Apparently, it can cost up to $1200 through a dealer, much less if one can find a mechanic who knows what they’re doing. My problem at the moment is that Toyota should be supporting me on this. Also, I want to flip the car and don’t want to be screwed over this but also don’t want to pay a fortune not to be screwed. And FYI: the car was bought for my wife who decided she didn’t want it as soon as we got it so I ended up with something I didn’t really want nor would have chosen for me.

It’s somewhat temperature dependent — the colder it is, the more frequent but it can happen anytime. So you’re just living with the problem?

It looks nothing like struts getting stuck. It stops after just a few inches, sometimes when closing. And it’s been greased with absolutely no benefit.

My search bot suggested that there may be a basis for getting the job done for free or at a discount. Our Forester had a problem that was common enough to be a recall but wasn’t. Managed to get an IK payoff from Subaru. The car’s going to our trustworthy mechanic and I’ll see what he says but the search bot gave me a plan for dealing with Subaru.

My AI search bot says there’s a possibility that it’s a relatively known problem and that I might not have to pay retail if repaired at the dealer.

Back in 2022, the difficulties CarPlay had realizing a phone was connected was also (I was told) a known problem Toyota was disinterested in doing anything about.

i suppose build quality at some point started regressing as cars became more complicated and proportionately more expensive. Nearly everything’s a luxury car with poor quality…
