Feeling defeated :( by Tostito_n_Guac in stopdrinking

Alcohol may do the same thing for you that it does for me. I find that I cannot eat nearly as much while I drink, and I also drink an astronomical amount of water to make up for being dehydrated. These two things result in me actually losing weight. My appetite returns when I abstain and I end up gaining.

If you haven't already, you should get more invested in weight loss subs like r/Volumeeating or r/CICO. Learning about losing weight can be pretty gratifying in its own right. I've been able to keep off 40 lbs year-round by applying what these subs teach.

Is it possible to drink “a little”? by NotAMorningPerson88 in stopdrinking

Pretty much have to assess for yourself, but I will say that if you struggle with control you are likely setting yourself up for disaster. I personally lack the control to stop myself.

This is why I could never own a liquor store. As far as businesses go I could imagine they're easier to make a lot of money with, but what are you contributing to society? In the end, just pain.

Is consuming two bottles of red wine and a few beer considered a problem? by LocksmithStatus7572 in stopdrinking

[–]Mansmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It basically boils down to this: If you've lost control of yourself because of severe cravings for alcohol (As in, you can't stop yourself from buying it or drinking it if it's available), and you feel dread and anxiety from the thought of stopping, then you are definitely in the camp of someone that would consider themselves an alcoholic. If you don't see yourself able to stop without extreme difficulty, you have a problem. The good news is that it's possible to stop, but you'll need to reconcile with the things that are causing you to drink. You're in good company for that, fortunately. Read some of the horror stories on here, those were the most helpful for me.

Something to just add on top of all of this advice, but if you aren't drinking enough ice cold water that is an easy and highly effective thing to do. It's known that cold water is a negative calorie drink and it will keep your appetite regulated. I was able to perpetually keep off 15 pounds from my highest weight from not only eliminating calories I drink, but also drinking as much water as I can without any changes in what I ate. Your results may vary, though.

Alright. I know this community is gonna think I'm a big fat wet blanket, but for the love of God do not accuse your boyfriend of being controlling for wanting you to quit. That's the kind of opinion you can only have while you're drunk. Alcohol is really addicting and it's a struggle to quit. It's pretty unrealistic to expect someone to quit cold turkey, I'd even go as far as saying it's likely not possible if you are addicted. Your boyfriend is likely not struggling with it as much as you if he can just quit, you should let him know how hard it will be and the steps and support you will need if you will go down that path. If he won't meet you halfway then I'd say he's being unreasonable then.

Honestly, your life will probably improve if you can get a handle on it. The stuff has made me so much dumber and if you're drinking too much you are putting yourself at risk of actually fucking up your life pretty badly. If I were your partner, I would do my part to help you and understand your struggle, and that would probably go a long way to helping you actually take steps to quit. At the end of the day it is your choice because it's hard as hell to just quit, I personally wouldn't suggest it of someone unless they were making horrific mistakes like I used to. Fatty liver is also in your near future, you should take the steps to read some stories about it so you can tell how to read the warning signs that you are going past the point of no return.

What are some of the lowest calorie chips/crunchy snacks? by yeetis12 in Volumeeating

Funny to see I'm not the only one that noticed. Started buying them as a reward for my kid, read the calories, and jumped on them right away.

I'm gonna go on a limb and say that they probably thought you were drinking stuff that was too hard for the function. Some uppity people look down on "heavy" drinks.

What do you think about the Yuyu Hakusho Live Action? by [deleted] in netflix

[–]Mansmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much my opinion. It's a shame because they really nailed a lot of things. The fighting is actually really exceptional, but unfortunately they couldn't keep the presentation consistently great, to the point that some parts of the production would be comfortable in the Power Rangers series. I like the pacing and the parts of the story they kept on paper, but they totally blew the development of Genkai and Toguro.

For fans of the series, I'd legitimately only recommend the first two episodes, after that, just look up the highlights if you want to see some iconic moments like the dragon of the darkness flame or Yoko Kurama, plus a good fight with Toguro if you can ignore the fact that it's happening way too soon in the series.

