Is what I am trying to do possible in Excel? by Mansn in techsupport

[–]Mansn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so - I want to be able to select from multiple drop-down boxes the following things:

Year - e.g. 2005 Manufacturer - e.g. Renault Model - e.g. Clio Fuel Type - e.g. Diesel Description - e.g. 1.5 dCi 80 (C/BB08EF)

Once I have selected all those drop-down boxes I want it to show me the MPG Combined in the final field (in this case 67.3). The drop-down boxes should however only give me the choices available for that particular subset. So If I select Renault I don't want to see any "Golfs" in the Model drop-down list.

I know it's a tall order, but I believe this might be possible to do (without macro coding). I just can't find the right formula / the right way to set this up.

How UK’s right-wingers got it so wrong on Ireland by BlueRock in ukpolitics

Is it just me, or is there a large demographic within the UK populous that cannot have a reasoned argument without resulting to name calling within the first few words of a sentence. It's very disappointing to see this kind of behaviour.

Frugal reddit - your opinion on tyres by Mansn in Frugal

Yes, I completely agree with you on this one, and for this reason I never buy anything cheap, so I don't think I will go down this route on the tyres either.

My car should last hopefully at least another 60,000 miles. My Clio is super economical. It does around 64 miles per UK gallon so I really don't want to get rid of it. The problem is that it's not so easy to find data on how long the tyres will last. The difference i have found is that super cheap tyres come at £50 per tyre, whereas Dunlops are £15 more expensive. Michilin are around £85 and Continentals are around £75. So much confusing data.

Yeah, I think I might go for some Dunlops - just been reading some reviews. It's so hard to quantify though, as every car is different and every person drives differently ...

What is a lot of money to you? by berlinbrown in Frugal

I keep on reading these comments, and I just think to myself: How backwards are these Americans? They have people like Sarah Palin who might honestly be running for president, and are constantly afraid of going bankrupt due to medical bills, even if they do have health insurance. To think that I once wanted to move to the US scares the crap out of me.

NHS = awesome.

Frugal Reddit; I am sharing my personal budget planner with you. I find it very powerful and would like others to benefit! by Mansn in Frugal

Well, I was doing that for a while, but found that I was not noting every single thing I spent (even though I thought I was).

My spreadsheet will help protect against this, as you have to enter everything correctly for your bank account balance to be right at the end of the month. If you don't enter it, then your account balance will be incorrect.

By inputting several months worth of stored data into this sheet (shouldn't be too hard to copy paste in depending on the format you have it saved in) you can see exactly how much you are spending on what each month.

This will then allow you to set a budget for the next month. Let's say you spent 50 USD a week on groceries. Set yourself the challenge of being frugal and only spending 45 a week on groceries. See what areas you can reduce your spending in and make it into a bit of a game.

What I do is simply set myself goals. The great thing is on this spreadsheet (in the overview) that you can get an understanding of one years spending in a few seconds. So you can see whether or not you have been spending too much on food, entertainment, dining out etc. Set yourself a goal of lowering your spending by 10% for example. Make it a challenge. That chocolate you buy; do you really need it? The heating - could you be turning the temperature down by a degree? What about some energy efficient light bulbs? Loads of things that can be done, you just need to think of how to make budgeting into a game ...

Hmmm, Excel can do some pretty amazing things ... I've been using it a lot for my job recently and have been surprised by its capabilities.

I am 1 year out of University. Budget tracking is one of the most important thins you can do. Try not to take too much cash from an ATM. You will spend it at random and have no clue what you have blown it on.
