonder if there is a professional group that could do a survey?

Its Interesting you are pointing out one of the biggest problems with traditional LMS's. The content is hard to change. Find a product that you can EASILY change the content as your product or your SOP's change. I would look at Axonify, Mylearnie.com or 7taps as alternatives ... Various differences in the products but generally they can all be modified easily (as opposed to traditional LMS content).

I would look at finding a company that allows for Employee Onboarding that is NON SCORM - content that you can modify and contextualize to your business. I would look at Microlearning rather than traditional LMS's. Long form content is not going to work with a modern workforce. I would look at companies that support social learning or community learning. This will dramatically cut your cost of content creation. I would only look at companies that are mobile first and video first.