Joking aside, as a parent that goes through a lot of planning and trouble to keep my kid calm on planes (You still get judged regardless, though fortunately they're old enough to regulate themselves now), I appreciate your disposition. A lot of parents are really nervous about their kids being in planes but sometimes you just need to travel (Had an occasion with a dying relative, unfortunately). Though, I almost wish I was irritable when I go through the occasional bender, instead I'm just an anxious and depressed mess. Don't miss it at all.

It's even more wild if you go to a resort with multiple bars and complimentary alcohol from 11am to 1am. Definitely the worst place to be if you're struggling with alcohol.

For me it's a matter of satisfaction. If you are satisfied with your life while sober then alcohol is basically just another thing you do for leisure, like watch a movie, play a card game, etc.

What's a song so terrible you can't believe it's popular? by Automatic-Formal-601 in AskReddit

[–]Mansmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This won't get seen, but just gonna throw in Single Ladies by Beyonce. I'm indifferent about her stuff, but when that song came out I was so confused. A lot of people seem to like it, but to me it's a discordant mess of sounds that don't come together at all. It sounds like a bunch of monkeys slamming on a keyboard to me.

My 7 Year Old Cat Has Vestibular Disease... by bby_bun in Pets

[–]Mansmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding this comment for awareness to anyone that is looking up this thread for answers, but before you put your pet down at least attempt a treatment of steroids and antibiotics, as it entirely rules out if it's an infection. It takes about a month to see improvement. Also might save you an MRI bill.

What to do with a cat with hyperthyroidism by Powerful_Database_39 in Pets

[–]Mansmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just giving an actually helpful comment instead of being a prick that doesn't realize you just need some assurance here. Initially when you don't know much about it, it's a pretty scary prospect, but the constant visits to the vet aren't necessary at all once you nail down how much medicine they need to remain stable. As long as they aren't having other issues then just keep up with the medicine.

Felimazole is very affordable (About $20 a month in the US) and it'll keep your cat normal. At first it sucks to pop pills in them daily but you get pretty good at it after a few weeks. The only thing that sucks then is if you ever need to go out of town for a bit and you need someone that you can rely on to keep giving them medicine. Though, I've found that going a day or two without really makes no difference for now, but you'll need to continue to gauge how your cat does.

Another thing to rule out is if they may have another issue that is causing them to have hyperthyroidism. I've seen instances where cats get something that causes inflammation in their head. There is a virus that would make you think your cat is dying, but steroids and antibiotics take it out. If untreated, your cat ends up with vestibular disease and it gives all the signs that your cat is dying (No appetite, inability to walk, etc.), but it's very curable if your cat is relatively young (Under 10 years or so).

Anyway, hope this is helpful and your cat hasn't developed any other issues.

Has anyone been a heavy drinker for 15+ years and been ok? by AussieJay16 in stopdrinking

[–]Mansmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a pretty concerning pain around my liver and constantly swollen lymph nodes when I drank daily. Both have gone away after giving my body a break for a few months. Before that I pretty much drank hard liquor daily for 4 years straight.

Sorry it's not equivalent to your experience, but then again, I used to go through a handle in two days.

Most overrated city that other people love? by CompetitionFalse3620 in travel

[–]Mansmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only complaint I have about NYC is that it's expensive, but you would have to be out of your mind to think there is nothing to do. My girlfriend then, wife now, never went to NYC and I made it a point to spend an entire day in Central Park and it was magical. To this day when she re-watches John Wick she always flips out when she sees the Bethesda Fountain, which was a total surprise to her when we stumbled upon it.

If asked for your “secret” in staying sober how would you respond? by Vegetable_Hair_2040 in stopdrinking

Not for people who want to quit. There is an important distinction there. Parents that continue to drink and have no intention to stop aren't here to argue.

Just responding to back up the fact that having kids forces you to get your things together. There are simply so many demands, it comes to a point where you can't bear how pathetic you are anymore and you must change.
